I rushed into buying something, feel neither confident nor comfortable in it.

Wonder if John Lewis will accept it back after the 35 days.

Feel like a little fat, frumpy old person in this.

There returns policy is within 30 days. You could go along today and be really nice in a hope a manager will override for the extra 5 days. (Prepare a nice sob story about not being able to get to the shop before and be very lovely and nice etc).

cumbriaisbest · 25/08/2025 08:04

I'm 12 days over. I hate it. I don't want anything that draws attention to me. In any way.

I tried that on and although the print and colour is beautiful in the photo I totally get your reaction. I think it’s something to do with the material? If it helps I ended up getting this. The colour is so beautiful could you try a swap with JL? (Even if it’s not for that dress?)

Is it thus, op, your link doesn’t work for me? If so, I think it looks lovely. If you don’t want attention drawn to you, could you wrap a big pashmina around you, in a neutral colour that goes with the dress? I’m not entirely sure what colour, depends on your own colouring, and also whatever colour shoes you plan. Down play it all?

Says you've lost the receipt and they may issue you with a credit note.
Although it may not be at full price.

LadyLapsang · 25/08/2025 10:22

I recently returned something one day late and they were fine. I told them straight away it was late as I went to complete the online return and it had disappeared overnight. I do spend a lot in the shop and keep most items. If you return a lot of items or things look like you may have worn them I would expect them to refuse. If it is pristine and you buy something more expensive I think they would do a part exchange as the dress appears to be selling for the full price.

Movinghouseatlast · 25/08/2025 10:29

They will do an exchange in the shop I think?

It's the collar I think, I can imagine it would be frumpy on me too. My husband bought me a dress with a collar like that and I opened it up and ironed it like more of a v neck, then pinned the collar down. It made the dress look totally different.

I wouldn't recommend this because if it doesn't work (so much shoplifting) you can't suddenly produce the receipt!

BeaLola · 25/08/2025 12:37

You ave nothing to lose by going back , being honest and seeing if you can exchange for something else

BeaLola · 25/08/2025 12:38

I too think it's the collar

Not quite the sane league but I bought a dress for work from H&M and loved it apart from the collar- I took it off and it looked so much better (obviously not suggesting you do that with this dress)

cumbriaisbest · 25/08/2025 12:54

I have a receipt on the App,can't find the paper one. It has the tags on and a bag.
It's the swirly pattern, I'm all chest. The crochet is shite.
It's not classy or understated. Big error.

When I worked in retail you would get more from me if it was presented really nicely folded and looked after and a really friendly nice attitude of I know it's late but would there be anything at all you could do? I would be so greatful.
Opposed to slamming it down and hoping I wouldn't notice the date.

Delphiniumandlupins · 25/08/2025 16:14

That's a shame because in the photos it looks quite pretty. Not attention-seeking, maybe a little dull. Take it back with a smile, be prepared for a credit note rather than a refund. Hope you can find something you like.

sandwichlover93 · 25/08/2025 16:52

They’ll give you a credit note at worst.

FattyMcFattyArse · 25/08/2025 16:56

That dress is truly awful. I hope you get an exchange for something pretty and that you feel fabulous in.

cumbriaisbest · 25/08/2025 18:06

Thanks so much for your replies. I was a bit low this morning. Changed it, no issues.

I am a very honest person who is never rude to people in shops ( or anywhere!)

I agree it's awful, very Stepford Wives. I've made similar mistakes when pushed to buy an outfit for an occasion.

Tillygan60 · 25/08/2025 19:50

Ooh, well done! What did you get instead?

They might consider an exchange for another phase eight dress….I actually really like it though, the colours are great

Great, please share what you bought instead

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 26/08/2025 09:53

I hate buying occasion dresses, part of my problem is that I would never choose smart dresses, to me they all look awful on me, so I can't tell which ones are objectively awful, iyswim.
I've started buying things that I like, that others might think aren't weddingy enough. The sky hasn't fallen in yet, and I've actually enjoyed the day instead of feeling that I'm dressed as somebody else. I'd recommend it.

Echobelly · 26/08/2025 10:28

Glad it's sorted. I'm normally pretty relaxed about outfits but I went to future BIL's wedding when DH and I had been together for 18 months and future MIL did not approve of me at the time. She thought I was terribly shy and unconfident (I'm not) so I agonised over the outfit. I bought a top and skirt but I just wasn't happy and in the end went and bought a more prom-dressy thing in Debenhams a week before. Funny thing is, I can remember the outfit I wasn't happy with but I can't remember what the dress looked like other that flowery and a bit prommy.

TheCurious0range · 26/08/2025 10:56

I like that dress I tried it on for a wedding, DM tried the same dress on and it looked completely different. I am 5'9/10 and very straight up and down , she is 5'2 hourglass, with quite big boobs and it made her look frumpy. I think it's just different styles for different shapes.

Which one did you get in the end?

Xiaoxiong · 26/08/2025 13:05

Ooh, what'd you get instead?
