Hi all, not a major thing but advice would help.
my hair is thick and goes greasy so fast! I washed it Sunday morning and it looks wet through today it’s rank!
usually wash my hair twice a week or every 4 days and I’m sick to the back teeth if using dry shampoo! I should have shares in Bastiste I’ve used it for so long
Im 36 had a baby a few months back so it could be hormones? I don’t know.
Thought I’d cracked it with apple cider shampoo OGX but seems to have stopped working, can shampoo stop being effective?.

Yes it's good and smells gorgeous but made my scalp itch like crazy.

I use the Redkin one, love the smell and it cleans it well.

I'm 62 and have had to wash my hair every other day since my teens. There isn't a shampoo that can do anything for greasy hair. It secretly drives me nuts that my YA dd doesn't wash her hair often enough but she would give me the hurt act if I said anything to her!

My hair used to be very greasy but I started washing using head and shoulders (just the original one) and not using a lot/ any conditioner near roots. I wash every other day.

My hair has always been oily/greasy, as is my skin. I use pressed powder on my face a few times a day or I shine! I think some people are just a bit more oily. I look wistfully at all these products that are for dry skin!

I’ve used very expensive and very cheap shampoo, and everything inbetween. No difference. If needed, I use talc - lightly - on my roots rather than dry shampoo as the latter itches like crazy.

I’m in my 40s now and have accepted I need to wash my hair every other day.

Oh yeah washing the hair is no problem as it’s a 10min job it’s drying that can take near enough an hour to do, then the Tarzan hair I have to sport unless it’s straightened or curled

My hair is a faff to dry and style too, which is why I do it before bed, every other night, as I don’t have time in the morning. I can’t stand having greasy hair so I wouldn’t leave it longer.

I am nearly mid 60's and my fine hair has just gotten greasier over the years.
The skin on my face is really dry and I slather on moisturiser several times a day, so seems odd.
You name it I have tried it over the yearsand nothing really works. Recently I read an article from a hairdresser about washing your hair properly. So now I make sure I give my scalp a really good gentle scrub all over, twice as usual. It does seem to have helped as sometimes I found after hairwashing my roots could still appear a little greasy. Also trying out silicon and sulphate free shampoo.
Currently my roots need doing and as soon as they start showing my hair gets greasy even quicker. I washed my hair yesterday and today in work in the heat i could literally feel the greasiness coming out.
Off to do my roots tonight.

Sometimes washing your scalp twice can help

I do that anyway, it's never as clean if I do it once.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 18/06/2025 17:31

I have to wash my hair daily or it's the proverbial chip shop, lank and greasy. On the upside I can leave it to dry if I am not going into the office and it looks borderline ok.

Would you be better off finding hair styles you could live with so you can avoid the "Tarzan" look [bit shaggy?] Can you wear your hair up? Would a shorter hair cut for a while work?

fatgirlswims · 18/06/2025 19:35

I had to wash my hair daily. It wouldn’t last 12 hour without looking awful. Greasy, lank and horrible.

Now i can goes three days with the help of dry shampoo- due to hormonal changes think.
fine hair shampoo and non-silicone and sulphate free shampoo.
im using mane and tail and like it!
have to say I used to spend a fortune on shampoo and I do not miss that!

just need to wash it daily!

No such thing as training greasy hair. Just because a hairdressers says it doesn’t mean they are correct.

Just to blow minds, I wash my hair twice a day. I shame-faced admitted this to my trichologist and she just said “great!”

I probed and she said that it’s better for scalp health. It won’t make your hair more greasy.

I have naturally greasy hair, the biggest game changer was having this routine. Every other day I wash my hair. Once with one shampoo, and then again with another shampoo. I condition from the nape of my neck down and then rinse that out once I have washed the rest of me. I then use my GHD hairdryer which dries in about 50 times faster than anything else I have ever owned or leave it to air dry.
On the second day I use boots own brand dry shampoo and that keeps it looking good for that day. It all goes wonky the week before my period when I could fry chips on my hair by the second day but I tie it up and live with it.

This routine seems to keep my hair in great shape without stripping it. I love the aveda shampoos-the apple cider vinegar one is the best for greasy locks!

NoEffingWay · 18/06/2025 19:49

To add, when I use the shampoos I only wash my scalp, but really scrub it with my hands to get the grease out. The first does the grease, the second makes it clean. The rinse gets the shampoo down the lengths of my hair without drying them out.

To add: it also won’t dry out your hair as you only wash the roots. You need to condition whenever you shampoo though, to close the shaft.
