I'm starting at the gym and need to buy legging style shorts which finish above the knee.

Hi I'd like to buy a pair of legging style gym shorts for the gym, I've got knee problems , so need to keep my knees uncovered. Can you recommend any brands which are reasonable and don't go see through when you bend over , I'd preferably avoid black as it's not my colour.

Well you’re describing cycling shorts so I’d start there. llama Leisure are one that do them with pockets

TokyoSushi · 07/08/2025 14:29

Get some Sweaty Betty 9 inch bike shorts off Vinted.

QuaverQuanta · 07/08/2025 14:43

I buy Llama Leisure or Tikiboo

ihavespoken · 07/08/2025 14:46

Another vote for Sweaty Betty and going via vinted is a great idea. They are all I wear at the gym and are brilliant quality. They are $$$ from the Sweaty Betty website although they have regular sales which reduce the prices a lot, although still pretty expensive. I got mine for a xmas present this year!

Edited to add: They have loads of different colours/prints too, and pockets

ChipKing · 07/08/2025 14:49

https://amzn.eu/d/cQUOZTm these do the job.

Dogsrbrill · 07/08/2025 15:18

Thanks for the recommendations , I didn't state cycling shorts as I thought that they would have a padded crotch

Ellesse and they have a 50% off sale on now.

If you’re planning the longer length ones (above the knee, usually 9 inch) because you think they’re more flattering (you may not be, so forgive me if you just want the longer ones regardless) then I’d suggest trying slightly shorter as often they look better on. I don’t like my legs and went for 9inch to ‘cover’ them up but they actually looked really bad, went for the 6inch and they look much better. i have fat knees and the longer ones seemed to make them look worse!

ShebaQueen · 07/08/2025 16:48

I recommend these, had mine for years and they definitely don't have any padding. I also have the capri length

The CRZ yoga brand on Amazon has some in both 6” and 9”. All of their leggings and shorts are a great fit and material- I think they are a dupe for a more expensive brand.

Agree - my (actually decent!) legs look like shit in knee length!! I look so stumpy!

Another vote for Sweaty Betty 9" power shorts
Or the 6" or 3" if you prefer.

They are expensive but well worth the price and offer have sales and offers.

Yes and a trick with sweaty betty is join as an insider. The instructions are on their website. All they do is send you emails and offers

But they send you a 50% voucher every time it's your birthday which is really handy.

What you can do is sign up to be an insider and enter your birthday as being in about three weeks time

Then they'll send you the coupon and then you can order shorts.Half price

I love my Llama Leisure ones.

I love my Sweaty Betty 9” running shorts.

Yes this. Cheap as chips and come in loads of colours.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 07/08/2025 22:03

Matalan, llama leisure, the cheeky magpie and m and s good moves all have shorts which match your criteria. Plus they all have at least one pocket. Llama leisure and cheeky magpie often have sales and do fab prints.
All wash and dry beautifully and stand up to a lot of punishment. Squat proof, and don’t ride up/down or scrunch your bum and bits.

Dogsrbrill · 08/08/2025 09:42

are all these cycling shorts ok when you bend over ? I think I've only heard of sweaty betty but I think I ll definitely have a look at the crz one. A PP mentions pockets , that would be handy for a phone and keys . I've always run outside but I've hurt my knees and now need to join a gym for strength training , first time in a proper gym

Uniqlo do some nice ones but depends on size needed

Dogsrbrill · 08/08/2025 10:01

I'm 5'7" and 10 stone ten so I suppose I'd be a 12/14

Sweaty betty 6 inch power shorts in medium. They will be a bit snug but definitely squat proof.

If you want something cheaper, m and s do similar ones.

If you're looking for legging-style gym shorts that finish above the knee and don’t go see-through, there are some great options out there. Brands like Alo Yoga, BALEAF, and The Gym People offer comfy, high-waisted shorts with good stretch and coverage, and they come in a range of colours, not just black. Lululemon’s Wunder Train 8-inch shorts are also a solid pick if you want something that stays in place during workouts. You might also want to check out Alo Yoga deals if you're open to exploring more activewear options at a better price.

Marks and Spencer GoodMove are usually a good shout for not too pricey sports wear

Needspaceforlego · 28/08/2025 07:37

I'm another who'd suggest M&S Goodmove. Decent gear without the designer price tag.
