What do you wear to work if you are fat, fifty and fookin boiling hot?

I'm eyeing up my wardrobe, wondering what the hell to wear to work in the next couple of days when I have visitors at work.

It's not a suit environment so casual is ok but I would like to look cool and not a sweaty and uncomfortable blob.

Maxi dresses all seem either too strappy or frilly and flouncy.

I do trainers and DMS, so I'm not particularly a dressy person. Bit alternative perhaps. I like a lot of black or monochrome. I don't mind some bright colours. I don't do patterns and fussy stuff.

Style and beauty is not my usual stomping ground!

I bought lots of nice trousers in Next recently - wide leg, linen mix (although not sure about fabric content) and tailored. I’ve been wearing them with a t shirt tucked in and trainers and feel cool (in both senses of the word)

Namechangerage · 18/06/2025 22:32

also, if you’re on a budget, get to Vinted. Look for simple cotton dresses in interesting colours. I avoid black. Check brands such as Cos, Toast etc.

I've worn poetry linen tapered trousers with a plain m and s t-shirt.
Beige trousers and white t with beige trainers today.
Tomorrow navy trousers and navy t with thin red belt and red Converse

I'm thinking maybe it's trousers and tops for me now. I just saw a thin woman looking all cool in a lovely maxi dress today and was thinking bout dresses.

@Namechangerage THAT is actually pretty good. Thanks. More than I'd normally spend but it'd last. Not wild about the colour for me. Not bad though.

Don’t strike me down… BUT… SHEIN. It’s cheap, tonnes of different dresses, all in one or co ords, washes lovely, smart or casual.

honestly found some nice work stuff and I’m 50, fat, perimeno, sweaty and overstimulated by faff, frills, too short, too low chest wise, exposing my arms or legs kind of clothing.

Aw thanks, each to their own but it's not for me. ❤️ I worry about sweatshops! 🙈

Terribly self indulgent but I have 19 frocks in my wardrobe at the moment- it varies 😂 - that I wear all year round - with tights and cardies in winter.
My collection includes Joe Brown, Amazon, Roman, Shein and even Sainsbury’s!! If I’m buying online I always chose Viscose rather than polyester or T-shirt fabric.

Linen trousers!

And Humphries and Begg. https://www.humphriesandbegg.co.uk/products/frida-dress-in-honey-heart-red-on-blue

I am way past what is “flattering” on me now. I like to look interesting, and be comfy/cool/warm depending on the weather. Never had more compliments on my clothes! 😊

platform DMs or fisherman cage sandals shoe wise.

I’m fat and 45 so can relate!

I’ve been wearing mostly slightly cropped chinos and light shirts/boxy type blouses this week with a variety of different coloured flat pumps. I’ve been eyeing up the linen trousers in Next for if this continues but I’m concerned about the creasing.

I don’t think maxi dresses and pyjama bottom style trousers are smart enough for where I work, and I would love to wear my dresses but I hate my fat, veiny legs so am currently on the hunt for some cool tights that will help but not make me look like I have fake legs (snag and Popsy I’m looking at you 👀).

Have a look at Sugarhill Brighton - they do a variety of dress styles. I'm 5'4", size 18-20 and their midi length is right for me (normally a midi is more like a maxi!) .

The dresses are viscose, very breathable and dont really crease. They currently have a sale on too! They sound like they fit the bill!

I did get one from there a couple years ago m it's washed really badly and I think I have got fatter and older and I don't feel right in it now.

I like some bits in there and wear my dress of. At home but wouldn't wear it at work.

Marks and Spencer's tea dress. I've got 4 in differing colours/patterns, they're 100% cotton and wash/iron well. None were more than £50.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 18/06/2025 22:50

Too fat for muji. But yes, they do nice things.

Right thanks all. I'm going to rummage a bit more tomorrow. Some good ideas here. Thanks lovely s+b peeps! Stay cool 😎 🥵

Also randomly found this dress on Amazon, it’s surprisingly flattering on and very cool, comes in different colours. I have to wear chub rub shorts underneath though

I've studied these (in all the colour varieties!) but I still can't really "get" what the fabric is like. Any hints? Is it just like a beach dress or could you wear it normally?

Sieena · 18/06/2025 23:43

I have bought some cotton or linen wide legs trousers from M & S, H and M (their sizing is a bit off sometimes) I am 5 ft 10 so love if get long length trousers from anywhere. Peacocks is not somewhere I shop but a tall influencer, and a curvy lady showed some nice cotton pieces last week. They had 25% òff last week. Matalan have 20% off if you spend more £40, and a higher % if over £65. I purchased a couple of loose dressy but casual tops , which was pleasex with. Hope this helps!

Rinkali · 18/06/2025 23:53

I found the perfect slub cotton dungarees from a small boutique near me - long wide loose trousers (so no chub rub), pretty cord straps that you could put a t-shirt or tank under for work, or wear without on holiday. Minor teletubby vibes from certain angles, but worth it for the sheer comfort. Annoyingly, they closed before I could get a reserve pair.

LoafofSellotape · 19/06/2025 00:01

M and S cropped linen trousers, I live in them.

Crispynoodle · 19/06/2025 00:20

Linen is your friend

Daygloboo · 19/06/2025 00:34

A string vest and Greek sandals. No pants.

What a coincidence! I bought one of these dresses last year and liked it so much that I bought another one in a different pattern and colour. They feel so comfortable to wear and the fabric is cool to wear, not synthetic or clingy. I bought in a bigger size than normal so it is a bit loose and so comfortable in the hot weather.
