It was £6.00 in the charity shop today. It's 100% cotton from H&M, the colour is a light stone. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I love the embroidery.

How do I make it look chic rather than like granny's nighty!

I can belt it to bring in the waist but then it loses the volume and flow. I've got black, brown, white or silver trainers. I have got patent black shoes but they rub. Not much in the way of sandals, just bright pink ones or cream crocs.

I've got a meeting in London on Friday and this could be perfect for the hot sticky tube...

No, it’s not. If you turned up to a meeting with me in that I’d think you’d lost your mind - and I have complete freedom to dress as I like for my working life.

Oddly it would be better in winter where it could be layered with boots and jumpers and scarves. But in summer you will look like a dishrag by the time you exit the Tube.

(I should say I live in a city full of chic students, and even here, that look just doesn’t work, even on 20 year olds …)

madaboutpurple · 25/06/2025 19:37

You could wear your pink sandals and get a pink bag from Primark and that would be splendid. Have you got a nice coat to wear.?

pumicepumy · 25/06/2025 19:45

It's a little bit night dress, I'd use it as a beach cover up with any type of sandal.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 25/06/2025 20:09

It's certainly not a work meeting dress, I'd wear that either on the beach or pottering around at home

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 25/06/2025 22:59

I usually roll my eyes when posters say "looks like a nighty/ looks like pyjamas" but are you sure that isn't actually a nightdress?

Like ANagsHead I've got complete freedom (most of the time) on work wear, but no I wouldn't wear that.

Beautifuldog · 25/06/2025 23:11

Sorry OP your love of the embroidery on this is skewing your perception of the overall look. It’s giving nightie vibes & would only look right with sandals & a summerbag, or with flips flops over swimwear on holiday - but def not a meeting in London.

Confuzzleduzzled · 25/06/2025 23:14

Could you cut the bottom half off, hem it and wear it as a blouse?

CarpeVitam · 25/06/2025 23:21

Sorry OP, but it does look like a nightdress!

BrillantBriony · 25/06/2025 23:27

I’d probably go for Ancient Greek sandles as pictured I wouldn’t do shoes with ankle strap as I don’t think it would be as flattering for your leg shape. And I would layer with some necklaces I think you could get away with quite chunky styles as you look pear shaped so you’d want to balance that out. I wouldn’t do long necklaces and I would layer necklaces as pictured. Good luck with the meeting!

Not sure cutting it down to a blouse would help. It would still look - frankly - scruffy.

bythefireplace · 25/06/2025 23:54

I would keep it just for hot days at home TBH, it is very much giving nightdress!

normalisnotme · 25/06/2025 23:58

I looks like a night dress.

But we can do something with it right black belt pull it up a tad so it comes over the belt but not covering it iyswim heals or flats.
Push up bra hair up nice ear rings.
Head up and fucking own it you got this op.🙂

She'd look like she was off to a fancy dress party as a Roman Centurian.

OP - its not for work. Beach. Bed. Backgarden.

ANagsHead · 26/06/2025 00:10

Push up bra Hmm

Put down the wine, @normalisnotme - it’s late. (Or should I address you as Gok Wan??)

Lol i dont drink but i am having a coffee.
But we just work with what we have if we can pull it together why not.
Who want to see negative comments all the time.
Op needs positive ideas to work with not negatives.

ANagsHead · 26/06/2025 00:25

Nope. She needs honest opinions of the impression she will create.

Obviously if her meeting is with an artist who will be painting or sculpting her image in a state of deshabille then the nightdress outfit will be spot on. But she hasn’t said so …

GoodVibesHere · 26/06/2025 02:40

It would go very nicely with a pair of slippers.

Honestly, it's a nightie, or a beach dress at most.

Thisisntme1 · 26/06/2025 03:33

It looks see through. I wouldn’t wear this to a meeting

heldinadream · 26/06/2025 04:23

I have to say I agree with everyone but I have an idea that MIGHT save it. And I do love a chazzer buy.
Dye it yellow - the embroidery looks like it's a dark colour or colours so it should still stand out. Iron it to within an inch of its life so that it's crisp (don't sit down or get crushed on tube! 😂). And wear dark green trousers under it - maybe linen wide leg? So you're wearing it as a long tunic.

Otherwise, well, I thought 'Beach. Bed. Backgarden.' was succinct advice.

ArcticBells · 26/06/2025 06:03

Really sorry but it does look like a night dress

Daffodilsarefading · 26/06/2025 06:06

It screams beach cover up to me.

Thingyfanding · 26/06/2025 06:14

Brown leather sandals and a beach bag. It’s not the one for a meeting in London.

onehorserace · 26/06/2025 06:42

It could be worn as a dress on holiday when you are very tanned. It's not a London meeting one, sorry.

SpacedOutOut · 26/06/2025 06:46

That really does look like a nightdress. I’d lounge around the house and garden in it but definitely not to a meeting.

greengreyblue · 26/06/2025 06:49

It’s nice but I’d keep for garden or beach wear. Not work meeting attire. If you belt it the length will be shorter too.
