What do you wear to work if you are fat, fifty and fookin boiling hot?

I'm eyeing up my wardrobe, wondering what the hell to wear to work in the next couple of days when I have visitors at work.

It's not a suit environment so casual is ok but I would like to look cool and not a sweaty and uncomfortable blob.

Maxi dresses all seem either too strappy or frilly and flouncy.

I do trainers and DMS, so I'm not particularly a dressy person. Bit alternative perhaps. I like a lot of black or monochrome. I don't mind some bright colours. I don't do patterns and fussy stuff.

Style and beauty is not my usual stomping ground!

Hello, thought I’d reply as even know I have no idea about style, I am 50 and fat, and have found a few websites with clothes I feel reasonably well dressed and comfortable in when it’s hot

Room Lytham does some nice wide leg trousers which are cool and floaty, they come in different colours

Cath Wide Leg Trousers | Ikat | Black

Features: One size: fits up to a UK size 22  30% Polyester, 62% Viscose, 8% Elastic Inside leg: approx. 28" Model height: 5'4" Made in Italy

Do you like full length skirts OP.? You could wear a cool top and not need tights.

thearchers · 18/06/2025 21:26

Also randomly found this dress on Amazon, it’s surprisingly flattering on and very cool, comes in different colours. I have to wear chub rub shorts underneath though

Some beautiful clothes from Poetry. Not fast fashion. You can find it on Vinted too.

Needlenardlenoo · 18/06/2025 21:34

I work in a hot sweaty school. Chapelle dresses from Seasalt are my go-to.

pinkdragonfruitlatte · 18/06/2025 21:36

I like the new Lyra maxi dresses from Lady V. Really comfy and not flouncy or strappy plus they have dark colours including black with no patterns and they stock up to a size 32.

I’d add some chub rubs from Snag or Better Tights too for comfort.

Uniqlo - sizing can be a bit strange but they have some beautiful linen stuff

MaryTheTurtle · 18/06/2025 22:01

A dress with shorts and plenty of deodorant - me to a sweaty T

ThinWomansBrain · 18/06/2025 22:05

Dresses - I have several calf length V necked T Shirt style dresses - several years old because there's usually only a few weeks of the year when they get worn.
I definitely don't wear tights with them!

This year I purchased a beautiful flared dress from uniqlo, a full skirt that flares from just above the waist, very flattering, Fabric is a stretchy cotton feel.
Mine is a light French navy, but I there's a variety.

EBearhug · 18/06/2025 22:08

I've been in tailored shorts* and a short-sleeved top today, but shorts might not work everywhere.

Tomorrow will be a navy linen dress.

*BTW Mrs J at at school who said I couldn't wear shorts to school in the 6th form even in the school colours, because it wouldn't be suitable in an office: I do wear shorts to the office, and they're perfectly acceptable.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 18/06/2025 22:09

Thanks everyone. Keep it coming.

I've looked at all links but none are me.

Also, can't be having polyester so some dresses I like and then they're sweaty fabric. No good.

Poetry stuff was probably most possible but pricey. Ralph Lauren... Way out of my league. Forgot MN are well off! 😁

I think I kind of hate my legs now. I think even five years ago, I would have worn a knee length or shorter dress but now I feel a bit exposed. That Boden one is nice but I wouldn't wear it to work. I can't have near legs at work I don't think. Too pasty and chubby now.

I like the idea of floaty maxi dresses BUT they seem to have those bottom flouncy bits which just annoy me.

I'm a nightmare. Maybe I need transporting to the seventies for a kaftan 🙈 or just stay away from people until winter.

I will look at Uniqlo but I think I have given up before becoming I do not understand their sizes. I'm an 18.

I fear I would resemble Miss Tiggiwinkle 😫

I've worn poetry linen tapered trousers with a plain m and s t-shirt.
Beige trousers and white t with beige trainers today.
Tomorrow navy trousers and navy t with thin red belt and red Converse

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 18/06/2025 22:14

Toast cotton dresses from ebay or Vinted. I have a range that come out for a few weeks each year. Long, roomy and cut well at the sleeves, so no bra strap showing.

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 18/06/2025 22:19

Seasalt dresses and chub rub shorts or cropped leggings.

Professional enough for work, and comfortable.

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 18/06/2025 22:19

(I get mine from vinted)

CarefulN0w · 18/06/2025 22:20

Today I wore a white maxi skirt with a green sleeveless top (green is one my colours). Been in an all day meeting without AC and survived.

Tomorrow I’m wearing a linen top - sleeveless again with cropped trousers.

Friday, I’m thinking a linen button up dress that I bought in Monsoon about a million years ago. The good thing about your fifties is that you can wear what suits you instead of high fashion and buy things that last. I buy at least one linen outfit every summer and a cashmere jumper every winter.

BarbaraVineFan · 18/06/2025 22:20

Have you tried Popsy OP? Or is that not your style? I get lots of dresses from there and many compliments. I’m a size 18

IswearIneverhadagun · 18/06/2025 22:27

One of these?

www2.hm.com/en_gb/ladies/shop-by-product/dresses/long-sleeve.html

I'm keeping it plain and hopefully cool enough tomorrow with a black tunic from H&M, black trousers and some sandals.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/06/2025 22:28

I have this dress from Lintico which is lovely and cool but it did take weeks to arrive. They have some lovely stuff on the site.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 18/06/2025 22:29

Don’t strike me down… BUT… SHEIN. It’s cheap, tonnes of different dresses, all in one or co ords, washes lovely, smart or casual.

honestly found some nice work stuff and I’m 50, fat, perimeno, sweaty and overstimulated by faff, frills, too short, too low chest wise, exposing my arms or legs kind of clothing.
