I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

You could however make this same observation about the late teens- all in grey jogging bottoms with little tops on. Hordes of them! Why pick on a certain age group of women?

Excellent point.

Although I quite like the look, I do see what you mean op. I also wonder if Brits abroad this summer are recognisable for wearing highly patterned short pyjamas everywhere (aka co-ords). I haven't been away yet so don't know if they're a thing in Europe or not

I am definitely wearing pyjamas at all times, now I'm given licence to do so by the "linen coord" rebrand. 😂I've gone mad in Cos/Arket. I've gone plain, mainly, which my BFF calls my "city scrubs" look.

God I hope this trend sticks. It's the best thing ever! (I may sound sarcastic, but I really do mean this!)

redriding1976 · 02/08/2025 12:33

There have always been trends in women's clothing. I often deal with historical photos and we date them by intricacies of clothing. I'm also a follower of a 1970s group where we reminisce about the white boots or the lace shirts or the platform shoes we wore then. Such is life 🤷‍♀️

I have totally got on board with co-ords too. I’m loving it. As easy as a dress, as versatile as separates. Love it.

TealReader · 02/08/2025 12:53

I think the floral dress and trainers look is a bit dated too (and tbh I never liked trainers with dresses). But I also think being a bit dated isn’t a crime, and it’s terribly wasteful to get rid of perfectly good clothing. Summer clothes in particular only get a few weeks wear a year so they’ll come out every year. I’ve lost a lot of weight so none of my old summer clothes fit and I’m mostly wearing culottes/wide leg trousers with t shirts/vest tops and stripy shirts. Nothing is really timeless however much we kid ourselves they are.

That moment when you click on “threads you’re on” and there are 500 messages for the thread you started after a couple of glasses of rosè….

Ok,going back to read! And apologies if I offended anyone. I could have also started an observational thread saying “There is so much traffic in the UK now, how do you not murder each other?!” but I thought that would be contentious. 😂

I've never heard of floral rage until this thread 🤣

Your daughter has truly absorbed misogyny. Poor thing.

Fizbosshoes · 02/08/2025 13:56

I guess the style of the dresses will date them to a specific era but like pp have said, they don't get lots of wear so would be wasteful to throw out after one or 2 summers. I wear my dresses with flip flops, wedge heels, pumps, trainers, or even boots, and with a fine knit cardi, a denim jacket or another jacket so not exactly the same outfit each time. I have 4 or 5 dresses that are between 1 and 4 years old. But none have been worn more than about 8 times each so I consider them still suitable to wear. Last year I added wide linen cargo trousers to my summer wardrobe and this year I bought a plain short dress, so gradually there will be more variation, but I'll still have the floral dresses for a few more years yet. My denim jacket is probably more than a decade old and that's not going anywhere!

I don't necessarily think being stylish, means replacing your wardrobe every summer?

Cathandkin · 02/08/2025 07:06

You don't think it's just... maybe a difference in clothing choices? Rather than "weird"? I just like the clothing variety that we see in the UK. If people want to spend the entire summer in shorts and a vest, fine. If not, also fine!

I’ve noticed it’s easier to dub people “ weird” than to accept difference. It’s a defence that is challenged with regard to race and sexuality, but still runs rife through all other areas!

Yes, I think diversity adds such richness. It's good to accept difference.

I mean… you willingly posted a rude and misogynistic comment that your daughter made, and are offended when people are pointing out that it’s rude and misogynistic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes! Or the ridiculously short shorts/scrunch bum leggings/White Fox hoodie/pulled up socks and ugly trainers that are like a uniform where I live.

But as usual it’s the middle-aged dress wearers who get it in the neck and often the not very thin/tall/tanned as well.

Personally floral dresses don’t suit me but plenty of people clearly feel nice and comfortable in them and why shouldn’t they.

Cathandkin · 02/08/2025 15:09

It's the usual ageism + misogyny.

I told my daughter you don't want to know what she is saying. She laughed her socks off. I don't know you why would I be offended duh.

My partner is telling me to come off now and to leave you stupid people alone 🤣

@Falseknock it’s slightly weird that you are sat asking your daughter and partner about a post on mumsnet. Do you get out much as a family?

"Stupid people" is pretty mild as an insult compared to them calling you an old hag. Have some self respect!

KateMiskin · 02/08/2025 15:49

I travelled the length of London today and saw only 2 floral dresses. The season appears to be over.
Lots of shorts and jeans wearers.

Every 3 months we go away abroad in Europe. I am just killing time until we go. I need the vitamin D.

I live in NY! There are seriously nowhere near the amount of women wearing dresses, except on a Sunday, here as there are there. It blew my mind because everyone was so hot and bothered and complaining they were hot and bothered and I was just like, "So why are you all wearing such long bloody dresses?!!"

The last line of this post popped in my head today. We are on holiday in Croatia and Italy. I've seen so many long flowy dresses on people all through this holiday. Barely any of the women wearing them have been British. It's been pretty hot and sunny and loads of women are wearing long floaty dresses because they actually keep you cool.

I've been listening in on their conversations as they've passed me. I've heard Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and a variety of Balkan languages as well as English. So I guess just the New Yorkers sticking to their tanks while the women of Europe are looking good in their flowy dresses.

henlake7 · 02/08/2025 21:18

Where are all these floral dresses? Certainly not round my way!
I rarely see a dress unless it's of the modest variety for cultural reasons.
Skirts aren't popular either ...it's all basic tops with with either shorts, leggings or cropped trousers
I miss floral dresses.

Same. We are in Malta and everyone is in a floaty dress in town.
