What do you wear to work if you are fat, fifty and fookin boiling hot?

I'm eyeing up my wardrobe, wondering what the hell to wear to work in the next couple of days when I have visitors at work.

It's not a suit environment so casual is ok but I would like to look cool and not a sweaty and uncomfortable blob.

Maxi dresses all seem either too strappy or frilly and flouncy.

I do trainers and DMS, so I'm not particularly a dressy person. Bit alternative perhaps. I like a lot of black or monochrome. I don't mind some bright colours. I don't do patterns and fussy stuff.

Style and beauty is not my usual stomping ground!

Natural fibers. Which colours suit you? Keep basics plain and add colours and patterns you love with a scarf.

Mumwithbaggage · 20/06/2025 12:54

H and M is always my go to, especially for cotton dresses/trousers.

Popsy skater dresses in T-shirt fabric are my go-to for the small hot part of summer (I know they are famous for extremely bright patterns, but they also do plain coloured dresses and more discreet patterns). They are extremely easy to wear and light, but shaped enough to still look "dressed" and have pockets.

They are 100% polyester, no?

They are 100% polyester, no?

Some of the styles are, but they do several types in cotton (I think it is 95% cotton 5% stretch).

Loose linen

ChocolateGanache · 20/06/2025 16:25

Cotton dress with cotton chub rub shorts underneath and big buckle birkies.

Well, while waiting for my Italian mocha potato sack dress to arrive, I saw this in Sainsbury's at lunchtime. Twenty quid. Worth a go.

It's not bad.

NRTFT but I have just bought a linen shirt dress from Sainsbury's. Very flattering and very cool. I'm generally a clammy sod but have been out today in 30degrees and have been fine. They do them on black, white and a neutral stripe. It's effortlessly smart (and I am far from that most of the time)

Jamandtoastfortea · 20/06/2025 17:36

I wear (couple of years old) Boden maxi dresses with chunky sandals (reiker / Marco tozzi) or trainers. They are my dresses that were initially not for work as too nice but now relegated as time goes on! Boden sale starts on Sunday! I have winter versions too with flat boots.

Global mandala cotton dresses or kaftan. Super cheap and wash well

Diversion · 20/06/2025 21:27

I wore this to work today https://www.emp.co.uk/p/mora-dress/395389.html?model=true with chunky shoes. You could wear it with DM's and fishnets too. If you are happy in alternative clothing have a look at Killstar. They do maxi dresses which are not frilly etc. I am not a girly girl, but this dress has kept me cool all day. Also short and size 16/18. I am lucky that our office is casual wear.

Mora Dress

- Lacing across the neckline - Sleeveless - V-neck

I tried those on but they were all wrong on me. Bought some today - let me see if I can find them. I went down to a 12 for the best fit (usually a 14).

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/06/2025 23:03

Im finding most of the linen and linen mix wide leg trousers from M and S this year are quite good. Both dd and I have one particular type, which is only £27.50 or similar, and they’re a bargain. I have them in two colours.

I bought this from The White Company, I’m 53, 5 foot 4 and size 12/14 it’s super comfortable and flattering. I sized down and bought the small as they run larger, and had to call a store to get it sent as they have run out online for a good reason. And yes, pockets!

That’s gorgeous!!

Hi there im same, I wear light floaty culottes usually. I like Whistles it's on the pricy side but worth it. Also maeve "The culotte" trousers from Anthropologie are lush amazing lightweight stretch material but flattering. Yes a bit pricy but again worth it cost per wear. Cheap stuff looks cheap and not flattering. I would rather have a couple really nice items than a dozen cheap that look naff.
I DO NOT buy anything with a full elasticated waist as always hangs wrong and not right on me. Smart
ong shorts/Culottes always a winner

Thanks everyone. Keep it coming.

I've looked at all links but none are me.

Also, can't be having polyester so some dresses I like and then they're sweaty fabric. No good.

Poetry stuff was probably most possible but pricey. Ralph Lauren... Way out of my league. Forgot MN are well off! 😁

I think I kind of hate my legs now. I think even five years ago, I would have worn a knee length or shorter dress but now I feel a bit exposed. That Boden one is nice but I wouldn't wear it to work. I can't have near legs at work I don't think. Too pasty and chubby now.

I like the idea of floaty maxi dresses BUT they seem to have those bottom flouncy bits which just annoy me.

I'm a nightmare. Maybe I need transporting to the seventies for a kaftan 🙈 or just stay away from people until winter.

I will look at Uniqlo but I think I have given up before becoming I do not understand their sizes. I'm an 18.

My legs can’t be bare in public either! I find cotton capri pants very comfy and they let in a lot more air at the bottom so are far cooler than trousers that go all the way down. I pair this with M&S linen popover shirt - very cool and looks smart enough for work.

Another vote for the Amazon maxi dresses! I have 3 now, they’re my go-to when it’s hot. Really comfortable, lovely light cotton and yes, very flattering fit. The dark blue floral is my favourite.

Motheroffive999 · 21/06/2025 17:59

New look elasticated waist skirt or wide leg trousers and t shirt top fitted / cowl neck t shirt top from temu

I love seasalt for work, either dresses with those anti chafing shorts underneath, or black leggings and a tunic top.

I love their range of patterns and colours. And they wash well.

And from this thread I’ve just brought a chapelle dress.
