OH anyone notice Melanias shoes with the scouts. They were beautiful.

Yes they were, I see she is now back in her heels though!

Trump is back in his republican red tie (token fashion comment) and rambling away in a jaw dropping fashion in this press conference!

Occasional poster who loves the chat in these threads and the escapism of admiring the Royal wardrobe. I'm hoping someone here will know the answer to a question that keeps bugging me about the blue order sashes. Why do the women have theirs up on their shoulder which looks right but the men have theirs tucked under their armpit looking as though they are about to fall down?

Maireas · 18/09/2025 16:38

Hi, @ExquisitelyDecorating , glad you could join us! Sorry I don't know the answer to that, but I'm hoping one of our more knowledgeable posters will help!

I don’t know why the men wear their Knight of the Garter sash from armpit to hip and the ladies wear their ladies of the Garter sash from shoulder to hip but it’s listed on page 5 here as the correct way to wear it.
https://centralchancery.org.uk/media/3qafvnti/how-to-wear-guide.pdf

I think the Knight of the Garter sash is the only one worn under the arm and going from right shoulder to left hip. It’s the oldest Order of Chivalry in the world established in 1348 and apart from Royals and a few honorary non British members there can only be 24 members at any time. According to Sotheby’s “by the late seventeenth century it had become practice to sling the Lesser George under the right arm, a contemporary chronicler explaining that this was for ‘conveniency of riding and action’. “

Thanks, @Choux ! I knew someone would have the answer.

Aha, that makes sense, I knew this thread would be the right place to ask, thank you I have visions of them going back to their rooms, kicking their shoes off, the ladies lifting off their sashes easily and throwing them on the bed and the men getting all tangled up in them because they are round their torso, or having a safety pin jabbing them in the armpit. I suspect it is all a lot more dignified!

Fun fact: men have two versions of the sash - one for wearing with uniforms or other suits, and one for wearing with white tie and tails. The “uniform” version is worn exactly the same as the women do - over their shoulder like a Beauty Queen sash. The white tie version is much shorter and is attached to the shirt side seam with buttons. Otherwise it would get tangled up with the jacket’s tails, apparently!

Sophie and Kate must be due for garters?

Maireas · 18/09/2025 18:42

Evening, @Serenster , and thank you! That makes sense.

OP posts:
Choux · 18/09/2025 18:56

Camilla only got it in 2022 despite marrying Charles in 2005.
The Duchess of Gloucester got it in 2024 at the age of 78.

I imagine Sophie and Kate will both get it at some point. It will be interesting to see who gets it first. I think Sophie first as she has been in the family the longest.

Usually Queen consorts were named as Ladies of the Garter by their husbands when they were king but QEII named Camilla as a LotG a few months before she died. Possibly part of her campaign to ensure she was known as Queen Camillla. So perhaps Kate will have to wait till William is King or perhaps Charles will grant it to her as Liz did for Camilla.

Thanks @Serenster for the extra sash knowledge. I didn’t make the link that the sashes were also on uniforms.

Maireas · 18/09/2025 19:06

Also, is there a limit to how many can be members of the Order at any one time? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

OP posts:
ExquisitelyDecorating · 18/09/2025 19:12

Thank you @Serenster

I thought I might have read that too @Maireas but I might be confusing it with the ones that can stand in for the king in an emergency.

I think that's the Privy Council?

Maxima went to a brain tissue research facility today. Her hat and top half are bold but regal and very Max but the skirt… I have no words. It’s like a costume or the curtain fringing.

There can only be only be 24 non Royal Knights and Ladies Companion but there is no limit to the number of royal members. There are 4 spare slots in the 24 anyway.

Max - I love the colour, such a vibrant chartreuse, I love that shade. Also, a Pringle hat! Yay! I'm not sure about the fringing either. It's interesting, though, very Max!

Are those earrings tiny Christmas wreaths or highly trained caterpillars that have been taught to cling to her ears? 🤷‍♀️

The whole thing is

very

Max, only she could pull it off.

I'm going with highly trained caterpillars. Got to love Max 😻

I wonder if Max’s surprised look on the first photo is because she got her skirt caught and shredded it in the car 😆
