I rushed into buying something, feel neither confident nor comfortable in it.

Wonder if John Lewis will accept it back after the 35 days.

Feel like a little fat, frumpy old person in this.

I hate buying occasion dresses, part of my problem is that I would never choose smart dresses, to me they all look awful on me, so I can't tell which ones are objectively awful, iyswim.
I've started buying things that I like, that others might think aren't weddingy enough. The sky hasn't fallen in yet, and I've actually enjoyed the day instead of feeling that I'm dressed as somebody else. I'd recommend it.

That’s exactly how I feel! Had a wedding and a graduation this year and agonised for months over what to wear! I’m taking a leaf out of your book in future 👏

Yes! And I buy them when I see them. Not many, obviously! But then I know I have one or two already, and I don't feel under pressure if an event comes up.

Ooh, well done! What did you get instead?

Sounds frumpy but with a little vest underneath. DOn't want to expose elderly chest.

Thinking of going for a cherry red wrap type of thing and a vintage bag.

What is it's a bit chilly?

A bigger warmer wrap? Love the idea of cherry red with it. (And you'll have your little vest on, you can add warmth by getting that with a touch of cashmere in the knit - m&s used to do them)

Cornishclio · 26/08/2025 23:30

I feel your pain having trawled round numerous shops today looking for a dress for my brothers wedding next weekend. I really miss Debenhams when looking for occasion dresses. I bought one from M and S in the end with shoes and a bag to match and the cashier asked if I was going to a wedding so I took that as a win.

Glad they agreed to change it and you have something else you are happy with.

Xiaoxiong · 27/08/2025 10:01

@Cornishclio I agree - we still have a family-run department store in our town with lots of concessions from various occasion-wear brands, and it's really helpful for a situation like this where you just need to try on lots of dresses at once and don't want to do a safari around the shops. Glad you found something nice that reads "wedding" - agree that it's a win that the shop assistant knew what you were going for without you saying!!

ForFunGoose · 27/08/2025 10:05

Beautiful OP
Love the cherry wrap idea too.

Says you've lost the receipt and they may issue you with a credit note.
Although it may not be at full price.

John Lewis won't let you return/exchange things without the receipt IME.

I do this too. I’m really not a wedding outfit person. I have enormous bosoms on an average sized body so trying to get something I like, that fits well, and comes in my size, all at the same time is too much to hope for. It’s better for me to wear a great skirt/wide leg trouser or jacket and a darker plain top.

I had it on an App. Think they were so busy, the poor woman just agreed.

No wraps to be found anywhere. Perhaps a bit frumpy anyway.

i recently got married and i wore an ivory jumpsuit from Phase 8, it had one strap with a bow, to give me more confidence my seamstress, from the excess material made me another strap. it matched my two daughters who also had phase 8 jumpsuits in Fuschia. Being 60 i felt beautiful and it gave me lots of confidence

Thanks so much for your replies. I was a bit low this morning. Changed it, no issues.

I am a very honest person who is never rude to people in shops ( or anywhere!)

And why are you being so hard on yourself OP?
We have all bought clothes that don't do us justice and we can all find our own "beautiful"

Brilliant although I can't see the point of getting married at 60

Well, there are a host of financial reasons at the very least, quite apart from the personal ones, you immature troll.

Don't do it then, problem solved.

cumbriaisbest · 01/09/2025 15:17

Re married when 60, when you're young you have that arrogance but the years tick by quicker than you think.

Dress worked well, infinitely better than original choice.
