Hi, I am 5ft 6", size 12/14, bust 38C. Has anyone found flattering dresses that suit a 50 year old? TIA

Thank you - what size did you order @GameOfJones ?

I got the 12. There's plenty of stretch in it so I'd size down if you're in-between sizes.

I was wearing 38GG for my enormous boobs, I bit the bullet and went to a proper bra fitter and I am now 34G. I look better, my boobs look smaller and praise the Lord, my clothes look much better too.

For the first time in decades I can wear a T-shirt top without a cardigan to cover my shelf-like top. Several friends noticed and can't get over the difference.

Worth every penny of the bras I bought which were very expensive but I really liked them. Since bought cheaper bras online in my new size.

Where did you go to be measured please?

Spamham · 19/06/2025 03:27

This Next one in red or black is nice. I’d size down though.

Where did you go to be measured please?

It was an independent bra fitter in a village fairly near me.

I only knew it was there thanks to someone I know mentioning her mum had been there and got fitted properly. It never came up on google searches.

There is no Bravissimo or Rigby and Peller near me, they're the only ones I know of that do proper bra fitting.

I can't tell you how much I wish I'd done it sooner if I'd known where to go, it's been body changing for me. No more shelf under my chin! 😆

We have an excellent independent lingerie shop in my nearest market town. If you are in the Sheffield, Huddersfield or Barnsley areas it is practically life changing to get a properly fitted bra from there.

I don't think they even own a tape measure.

The lady who fitted me, said she didn't have a tape measure in the shop, she did it totally by eye, looked at me in my bra and went and picked up a couple of bras from the display. I tried on six in total and bought two. They were very expensive but the difference it made to me really justified the cost.

Firstly I bet that's not your correct bra size at that clothing size (especially if M&S "measured" you?) the right bra makes a HUGE difference to how clothes sit.

Get a fabric tape measure. Wrap it relatively tightly around your chest where a bra strap fits, snug under your boobs. That's your band measurement. Then bend your body 90° so your boobs are pointing at the floor (it's not particularly dignified but it works lol) and wrap the tape measure around the largest point, passing directly over your nipples and around your back, not too tightly but a snug fit.

See how many inches difference there are between the two measurements and this will give you your bra size.

eg. 34" back, 39" over the boobs, and each inch is an increase in one cup size. Boobs are 5 inches bigger than back, so that = E cup. A 34E bra.
Lots of tips online but the name of this method escapes me right now!

Edited

Yes I agree, I'm 5'5 and size 12 I'm 32G

@supersun23

Have a look at simply be, I've just ordered 3 dresses from there im a size 12/14 and have 36dd boob's so its a struggle. The dresses fit lovely!

happystrummer · 20/06/2025 20:56

i went to bravissimo. They measure by sight not tape measure and told me I was a 34G after wearing 38C. I didnt believe it but much much better fit, more comfortable and looks much better under my cloths. I am a 14 and occasional 12

Where is this wonderous place please?

Thinlyveiled · 21/06/2025 09:38

I’ve just done the boob or bust measurement and the bra size is completely different. Trouble is I can’t find any bras in that size. I went into bravissimo a few days ago and found it completely depressing. About three sizes in each bra, hardly any choice and the bras looked really cheap and nasty. Apathetic shop assistant .

Think it might be Rigby and Peller

ShakeNvacStevens · 21/06/2025 13:13

I had a Freya virtual bra fitting earlier this year (it's free), the lady eyeballed me and came up with the exact same size as the Boob or Bust method. Worth trying if you don't have a decent shop near you.

Yes … 38 seems unlikely. (I’m roughly a size 12, and 32 around my ribs.)

It’s a shame you haven’t given a budget, or any context, as that means you’ll get plenty of suggestions for mid range High St, but very little else. Is that what you actually want?

What? I'm a size 8 and I'm 38C? I've been a 36C min when I was about 17-18, even 36A as a young teen, but no less than 36, maybe a 34 once or twice when very young.

People come in different body shapes. I'm an hourglass shape so usually clothes are baggy for me round the waist, and often I need to size up if a design is tight around the chest. A lot of my clothes are tight around the chest to the point of barely zipping, and hanging down loose, so I stick with particular labels that fit my shape, or have them taken in. Love a belt for the same reasons.

Used to be a swimmer and currently lift heavy weights in the gym, so just got a big back/ wide ribcage that sticks out, not much I can do to go below 38, and tight bra bands squeeing the skin ain't pretty.

I agree - I have a short torso and bra bands sit on my ribs (which is why I’ve given up on wired bras). Even at size 10 I was still a 34. Interestingly my cup size has gone up as I’ve put on weight, but band size hasn’t.

I think it's similar how some people have larger hips for example... Not everyone falls into standard sizing. I was surprised to hear 32G etc was a common size for this clothing size though, I've always thought that everyone at size 8/10 and over must be at least 36/38 and wondered how many people bought the 32s... And when I think of anything larger than C-cup, I think of Pamela Anderson!

I get told I have large boobs and I'm MAX C-cup.

The thread has piqued my curiosity though. Might book in for a bra fitting, what if I have been wrong all my life? (Measuring tables still suggest 38C though)

Feel a bit bad about no advice for the OP! Why don't you check out some belted dresses from Hobbs? I've often asked women where they're gorgeous dress is from and they say Hobbs, seems to really flatter the figure.
