I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Yeah I 100% thought all those women in identical outfits looked ridiculous.

Some other European nationalities definitely do dress in a more elegant & sophisticated fashion.

British women, especially on mumsnet have huge issues with this it seems.

There's literally nothing stopping anyone from dressing any way they like.

Why are people so exercised that others can see & comment on the collective style choices I.e. the don't be a British tourist in floral midi dresses articles.
Any ubiquitous look will attract the same commentary. This isn't new.

The floral dress wearing British women are not shy about commenting negatively on other nationalities style choices.

When and where? On here it's usually posters falling over themselves to big up how stylish French/Italian/ whatever are.

Floral v non floral
"There's only one way to sort this out! Fight!" 😂

But fighting in a dress might be more restrictive than fighting in vest and shorts. And if you take your dress off you get called an exhibitionist. Unfair advantage to the shorts wearers. 😀

Have you been reading this thread?

There's been a lot of negative comments about American style here alone...

Anyway I've given my thoughts & I'm off to get ready to go away for the day so need to get dressed (not in a floral midi. Or shorts 🙃)

I hear what you're saying but I think if you saw literally hundreds of women all wearing identik outfits at the same time in the same place it would also strike you as strangely disconcerting.

Like the handmaid's tale or similar. It was like a middle aged cult. And the fact that it was to see Rod Stewart, well that was the flowery icing on the cake for me.

It became a very particular British phenomenon & women really went mad for it. But its not a great look. Certainly not en masse

What's amusing me about this thread is the ferocity of defence at the right of British women to wear this 'trend' whilst dishing out insult after insult to Americans.....and not seeing (or caring) about the double standards 🤷‍♀️

Shorts & a sleevless top can look very stylish. As always, depending on who is wearing them. I've been to Sweden & Denmark several times & have soon some effortlessly stylish & elegant woman in shorts & sandals & vest / tank tops there. All golden long limbs etc

Not all shorts or shorts wearers are equal. Neither are all floral dresses or their wearers...

Foe me this is the crux of it. I am 58, 5ft, overweight, blue/white skin and freckly. Have aready had skin cancer and have to keep covered. The dress trend has been such a relief. I dont want to get my bingo wings out or inflict my stumpy legs on anyone. A dress (I dont do florals) is elongating and comfortable. I wear skirt dress styles all year round - unbuttoned to the thigh with black tights and boots in the cooler months and buttoned to the floor in the summer. No need to wax or tan and no decisions to make - one piece of clothing done.

Also our climate is so uncertain - we dont know when summer will arrive or how long it will last (could be in April - could just be for a random day or two) - its hard to have a summer wardrobe to wear day in day out when the weather doesnt comply.

Fair point. However, some of these floral dresses are very loose and, also, I suspect many of the wearers would be very feisty... just going on some of these comments 😉

Well said 👏! Men are never criticised for being dowdy or frumpy, or some of the other terms used on here.
Dress to please yourself, and if someone laughs at you when you're having a laugh on a night out? They're the ones with the problem ✊

Yes - all those middle-aged.British blokes at Oasis in bucket hats, parkas and Adidas T shirts haven’t been criticised as far as I’m aware.
Also British style that looks great and is practical in all weathers.

The thing is though, those women probably still own those dresses and due to the lack of summer here they’re probably still in decent condition. So is the expectation that they’re chucked away/sent to landfill because they’re considered ‘2 years out of date’? I’d rather continue to wear things that may not be the height of fashion than contribute to the planet’s massive landfill problem, partly caused by fast fashion.
Yeah, as a look it was definitely slightly overdone. But I think that’s because women found something they finally felt comfortable in! And if they feel comfortable, and like their outfit, then what’s the issue?

And that is why I still wear dresses that are years old. I CBA with fast fashion.

On another note, the ageism on this thread is depressing, and being told I look dated by the fashion police is annoying.

WingingItSince1973 · 02/08/2025 11:45

I’m actually quite shocked that a dress in summer can spark such feelings in someone? I live in dresses most year round. I don’t own shorts and would look awful in them anyway. I’m not a girly girl I wear my Docs most of the year, sandals and boots. My dresses aren’t polyester either! Such weird thoughts about dresses when they look much better than bunging on shorts and a vest! Do you wear plain shorts and vests or do they have patterns or colour? But anyway we should all wear what feels good for us.

I love buying second hand so I don’t care if it’s latest ‘fashion’ so many second hand clothes can be updated anyway or have a modern twist with accessories.

HundredMilesAnHour · 02/08/2025 11:55

When was the last time you heard a bloke being told his outfit was dated?

The precursor to this is when was the last time a man asked you what you thought of his outfit?

Tinymrscollings · 02/08/2025 11:59

I find it fascinating when threads head in this direction. This had the potential to be a really interesting conversation about why British women like a flowery flock. Instead it’s… whatever this is.

if see one more poster claim not to know what a ‘tank’ is, like they’re the Dowager Duchess of Grantham, I will not be held responsible for my actions.

I actually wasn’t sure what the OP meant by ‘tank’ 😬, I didn’t ask on here though, I googled it!

You see I’d rather have ferocious than sneery like this.

I have no skin in the floral dress game. I do wear dresses and trainers. And i Genuinely try not to judge what others are wearing. Unless it’s positively.

Wow! This thread is odd.

Such frothing because someone dared to critise the wearing of flowery dresses!

People are taking it very personally & ironically not at all afraid of thowing out some serious slights to perceived American style!

The cult of the middle aged flowery dress hit a peak about 2 years ago for me when we were driving through our city one Friday afternoon on a nice summers day. We saw some groups of women in flowery midi dresses, bare legs, white trainers, cross body bags & most with denim jackets.

It was sporadic at first but as we got closer to the city centre there were more & more of them. In small & large groups. We came to the riverside outdoor bars & it was a SEA of floral fabric.

I can honesty say i have never seen anything like it. Dh was saying oh it must be some fancy dress thing- they're all dressed the same! (😀)

I couldn't figure it out until we saw signs- Rod Stewart was playing in the city that night - we saw people approaching the venue & it was wall to wall floral & denim.

It was actually v funny to see & reminded me of that scene in Father Ted when all the housekeepers swarm.

I've never seem such an amalgamation of floral / trainers / denim as that night.

I was never drawn to that look but that totally put me off it!

Edited

You could however make this same observation about the late teens- all in grey jogging bottoms with little tops on. Hordes of them! Why pick on a certain age group of women?

IsThePopeCatholic · 02/08/2025 12:23

Falseknock · 01/08/2025 02:38

They do look hideous and old fashioned. I wouldn't be caught in a flowery dress. My daughter will go from calling me an old hag to an old granny.

Your daughter has truly absorbed misogyny. Poor thing.
