Wedding guest dress - does this look dated?

lavenderjune · 20/07/2025 12:26

Attending a family church wedding next weekend. I have bought this Karen Millen dress on Vinted but now wondering if it looks a bit dated. I only paid £10 for it, so I could potentially find something else. I’m only 5ft 1 and size 6/8 so I don’t find it that easy to find a dress that fits. I’ve tried petite long dresses but they make me look like a little girl. Please can I have some honest answers as my husband thinks it’s fine but probably just pleased I’ve just found something after the endless searching!

It's not fashionable, but it's classic wedding wear and you'll fit right in. For £10 it's a bargain.

Meadowfinch · 20/07/2025 13:56

It's lovely OP. If you have the figure to carry it off, go for it. 🙂

Maggispice · 20/07/2025 13:56

It's stylish and classy. Top it up with a lovely fascinator.

Silvertulips · 20/07/2025 13:59

ohhh pink shoes!!

Who dictates fashion?

We don’t have to follow everyone else.

It’s a wedding go and have fun.

think it’s timeless to be honest for a wedding it’s lovely

I agree. Classic.

ANagsHead · 20/07/2025 14:01

@BlueandPinkSwan - not sure you’re quite grasping the purpose of this board - Style and Beauty - or the focus of the OP’s question.

It does look dated, @lavenderjune - but assuming the fabric is lovely, and the dress suits you, and you accessorise with things from this decade, it will be perfectly appropriate for a wedding and you’ll probably look very nice.

GivingUpFinally · 20/07/2025 14:03

Definitely go for it. If you want to bring it a bit more fashion forward I'd go for bright coloured shoe. Pink, blue or that scarlet/orangey red on the dress.

It's fun and very wedding guest.

Angrymum22 · 20/07/2025 14:06

As long as it fits beautifully and you accessorise it with shoes and bag and maybe a big hat ( on trend for weddings) it will be spot on.
My DSis gets married next month and I have bought a new dress but managed to find a bargain pair of shoes on Vinted and I’m adding decor to a plain hat to match the dress. It’s a church wedding so hats are a must.

ANagsHead · 20/07/2025 14:37

Actually, I’d edit my post above to say it looks not so much dated as vintage - which is a good thing!

Blondebrownorred · 20/07/2025 14:47

Yes it is dated. Depends whether you're bothered by that or not.

HelloHattie · 20/07/2025 14:47

Bargain!

AgentLisbon · 20/07/2025 14:51

I do think it looks dated, that bright floral on a white background was very 2010s, but I agree with others the accessories (especially the shoes!) can make it look more intentionally retro.

Borracha · 20/07/2025 14:52

I think it will come down to how you style it. Courts, a pashmina and a fascinator à la Debenhams - yes, I think it could look a little dated. But I think if you find some shoes in the bright coral colour and a more modern looking bag, it will look fab. I love the neckline. I wouldn’t wear a necklace but instead find some great earrings - something again maybe in the coral.

For the record, I am no fashionista and this is just my opinion!! Have a great time x

Flossflower · 20/07/2025 15:05

We are all jealous of your figure! You will look fabulous.

TheLeadbetterLife · 20/07/2025 16:19

It's dated for sure, but it's pretty, so it's up to you whether that matters OP.

This is rather gorgeous, and would be perfect for a church wedding:

At £153 … when OP has a perfectly acceptable £10 vintage dress.

Oh, I grasp it alright no worries on that one.
I was responding to the OP saying it was a lovely dress. Also there are ideas on here that some peeps fawn over but imo look awful.
I'm allowed to post what I want to, I like clothes but I don't get the it's fashionable herd mentality. As I previously said everyone is entitled to their opnion on here.

Gabitule · 20/07/2025 19:01

Wow, I have a similar floral on white dress (it’s A line, not fitted) and I didn’t realise it would be considered dated! I was completely oblivious!
Anyway, I love it, I think it’s perfect for a summer wedding

Agree with this. It’s a little dated, the print and bodycon fit especially but with the right accessories it will look fine.

I would double check that it’s not a very traditional/conservative church where the wedding is taking place as bare shoulders are not considered appropriate in some more conservative churches. If it’s C of E though, it’ll be fine.

Echobelly · 20/07/2025 19:16

It looks pretty timeless to me, go for it

AnotherDayAnotherDog · 20/07/2025 19:21

Westfacing · 20/07/2025 13:27

It is a lovely dress but in pure fashion terms it is dated.

It depends on your age, how much you care about current fashion, and the social circle you move in as to whether you'll be comfortable wearing it.

If you can afford it I would buy something else - it's £10 for a reason.

I'd say genuinely vintage, not dated. Nobody else will be wearing one. You'll look great, wear it.

I think it's the fit, rather than the florals, which dates it.

OP specifically asked for honest answers as to whether her dress was dated. To me it doesn't read vintage, it reads 2010s, which is absolutely fine, but it's obviously bothering the OP, else she wouldn't have asked.

geoger · 20/07/2025 19:29

That’s a pretty dress which looks more classic wedding guest than dated. Wear it with some pink or coral shoes with nice earrings and you’re sorted. For £10 it’s an absolute bargain and it was made at a time when Karen Millen dresses were good quality.
Btw I’ve got a couple of similar dresses from Ted Baker that I just cant give away

SweetFancyMoses · 20/07/2025 19:38

It’s not fashionable, but it is fine for a wedding. I’d be inclined to change the straps, but I’m fairly handy with a sewing machine.
