Back to school mentality- new clothes, new stationery and new bag etc?

Who still has the back to school mentality when it comes to September in terms of buying new stationery, clothes ( even just a new pair of socks) and new accessories etc?

I buy new shoes for DD at the end of August. Except for Year R (when she grew out of them in Feb), they’ve always lasted a whole year. I tend to buy new trousers for the new school year as DD has grown out of the old ones that haven’t been worn since Easter… last year I didn’t and in November I struggled to find ordinary grey school trousers, so I’ve bought more in the next size up for when DD needs them.

HollyGolightly4 · 13/08/2025 18:39

Me- although I am a teacher 🤣

September more than January is my new year. I love to treat myself - new boots for one!

pushthebuttonnn · 16/08/2025 21:36

Dd only got a new bag after Christmas from the Smiggle sale so she's not getting another 🤣 it's a waste buying one every year imo. Unless they are in a bad way I don't see the point. I always buy dark coloured ones as they don't look tatty after 5 mins!

SpamBeansAndWaffles · 16/08/2025 21:38

I think OP meant as adults 😂

pushthebuttonnn · 16/08/2025 21:38

I totally missed that 🤣

FancyCatSlave · 16/08/2025 21:41

Me. I work in HE so the academic calendar drives my life. Sept is the start of a new year, not Jan and I always like to have some
new work clothes and shoes.

MigGril · 16/08/2025 21:45

Yep, I love the stationery in the supermarket atthis time of year. But then I also work in high school so my life revolves around the school year.

Squeezingintomyjeans · 19/08/2025 07:05

I have very little to do with schools any more as my DD is grown up but I still get that excited feeling every year and look forward to a new bag or a pair of trainers and I’ll probably pick a notebook and some stationery for work as well. I’m secretly pleased that 1st September is a Monday this year, it just feels right!

DongDingBell · 19/08/2025 07:15

Nope. Bought as required over the year.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2025 07:31

I’m a teacher and definitely feel this, but I really don’t need any new clothes except a new black cardigan and a couple of basic black tops.

I’ve made myself a new pencil case and do genuinely need new work shoes, but I’m struggling to find any that I like.

I'm a lecturer and yes, always get the back to school feeling! I've picked up a few bits and pieces for wearing to work, but am more excited about the true autumn items that are sitting in wait in my wardrobe. A glorious orange alpaca knit from Arket and a brown fairisle cardi from Urban Outfitters that I are giving me so much joy. I do enjoy a new midyear diary too.

After 300 years as a teacher, I’ve finally found my perfect diary! I intend to repeat purchase until I retire.

A new diary you say? Would it be in the spirit of S&P to share a link?

I used to really like the Paperchase ones - compact, a page a week, and cute designs. I was so sad when they went bust!

Depressing thread. I never liked that "back to school" feeling, the end of summer, back to the grind, the chill and the dark. Definitely won't be buying anything to mark it.

It’s these ones. They come in a few colours/designs - mine has butterflies.

You date them yourself and each day has a planning page and a notes page.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/08/2025 16:56

For years after finishing university I got this feeling of missing out every September I didn't go back. Even now it's the time I get that fresh start feeling that other people talk about getting in January.

schmalex · 19/08/2025 17:37

Me! In France everyone has it as they are all off on holiday for the whole of August. It's called La Rentree (probably with some accents that I can't find) and I thoroughly approve as I've always loved getting new stationery in September.

Another teacher here and I’ve bought myself a personalised teacher planner that looks like a Penguin paperback with my name on it and a new skirt and jacket too.

Paper base is now part of Tesco and they have a big planner book in. It’s cheaper of you have a Clubcard.

The planner sounds lovely. Link?
