Cheap raincoat for walking the dog that doesn’t look shit?

Koulibiak · 05/09/2025 22:00

I need a new raincoat. It must have pockets and a hood, and cover my bum, but doesn’t need to go knee length.

Everything I see gives off a vibe of “I’m hiking the Adirondacks trail then making it to Everest base camp”. I’m not going on an expedition. I just need something simple and not overly trek-ish. Please help. 🙏

Make sure what you buy is ‘waterproof’ and not just ‘showerproof’. There it s a difference.

I’d go to a shop such as Mountain Warehouse, Regatta, Trepass for the cheaper end of the market, or Jack Wolfskin, Craghopper for a higher cost.

Not lined and not warm / cosy, but 100% waterproof - this was recommended last year on Mumsnet

Cheap, hood that tightens up for windy days, I've worn it with a hooded sweatshirt when it's been cold and just a tee-shirt when it's been warm & wet. Big pockets for poo bags and mobile.

Do you like the dry robe type coats? Oodie do a much cheaper version which is actually waterproof. Not just shower proof but full blown downpour proof. Nice big pockets and mid-thigh length. I've worn it this week in the random downpours and it doesn't get too hot, but wearing it in winter kept me plenty warm enough.

No, just no.

I’ve got a Joules Holkham. Light, waterproof, reasonably warm on its own. Not as breathable as my technical outdoor waterproof jacket but it looks quite smart so it’s a great multi purpose coat for travelling. Great for walking the dog in autumn and spring. It comes in quite a few colours.

DON`T get brand new - simply go to a local charity shop
> Somebody WILL have donated the EXACT thing you ARE lookin for - trust me, you WILL find it - it IS new to you

Currymaker · 09/09/2025 09:54

Have you considered charity shops? I have a Rohan coat from one - looks brand new, waterproof and breathable, cost me a tenner. Also a really useful lightweight Joules one. While I'd never buy knitwear second hand, I'm amazed at some of the really great coats and jackets that end up in charity shops.

Orla Kiely Longline Waterproof Jacket - Khaki | Regatta UK https://share.google/9E79YnebWOltfxUBV

Loving the regatta Orla Kiley range, I have a different one to this but am eyeing this one now

I have a Regatta Orla Kiely raincoat too, so second this - it’s fabulous and mine was in the sale too

There's a good sale on at the moment.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 09/09/2025 11:28

I just got a Craghoppers one, £50 down from £125 in the sale. It’s properly waterproof. Mine is the National Trust one, it covers my bum because I’m shorter than the model. I can’t stand long dogwalking jackets because they restrict your knees going up hills.

WellyBellyBoo · 09/09/2025 11:33

I got a lovely Uniqlo one for about £30 on Vinted

evtheria · 09/09/2025 11:58

My word of advice is if buying secondhand, make sure that it’s a rubbery sort of waterproof (like a traditional raincoat, reputable brand so you know the seams are properly done) or that it’s in excellent/like new condition. Some people don’t care for their waterproof stuff, or don’t know about the types of fabric, and end up washing/damaging the coating that stops the rain soaking through technical fabrics. You can buy stuff to help re-proof the clothing but I’m not sure how well it works myself.

I have this for dog walks and walking to work in the rain. Have worn in very heavy rain (in Cornwall, where I bought it!) and the rain was literally running off it. Had a more expensive (North Face) one years ago but this one is just as good - so far! Black I feel looks less hike-y.

suki1964 · 09/09/2025 14:47

I just got this one

I actually bought it for city break to Prague at the end of this month but it's been used a lot these past two weeks due to the heavy showers we are having, walking the dog, going on my own walks and down to the shops etc.

So far its protected me , the hood is a good size and pulls in well around the face without pulling your head down ( its really windy out here ) and so far Ive been warm enough with just a tee shirt on under

Would recommend Seasalt try vinted or an outlet shop.

DinoLil · 09/09/2025 15:12

I bought a man's raincoat from Next last year. It was about £20 ish, massive but fits into a little pouch. A hood that comes down to the end of my nose, mid thigh length. Totally waterproof and a bit too warm tbh (it is all plastic and I'm 54 and peri!). Loads of pockets for my phone, poo bags, treats, long line, keys. It's a lovely colour blue, very vibrant. I love it! Doggo also gets very excited when I put it on!

wwyd2021medicine · 09/09/2025 15:18

Primark also have short waterproof coats in their gym clothing section

Brava · 09/09/2025 15:53

This is good - 100% waterproof & nice on. V good value at £36 - tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc146030608?clickSR=slp:term:rubberised%20raincoat:1:14:1

lessglittermoremud · 09/09/2025 16:09

I got my dog walking coat from cotton traders, covers my bottom, fleece lined with a hood and in a lovely teal colour.
They do lots of different ones on there, It’s not somewhere I’d usually look but I complimented a fellow dog walker on their coat in a plum colour and they recommended them

Koulibiak · 09/09/2025 18:29

Thank you everyone for taking the time to advise me. This has been so helpful, I really appreciate all your posts. I’ve discovered lots of brands I wasn’t aware of, I also like the looks of some supermarket brands, and I am determined to use Vinted for the first time. I am still researching my options but at least now I know where to look.🙏

Seasalt outlet on eBay is always worth checking for raincoats.

Is the hood a generous size? I find that hoods don’t cover enough if my head to keep me dry on women’s coats.
they seem to stop just slightly before my hair line and I get a wet face.
