First time bikini wax!

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 27/06/2025 07:24

So I’m going away on 1st August. I am fed up of shaving bikini line for it to be back again in a few days and having red bumpy ugly areas!

So I want to brave a bikini wax. However I am scared and embarrassed!

I mean how long do I grow the hair for before? I have thick black hair. Do I wear knickers whilst they do it? How sore will it be after and how long does it take to come back? Will it last me a 10 day holiday?!

Worried I’ll end up with sore bits for holiday and it looking even worse! TIA!!

I would have it done 2 days before. For me, the redness will have gone down at that point.

whether you wear knickers or not: I have had both scenarios. I prefer no knickers as I have Brazilians and want them to get it all!

i would trim the length on the day of the wax.
yes it will last 10 days! And shouldn’t be sore at all. Shame you couldn’t have had one before the holiday; then did the holiday wax end of July

good luck!

Thank you! I am so fed up of stubbly bumps around my bikini area that I then try and reshave that I need to bite the bullet!

yes I did think that! Could have trialled it already! If I’m honest I’d like a Brazilian to get it all off but also too embarrassed… I mean ffs I’ve had a baby I wish I didn’t care!!

They’ve (beauticians) have seen it all before. As long as you’ve just had a shower there’s nothing to worry about. You’re just another appointment. Tbh!

I replied as I have a wax app at 10:30. It’s routine now, I hate shaving f as it’s itchy.

get it booked 😁

TeamKneeLength · 27/06/2025 10:53

Also have thick black hair. It's painful, but only briefly, and the beautician should slop on some lotion afterwards. The woman who does mine just squirts the lotion on and leaves me to spread it out and rub it in. Makes a bit of a mess of undies (I wear mine, but am never, ever going to have a Brazilian!) and I would wear a loose outer layer (skirt or trousers) to your appt as it's going to feel weird for a bit. I never shave in between - partly laziness, partly that there aren't many occasions when my bikini line is visible (and as I get older I care less and less).

What I would say is that you should go somewhere that you know is scrupulous about waxing hygiene. Ought to be a given, but isn't.

OverlyFragrant · 27/06/2025 11:07

Don't schedule it for the week before or after your period. Your skin is extra thin and sensitive then.
Also, take 2 ibuprofen and hour before you go (even better codeine if you have them, laying there getting waxed slightly off your face is recommended for the first go).
Honestly, it's no where near as bad as you think in your head, and I'm now a convert to the Brazilian a few times a year.

Any excuse for some codeine… you’ve convinced me lol!!

@Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee obviously don’t drive to your appointment if you’re going to take codeine.
I think if you need to take hard core OTC drugs maybe a wax isn’t for you. 😂

Volver · 27/06/2025 16:34

A bikini wax is easy basically round your bikini and a bit more up your thighs/towards groin but doesn’t touch vaginal labia.
Its fast and doesn’t hurt at all, just wear high leg knickers and beautician will ask you how high you want her to wax.
Will last 3 weeks+ and agree do it at least 24 hours before travel/sun exposure.

However…
A Brazilian means all your labia and that sounds incredibly painful to me (and unnecessary, I mean why?) so you don’t need to do that at all to wear a bikini

Recycledblonde · 27/06/2025 16:43

I have a Hollywood so everything off. Hot wax on the outer labia and strip wax on the rest. It’s a little painful but no worse than waxing legs. Just had it done today and it’s not sore at all.
The beauticians are very chilled and really have seen it all before. Ask them what they want you to keep on/take off and explain it’s your first time.

TouchOfSilverShampoo · 27/06/2025 16:48

Don’t trim anything as advised up thread. Bigger bush the better and the therapist won’t give a shit what you look like - she will be looking at 30 vulvas per day.

I get a Hollywood which is all off. Brazilian leaves a landing strip but otherwise takes everything off including labia.

A bikini wax is just the edges. So be clear about what you want beforehand.

Book a therapist that uses hot wax, it’s definitely less painful.

Take a few painkillers an hour before and breathe through it. Enjoy smooth skin 👌🏻

YControl · 27/06/2025 18:40

I am going to give slightly different advice and say if you can get a wax in the next day or so and then again a day or two before (so 4 weeks apart) that would be ideal. The first time you get waxed your hairs are all at different points in the growth cycle so they can come back quite quick (although should be fine for a holiday). If you go regularly your hairs tend to be at the same point in their growth cycle so the regrowth is slower and even.

Everyone else has it spot on, the waxers see it all! I get a Brazilian or G-string and upper legs done every 4 weeks and the regrowth is definitely finer than it used to be.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 27/06/2025 19:46

Those of you who have Brazilian or Hollywood - what do you then do about the hair inside your labia?

Dueindecemberr · 27/06/2025 20:04

Agree with @YControl , I would get a wax done in the next couple of days and then again just before yout holiday. I started getting bikini waxes last year after a long break. I don’t think you need the painkillers. Remember to exfoliate in between to avoid bumpy skin.

Teenybub · 27/06/2025 20:43

If I was you I would book to go now and then again just before your holiday. I’ve been going a few years now and there is less each time and it lasts longer. Get a gentle exfoliator and use that every other day too, it will get rid of any ingrown hairs that might form. I would get a bikini this time and then next time go further in. I take my knickers off because then she can see what she’s doing and nowhere gets missed but I think it’s personal preference. They don’t care though so don’t worry about feeling embarrassed, mine is so focused on what she is doing she picked an ingrown hair out while chatting away to me without even realising that she had done it.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 27/06/2025 19:46

They take that off too! When I leave there is nothing at all left except the odd really short one that the wax hasn’t picked up.

poppy10101 · 27/06/2025 20:49

We’ve seen it all and are more worried about getting all the hair than what you look like. I get my ladies on all fours with no knickers and pull their bum cheeks apart……you don’t want any stragglers!

If I hadn’t been for a wax before this would put me off, I’ve never had to do this and I’ve never had a hair missed. I understand that the waxer isn’t bothered but there is still
a limit to what I would feel comfortable with.

You absolutely don’t need to do that! I’ve never done it and wouldn’t feel comfortable, I appreciate why waxers always say it to show how unbothered they are but I would always say no and wouldn’t go back if they tried to insist. They only do the back for a Brazilian/hollywood anyway which isn’t what you’ve booked.

justasking111 · 27/06/2025 21:37

Was shaved when in labour with first baby, gawd that regrowth drove me mad. Full leg wax twice, was agony around my ankles tears rolled down my face. Decided to give up then unless they ever came up with knockout drops.

YControl · 27/06/2025 21:38

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 27/06/2025 21:04

I have also never had to do this with a Brazilian! I wear the wee disposable pants and my waxer moves them around and I have a towel discreetly placed 😂

Anyway for a basic bikini you definitely won't do that and can just keep your underwear on.

StarlightLady · 28/06/2025 06:56

I’ve had Hollywood waxes every 4 weeks for almost as long as l can remember, reason being l don’t like the appearance where the hair growth stops and starts but that’s personal to me. There’s no embarrassment, she is doing her job. I just go in, strip down to the waist and hop on the table, then it’s very similar to what l call “hairdresser chat”.

l would agree with some of the suggestions up thread about going now and then go again just before your holiday.

ln addition, l would suggest.

  • The first time is the worst.
  • Painkillers beforehand. The body tends to get used to what is being done to it, l don’t bother or feel the need anymore. After the first few times l would describe it as mild discomfort.
  • Avoid being done just before a period.
  • Don’t have sex the same day.
  • lf you think you have found a good beautician, stick with her. You build up an understanding of each other’s requirements over time.
poppy10101 · 28/06/2025 09:13

I was just explaining that we see it all. Other people had described the type of was the op would be having.
The person doing the waxing really isn’t bothered. All they care about is doing the job and reducing the pain for the client.

Coconutter24 · 28/06/2025 09:22

I’ve only ever had one bikini wax and never again! I had red bumps which were really sore and then they turned to whiteheads it looked and felt awful!! And took over a week to go so for the first time I definitely wouldn’t go a couple of days before just incase something like that happened

It sounds as if someone has done a bad job. But if the OP goes now, she’ll have time to opt out of the next appointment should things not work out.
