Greasy hair

jinn2025 · 17/06/2025 20:19

Hi all, not a major thing but advice would help.
my hair is thick and goes greasy so fast! I washed it Sunday morning and it looks wet through today it’s rank!
usually wash my hair twice a week or every 4 days and I’m sick to the back teeth if using dry shampoo! I should have shares in Bastiste I’ve used it for so long
Im 36 had a baby a few months back so it could be hormones? I don’t know.
Thought I’d cracked it with apple cider shampoo OGX but seems to have stopped working, can shampoo stop being effective?.

It’s defo hormones, I’m going through the exact same thing 5 months pp. PP hair loss has finally returned to pre pregnancy levels so I’m hoping that means the grease will ease off soon.

I did notice that when I got my hair cut on Saturday that it last longer than it does at home. They did scrub harder than I would so I’ve bought one of those scalp brushes to help get a better clean.

To be honest I just don’t think that you’re washing your hair enough. Twice a week isn’t much for anybody, especially someone with a naturally greasy scalp.

I have quite oily hair and wash it every other day. On day 2 I use Aveda Shampowder which is brilliant to give it a bit more life - would definitely recommend. It is much better than regular spray dry shampoos

jinn2025 · 17/06/2025 20:34

Scalp brush!! Good shout I’ll try it. Us women put up with a lot

I was told by a hairdresser that over washing it will produce more oil, not sure if this if fully true but this is that she says

I would absolutely love to find a solution too. Am late 40’s and for the last few years have struggled with greasy hair, just like I did as a teen. Also use batiste regularly. Tried all kinds of shampoos and even shampoo bars. None really make much difference at all. If anyone has found anything that works please share!

And you don’t find out these things till after you’ve got pregnant or had the baby. Then everyone is like oh yeah that’s so normal. Like why did nobody warn me my nose would be stuffed up for the whole 9 months of being pregnant?!

It’s not overwashing if your hair is clearly greasy though, OP.. Your current schedule doesn’t sound very hygienic to be honest.

Oh I’d love time for a full hair wash every other day but that ain’t happening for a while, or at least til the kiddos are a bit older

That’s an old wives’s tale that over washing your hair causes over production of oil. You’d wash your face every day so why not your hair? You cannot train your hair to not be oily-it’s your hormones and you can’t do anything about it. I have oily skin and hair and I’ve just accepted it now. I really cut down washing my hair for a full year while I was on maternity leave and it made no difference at all. I just had oily, dank hair for a year!
I use Vosene which contains salicylic acid and helps to regulate oil a bit. I always wash twice and never leave my hair to air dry. This all helps a little.

AndOnThatTree · 17/06/2025 21:02

I’m the same so post back if you find anything that works. I used to only have to wash my hair once a week but now it’s every other day or dry shampoo.. They sell the dry shampoo in poundstretcher by the way, much cheaper.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/06/2025 21:13

Agree that you’re not washing it enough. I have to wash mine every other day otherwise it would be the same. I usually wash in the evening, but if I washed it Sunday morning it would need doing again Tuesday morning. If you shower in between hair washes then the steam will make it even more greasy.

Squirrelsnut · 17/06/2025 21:16

Pantene Extra Volume shampoo is apparently a very good deep cleansing shampoo because of its ingredients. A clever YouTube person told me and it's true.

foodtoorder · 17/06/2025 21:21

A shampoo with salycilic acid in it, also a scalp detox treatment at home once per week.

FluffykinsTheFerociousFeralFelineFury · 17/06/2025 21:46

Wash your hair at least every other day, or daily if it needs it. Use conditioner sparingly and only on the ends, never on the scalp. If washing your hair is a big undertaking, change to a short easy-care style.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 17/06/2025 21:49

What colour is your hair? I am blonde and use purple shampoo every other wash to take the grease out my hair.

It's not true.
Wash your hair every day with something like Johnson's Baby shampoo. Mild, but thorough.

It’s a blonde balayage so my roots are a bit darker. I use fudge purple shampoo and I’ve even tried using a silk hair bonnet for bed

Good to use a clarifying shampoo once a week gets the scalp clean of all product build up and excess oils ! X

Presumably you're in the shower anyway, it takes less than 5 minutes to wash your hair,I think you can manage that regardless of how old the kids are. Shower when they're asleep if necessary.

Oh yeah washing the hair is no problem as it’s a 10min job it’s drying that can take near enough an hour to do, then the Tarzan hair I have to sport unless it’s straightened or curled

Ah right, I have to dry my hair too . Have you got a good hairdryer, might be worth investing in one that will dry it fast if not if budget allows. A Parlux cut my drying time in half and I have really thick hair.

SquashPenguin · 18/06/2025 09:51

The overwashing thing is bollocks. Some people just have naturally greasy hair, some don’t. I do, I tried washing my hair less (about three times a week), did this for a year and the condition of my hair got worse and worse. It was vile and had to be cut way shorter than I’d like. Never again. I wash it every day again now and it’s in far better condition.

I have naturally oily skin but no one suggests only washing your face twice a week!

Yes it's good and smells gorgeous but made my scalp itch like crazy.
