Do stylish waterproof winter coats exist?

Loulabelle1234 · 11/06/2025 08:02

I know the weather has just started getting better but I have a birthday coming up and I really need a winter coat. I have 2 warm winter dog walking coats but they're awful (but practical) I want a waterproof winter coat with a hood that I can wear on days or evenings out and not look like a tramp. I live in the North East and our weather can be awful in the winter. I keep looking but I can't find anything! My budget would be £200.00 max. I like grey, black navy, khaki or dark brown. I would really appreciate your recommendations otherwise I'll end up using my dog walking coats again.

Trespass Audrina. It's everything you want. It comes in a few colours. Ive got the navy blue and it's gorgeous

I have this trench coat from next and I’ve wore it in the heaviest of rains and keeps me completely dry https://www.next.co.uk/style/su410909/av1049?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22010976905&gbraid=0AAAAADm_5UWn7lZ_OCyriIw7xhwxfS9GD#AV1049

Oh no it’s not this exact one as mine has a hood but I only bought it at the end of last year so they should still sell it, it was only £90 and I got it tailored as I’m short

I've got coats from Finesterre - longish waxed jacket style Parka.
And a long line puffa coat from Passenger.
Rohan is also worth a look as occasionally they have a 'city style' long waterproof/mac.

Trench coats can look stylish and quite posh.

Can I ask people who have coats from Rainsisters. Do you actually wear them with normal trousers? They look stunning in the pictures but I noted that most models wear them with dresses. I'm just not very glamorous in my daily life 😂therefore wondering how such a coat would fit in... I really do love the look of them...

Yes, I wear mine with jeans or trousers most of the time. If you look at reviews on their website there’s usually photos of customers wearing them with trousers too. They are every bit as nice with jeans/trousers as they are with dresses.

englishandelegant · 12/06/2025 10:38

@MuthaHubbardI find mine warm enough, maybe less so in proper minus conditions but I’m in Scotland so when it gets cold it’s gets very cold. I find it warm enough in most weathers though, just not below freezing days.

Etage. Danish brand. TK Maxx.

I forgot to include a link sorry. But I’d say they fit your holy grail criteria pretty well.

Well now I have spent £173 on a new coat 😂😂😂

Twilightstarbright · 12/06/2025 12:22

Another rainsisters recommendation- I adore mine (beige with the big bow). I get stopped in the City asking where it’s from.

I also have a sweaty Betty nimbus which is waterproof and very warm for minus 0 watching football (PL and DC) but it’s not stylish.

Sorry if I enabled you but also delighted for you! Which one have you ordered?

I happened upon a knee-length Craghoppers cost in a charity shop, and have worn it for two winters! Warm, hood, waterproof and it's not too 'outdoorsy' so goes with most clothes.

It's a bit like this, which happens to be on a massive discount!

I’m a RainSisters convert. I resisted getting one for ages then picked one up in their sale in November last year. Wore it almost daily until April and have started wearing it again the past few weeks since it’s been torrential rain again here. I’ve even bought a second one as there’s a sale on again at the moment. Honestly they are great in west coast of Scotland rain so well worth it in my opinion. They state they’re not fully waterproof but I have remained dry in the heaviest rain every time I’ve worn them- even when out all day in the rain!

I've had my eye on Rainsisters for a while. How do you find the sizing? I particularly like this one..

Fit and Flare Coat with A-Line Skirt in White | 'Charming Rose' – RainSisters

Fit and Flare Coat with A-Line Skirt in White | 'Charming Rose'

This coat is a blooming masterpiece, capturing the beauty of a rose garden. With green leaves and red roses, it brings a fresh, romantic charm to every step.

@Tarragon123that is such a pretty design. I find the sizing pretty accurate- I’m a size 10 and wear small or medium depending if I want to be able to wear a sweater underneath. I’m short so order the petite sizing too which works well for me. There’s a Facebook group for RainSisters Pre-Loved Coats where loads of customers share their measurements and what size works for them if that would help too.

ABH100 · 12/06/2025 18:23

I have an Ilse Jacobsen rain coat. It’s so flattering on, maybe it’s not warm enough for middle of winter but they have a whole range and I feel like a put together Scandinavian lady when I wear it 😅

Sandunesandseashells · 12/06/2025 18:38

Another fan of Rainsisters, I have this one and love it. I’m a 16 and bought XL. I get compliments every time I wear it. They are beautifully finished and lined which adds warmth. The photos don’t show the inside but it’s a soft pink satin.

Such a beautiful coat! I hope you love it!

CaveMum · 12/06/2025 19:48

Another RainSisters fan here. I bought the one linked to by @englishandelegant, but with the emerald lining last year and have just bought the spring season light grey trench - which arrived today!

https://rainsisters.com/products/double-breasted-trench-coat-for-spring-in-grey-graceful-grey

Whenever I’ve worn the black one I’ve had loads of compliments. I wear mine with dresses but I live in dresses most of the time anyway. I’m now looking forward to it raining again so I can give the grey one a whirl!

Sizing wise I am a 10, perhaps creeping towards a 12 and have them in medium. When I originally ordered I got the small but it was a tad too snug around the waist. Their returns process was really easy and they actually sent the new one as soon I provided proof I had sent the small one back.

Double Breasted Trench Coat for Spring in Grey | 'Graceful Grey'

This trench coat comes in a soft light grey color, with a lovely light mint green lining. It is double-breasted and is made from light shell material, offering style and comfort. Wrap yourself in this coat and feel the vintage-inspired style it adds to...

I love rainsisters coats and finally took the plunge and bought one, but unfortunately they don't love me so I had to send it back 😢
The material is lovely and they are so stylish I just needed to be taller and a bit thinner

englishandelegant · 12/06/2025 21:14

@Flamingmentalcats that’s a shame it didn’t work for you. I order the petite every time as I’m definitely not tall either but if you’re particularly petite (4’10 or under) I can understand they’d probably be too long even in petite.
