Shampoo and conditioner when perimenopausal…

My hair is falling out. My thick lovely hair has turned on me. I’m 47. Peri. Taking Mounjaro. What can I do to soften it again, and stop it shedding so much?

I cannot for the life of me think that Cornish seaweed shampoo is going to cut it. Surely?

Am I better to look at supplements maybe?
Open to trying anything, that sounds rational! Or maybe I’m also open to the irrational and need seaweed shampoo? ;)

I've got the Cornish shampoo and conditioner, it does help with dryness but to reduce the shedding you need HRT and also make sure you have good iron levels. I have about 50% if that of what I used to 😞

Arcadia · 31/07/2025 20:13

Following out of interest! I’m 51 and already maxed out on HRT and all sorts of supplements, and I’m shedding, my hair feels dry and it’s really thinning at the front on one side. I get loads of ads for hair products etc popping up in my Facebook feed now!

Busydoingsomething · 31/07/2025 20:15

Following, as having the same at 51. I’ve started on collagen but it’s too soon to say if it’s having an effect yet.

Arcadia · 31/07/2025 20:17

@BusydoingsomethingI heard that collagen only works if you have an actual deficiency otherwise it’s useless. It’s so hard to know what’s true though!

MarySueSaidBoo · 31/07/2025 20:20

Plantur 39 has really helped me. It took around 6 months of use to really notice the difference however, but my hairdresser did say I had lots of new growth.

ChristmasLightsLover · 31/07/2025 20:25

Sorry should have written in my OP that I’m on estrogen gel and progesterone. And I’m taking magnesium. Will now read the replies properly….

What are your ferritin levels? My hair was coming out in handfuls and my ferritin was 16.

Ive got it back up to over 100 and hair loss has stopped.

I had the mirena fitted, stopped the heavy bleeding and took iron tablets every 48hrs for 6 months.

ChristmasLightsLover · 31/07/2025 20:36

@MarySueSaidBoo interesting to hear you rate the Plantur 39. The reviews on boots.com are wildly varying. I’m scared to potentially turn my grey hairs orange! But have been reading about caffeine so am open to it, if you promise my greys will stay as they are ;)

I’d happily add an iron supplement in. Can’t see that harming me @Notsurewheretostarthere@TheUsualChaos- sounds like a good starting point. No idea on my ferritin levels so may as well try it.

There so much out there on collagen. I might go and see what Sali Hughes has to say about it actually. I’ve always trusted her with skincare and beauty… Although googling it will bring alllll the adverts, won’t it?!

Would love to hear on how it turns out @Busydoingsomething… Also, excellent user name.

I’m in the same boat ☹️ Although I have been taking pumpkin seed oil supplements and I was extremely sceptical at first but after being on them for about 3months & I can see tiny baby hairs growing though and I don’t shed hair half as much as I used to, in fact it’s very rare I see any hair in the shower now

menopausalfart · 31/07/2025 20:46

I've tried every bloody thing. I've been having great results with Nioxin System 4. I'm still losing a bit of hair, but not as much as I was.

fiorentina · 31/07/2025 20:48

I definitely have had to up my iron after hair loss was the indicator my levels were low. Hair has improved but not back to how it was.

Candlesandmatches · 31/07/2025 20:56

Ozempic made my hair fall out. A lot. It’s due to the speed of weight loss and the stress in the body. Hair isn’t essential so that what gives.
increase your protein.
Regain was quite good. You have to keep using it.
My hair did go back to its previous thickness.

Betsy95 · 31/07/2025 20:59

Scandinavian Biolabs shampoo is good it’s a bit expensive though, collagen and iron supplements too

MarySueSaidBoo · 31/07/2025 21:05

Don't buy the "grey" or "brown" plantur - my hair went orange with the brown one! I just get this:
www.plantur39.com/en-gb/shampoos-tonic-co/phyto-caffeine-shampoo-fine-brittle-hair

Holluschickie · 31/07/2025 21:10

The Indian cure is coconut or almond oil left on for a few hours. If you don't mind the smell. I leave on overnight.
It's cheap too.

Summerhillsquare · 31/07/2025 21:58

Regaine does help, it takes a few months but I have regrowth. My Oribe gold lust hair oil has helped keep it supple.

Mmmkaay · 31/07/2025 22:14

I've been taking biotin one a day supplements and that seems to have helped - definitely less fall out.

DiligentStrawberry · 31/07/2025 22:18

Solgar Hair, Skin and Nail supplements. Two every day. Big difference after six months.

AmberHoney · 31/07/2025 22:35

Adding olive oil to your salads can help.
Also, I find eating a few avocados a week have helped.
Avocado and eggs on toast are tasty.
After a weeks you will definitely notice a difference.

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/07/2025 22:41

The Kerastase Genesis range is targeted at hair fall. It’s not cheap but it does make a difference.

It’s entirely possible that the hair loss is down to fast weight loss rather than perimenopause.

Rather than Regaine which you have to keep applying, I started taking Minoxidil tablets (prescribed by Hair & Me) and between this and the Kerastase my hair is growing back now (hurray!).

londongirl12 · 31/07/2025 22:51

I use regaine. Has definitely made a difference.

TheUsualChaos · 01/08/2025 21:04

Do you apply regaine to dry hair? I only need to wash my hair once or twice a week.
