Are my highlights stripey?

Got highlights the other day. She also put a dye on the roots for the bits she didn’t highlight to cover the greys. I feel like it looks a bit stripey. Opinions please? Perhaps I am just being too picky.

Feel v awkward about having to go back in as there was an issue with the last colour too.

No, I think they’re really lovely.

I like it.

looks good

Yes. I used to have this so often, really frustrating. I eventually started having an all over tint with highlights. Was more subtle. But more expensive 🙈

Skissors · 16/07/2025 11:21

They look fine to me. They don't fully start at the roots but maybe they're not supposed to..

I had highlights once that were bumblebee like and I had to go back to the hairdressers for that. She did say that it would blend in around 2
weeks but i couldn't face the embarrassment for that time. Never had highlights again

SaintGermain · 16/07/2025 11:27

It does look very 1990s with obvious stripes but that is a look that some women go for.

Are you pleased with it is all that matters.

So I think this is what they actually did for me. She does the highlights and then a tint on the full head for all the bits that aren’t in foil. It cost £130 so it wasn’t exactly cheap. It looks ok on one side but the side I have photographed is the side I am not happy with. In certain lights it looks too stripey but can’t work out if I am imagining it.

I think it would be good to add a pic with your hair down so we can see the difference and also compare to the other side?

This is the other side which I think looks good. Don’t have a pic of it down but it doesn’t look as bad down. So it’s just the left side I am not sure about

I agree that it does look a bit more stripy on one side, but I actually really like those highlights. They give a lot of dimension to your hair, and the colour’s good too (not too yellow, not too ashy).

Bitzee · 16/07/2025 12:30

The highlights are nice but you do look like you’re due your next appt as opposed to fresh from the hairdressers…

Moveoverdarlin · 16/07/2025 12:32

I wouldn’t go back for that. It doesn’t look stripy like 90s highlights, but you can pick out the two colours. Looks good if you ask me.

That’s a ridiculous thing to say!

Why is that ridiculous? Whilst the colour is lovely they don’t go the roots and IMO look like they’re growing out and were done 3-4 weeks ago.

KittytheHare · 16/07/2025 12:41

@Bitzee the op has had an all over colour as well as highlights. This is how my hair looks when I leave the hairdresser - maybe I’m biased.

I haven’t seen yours obviously, as long as you’re happy with it then that’s what matters :)

OP did ask for opinions and that’s just mine, that the root colour + highlights starting further down makes it look (in those photos at least) as if they’re starting to grow out. I don’t think that’s a ridiculous opinion… but sorry if I offended you in anyway, that really wasn’t my intention.

Granted it may also look totally different down and could be that it’s the tight ponytail making the roots look more pronounced which is why I also didn’t comment on whether or not it’s stripy… because maybe in the 2nd pic but it could just as easily be the way it’s brushed back.

I will say though that the colour is lovely and really suits you OP even if the highlight technique is potentially a bit iffy. It’s definitely not a disaster or anything like that. Probably I wouldn’t go back in ask for a correction but if this is the second time you’ve not been totally happy I’d try somewhere else next time. It’s your hair, you’re entitled to be picky!

I really like it, good colour, I think its blended really well.

PollyCherry · 16/07/2025 15:54

I think it’s nice but see what you mean about one side v the other. Perhaps you could get more darker blonde on the “stripy” side

Squarestones · 16/07/2025 15:59

I can see a difference but I think I wouldn't really notice if I saw you just naturally rather than seeing one side of you at once to compare them. One side does look a bit more natural than the other but both sides are a good set of colours and seem to suit your skin tone. I don't think I'd go back but maybe next time show them the side you like in this photo and say you loved that so want to repeat it that way all over?

Having said all that 130 is not cheap, as you say, so if you're not happy then you should feel able to go back and ask if they can adjust.

I’m swaying towards waiting it out until my next colour appointment. To fix it they’ll probably need to put more highlights over the dark bits which has a tint on it so could be more drying and damaging for my hair. Tempted to try another hairdresser as have had quite a view visits back after my appointment for corrections.

It looks great

GivingUpFinally · 16/07/2025 16:27

Don't wait. They don't look good at all. It looks like she's missed your parting. Which is why it's soft on one side and striped on the other side or it's the foil pattern that was used and she rushes one side. It's not acceptable hairdressing at all. You need a few scattered prelightener foils put in to break up the darker colour and a few weaved/free hand/balayaged pieces to break up the lighter chunks. 20 ish foils should sort it out.

MBJ15 · 16/07/2025 16:43

Do you have a side parting? That would potentially make the side that looks more “blended” less defined in where it was highlighted.
