What does everyone think of grey hair?

Over the last 2 years I grew out my hair, it's quite grey but I just couldn't handle the regrowth reappearing every 3 weeks and didn't have time or money to deal with it. My hair was quite dark so I had been dying it dark brown. But now it's pure white in places, salt and pepper on top and still dark underneath. I asked a hair dresser if I should go blonde to hide regrowth but she said Im too dark. And I can't stand the regrowth with brunette. What do people think of grey? Or what does everyone else with hair like this do? I'm 45, don't like looking so old...

Thankfully?

I also wondered why thankfully!

I’ve posted this pic lots before so apologies to anyone who has seen it too many times. I’m not the best at pictures hence using this one. I was 48.5 in this pic, I’m nearly 50 now and it’s the same.

I do think it depends on your hair type.. I’m really, really lucky because mine is soft and shiny still and is quite silvery, whereas some people’s is coarse and dry.

I don’t think I look any older than I am. Not that it would matter because I can’t dye anymore due to allergies. I also get far more compliements about it than I ever did when it was brown. And most are from younger people.

I always say to give it a go OP and if you don’t like you can always go back to the dye.

I like it lots and it doesn't make you look older. Nice hairstyle too. No cauliflower hairdo's here 😁

I had to grow my hair out because allergic to my usual hair dye. Everyone has told me it looks good but I'm not sure I believe them! 😄

I've not had it cut for a bit because of various reasons. I mostly really don't like it grey and I'm considering going back to an Aveda hairdresser for ideas. I had a test with their dye and it was fine.

I'm getting my haircut this afternoon actually and my brows waxed and dyed darker tomorrow. I think it looks better when really maintained but I'd go back to dark in a flash. EXCEPT it was pretty awful growing it out, and to do that again....

I've seen plenty of women who look fab with grey hair. Some not so fab. And everything in between really.

I’m 57.

tobee · 24/07/2025 14:52

@GreyRooted you look great! I wish my hair was that colour. Mine's very patchy.

Hoolahoophop · 24/07/2025 14:55

@marmite2025 Thanks for sharing the gorgeous lady with the fantastic curls. I might just start to follow her myself. I have the same curl pattern, its just starting to grey and I don't plan on dying it. In fact i might use that picture as in inspiration for my next curly cut!

I think it’s incredibly aging. I have a number of c50-55 yr old friends who are letting it grow out. They don’t look so fantastic

We are aging though - absolutely nothing wrong with looking your natural age.

Morgenrot25 · 24/07/2025 15:28

Mumblechum0 · 24/07/2025 00:00

personally I presume someone is at least 60plus if they’re grey.

I know I’m probably wrong but it’s just an automatic assumption for me. I’m early sixties and don’t plan to go grey for years yet even though it costs a fortune to have it professionally coloured frequently.

Why?
Most people start greying well before that age.

Exactly!

I'm 52 and I've been grey for about 7 years. I have a youngish face and lots of people think I'm quite a bit younger than I am despite the grey. I have had a lot more compliments on my hair than I ever had before I was grey! People even ask if it's dyed! It does look good with my olive skin tone, I think. I also use a purple conditioner on it so it's not yellowy but more of a metallic grey. I love it, and the freedom from dyeing and looking like I'm trying to cover it up. I don't really wear makeup either so the dye just looked wrong with my overall 'natural look'.

People often ask me what colour I have on mine too. I use a purple shampoo once a week as well and that helps the shine and stops any dullness.

Badgergrey · 24/07/2025 16:33

This is mine, completely natural colour. I sometimes use a purple shampoo if it looks a bit yellow. And if anyone thinks it's ageing, well, stuff 'em - one of the advantages of age is that I have very few damns left to give.

What does everyone think of grey hair?
PinkBobby · 24/07/2025 17:36

Have a look at grey blending for dark hair - you’ll see that there are amazing things that can be done to ease into grey/include grey tones rather than just go blonde. There are even specialist hair dressers who can do amazing things.

Saying this, I’m all for embracing the grey. I’ve watched my mum dye her hair every two minutes at vast expense and it’s just not for me. I’m super dark haired so when there’s a lot of grey, it will be quite a shock, I’m sure, but it’s just the next change I’ll go through - I’m sure I’ll survive! I mean, I’ve survived what having kids has done so surely a bit of grey won’t be so bad?! 😂

Melancholyflower · 24/07/2025 18:04

GameOfJones · 24/07/2025 13:01

I laughed at that too. Presumably because SIL apparently looks 30 despite being 55 which is quite clearly rubbish. Even Jennifer Lopez doesn't look 30. 🤣

I'm intrigued to know how someone can have the face of a 30 year old, without a single wrinkle, but can simultaneously look 60,

Pennyswimsplash · 24/07/2025 18:05

Don’t like it at all, unless female is over 85

Let’s have a look at your hair @Pennyswimsplash and we’ll decide if we like yours or notGrin

Vicliz24 · 24/07/2025 18:11

I grew out my grey at 49 . My natural colour was very dark brown . Zero regrets here . It’s halfway down my back with lots of volume and bounce . I have never felt I look old with grey hair .

Pennyswimsplash · 24/07/2025 18:15

I’m very happy and comfortable with my hair and don’t feel the need to ask anyone’s opinion or provide a show and tell for you because you don’t agree with my answer. Do remember the original poster asked what peoples views were on grey hair 😜

BlueBelle7979 · 24/07/2025 18:17

I have T-foils to blend in my grey every couple of months. Grey I think is aging. A colleague in work dyed her hair grey when it was all the rage and it aged her 20 years

EmuFace · 24/07/2025 18:19

I’m nearly a year into growing out my grey. Aged 52. I went blonde to mask it but got so fed up with losing a Saturday every 6 weeks - and my hair was in a horrible condition. I just couldn’t be arsed any more. It doesn’t look great at the moment but will probably go short next hair cut and job done. I think nice clothes and jewellery and a dash of red lipstick 💄 and it will all be grand. 😀

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 24/07/2025 18:24

I've been totally grey since early 40s - nearly 50 now and its getting lighter and lighter silver, which i love.

Sharp pixie and purple shampoo to keep it bright and shiny. Fond of a quiff for a night out Grin

i'd have to dye it every two weeks, sod that.

I think i look exactly the age i am. Fine with me. DH is totally bald and he doesn't care either Grin

My sister in law is 55. She has a face of a 30 year old and good body and excellent style but stopped dying her hair black and she looks c.60 with it just due to the hair getting progressively grey. I know I’m preconditioned to like the preserved youth look, which is wrong. I always wince when I see her as she doesn’t have a single wrinkle on her. It’s just so out of place ! My mum, who is 67, looks younger (she dies her her dark).

Nobody who has the face of a 30 year old looks 60 just because they have grey hair!
