Do stylish waterproof winter coats exist?

Loulabelle1234 · 11/06/2025 08:02

I know the weather has just started getting better but I have a birthday coming up and I really need a winter coat. I have 2 warm winter dog walking coats but they're awful (but practical) I want a waterproof winter coat with a hood that I can wear on days or evenings out and not look like a tramp. I live in the North East and our weather can be awful in the winter. I keep looking but I can't find anything! My budget would be £200.00 max. I like grey, black navy, khaki or dark brown. I would really appreciate your recommendations otherwise I'll end up using my dog walking coats again.

I got mine from Protected Species after a recommendation on MN. It's waterproof and windproof and really stylish, but it isn't warm. But it's big enough to wear my Primark fluffy jacket underneath on cold days without feeling bulky. I'm happy with it and I get loads of compliments.

Another RainSisters fan here. I bought the one linked to by @englishandelegant, but with the emerald lining last year and have just bought the spring season light grey trench - which arrived today!

https://rainsisters.com/products/double-breasted-trench-coat-for-spring-in-grey-graceful-grey

Whenever I’ve worn the black one I’ve had loads of compliments. I wear mine with dresses but I live in dresses most of the time anyway. I’m now looking forward to it raining again so I can give the grey one a whirl!

Sizing wise I am a 10, perhaps creeping towards a 12 and have them in medium. When I originally ordered I got the small but it was a tad too snug around the waist. Their returns process was really easy and they actually sent the new one as soon I provided proof I had sent the small one back.

I love these coats and am tempted, but if you are in the UK, did you have to pay any import taxes?

No important taxes. Delivery is quite expensive at £18 but it is couriered by DHL and arrived from Latvia 6 days after ordering.

@PandoraSocksno import taxes and delivery is free if you spend over 200Euros (not sure exactly what that’s equal to in UK£) I’m wearing one of mine today. It hasn’t stopped raining and I’ve been walking about in it for the past 2.5 hours, still completely dry under it.

I love those Rainsisters coats and often look at the website but having now seen some of the pictures in the reviews of people wearing them with bog standard jumper, jeans and trainers, they dont look so good. And this is how I would be wearing them, I'd love to look like a 50s housewife but I dont, Im lumpy and bumpy and my clothes are frumpy

Actually I genuinely didnt mean for that to rhyme. But there you are.

NotMeekNotObedient · 14/06/2025 15:40

I've got this Helly Hansen insulated Wesley trench. I've got quite a few compliments on it. Really warm, properly waterproof and windproof.

Suggest you have a look at Frasers online. They have several brands on there. Eg https://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/barbour-international/longline-kyra-waterproof-jacket-678446#colcode=67844669

Hannahthepink · 14/06/2025 16:55

Ooh, I have this one! I have had lots of admiration for it so far.

Trovindia · 14/06/2025 17:03

I have this in dark green, I bought it after seeing a woman wearing it in a different colour and asking her where it was from as it's so nice. It has really lovely details and looks gorgeous, plus it's warm and waterproof with a big hood. Looks like they might only have it in stone now but worth looking for other colours.

I have a barbour which I love. It’s knee length, padded (not quilted), waterproof and has a hood but not bulky.

I forgot to include a link sorry. But I’d say they fit your holy grail criteria pretty well.

Literally the first one I’ve seen that fits the bill! Not a puffa, waterproof, very stylish, hood

Another fan of Rainsisters, I have this one and love it. I’m a 16 and bought XL. I get compliments every time I wear it. They are beautifully finished and lined which adds warmth. The photos don’t show the inside but it’s a soft pink satin.

Beautiful

My protected species coat is completely not waterproof, it's like wearing a jumper, I get soaked.

I've now got a Rains copy from Sainsbury's which is fab

I really wish I hadn't clicked that link, new coat on the way! It definitely hits the holy grail criteria for me 😍

Quirkswork · 15/06/2025 21:23

I like Musto jackets (as worn and advertised by Zara Philips). There are loads of really good ones in the sale now within budget. They are really hard wearing, stylish and functional which I know is a bad word, but actually it's useful to have a functional coat in a Northumbrian hooley with pouring rain.

englishandelegant · 15/06/2025 21:34

@TrtseHkprhaha sorry! Which one did you go for? I love a rainy day now so I can wear my coat 😄

I've ordered the raven red one from the link, although I could happily have bought 5 or 6! Can't wait to try it on, but I've probably guaranteed we'll have a 3 month heatwave Grin

echt · 16/06/2025 06:21

I like Protected Species, though you do have to re-proof each year. I use Grangers.

Bizarrely there isn't an internal pocket for a phone. Or not in the ones I have.

rockstarshoes · 16/06/2025 08:10

I know this isn’t what you asked but I sort of gave up on the hood element & bought myself a proper rain hat! Almost like a sowester, longer at the back!
I was so sick of trying to carry a bag, laptop bag, umbrella I wanted something practical.
Glamorous it is not but it keeps me dry!

englishandelegant · 16/06/2025 10:27

@TrtseHkprthat is a beautiful coat. I know how you feel. I have so many on my wish list!

Ah interesting. How do you re-proof yours?

echt · 21/06/2025 23:57

Grangers now do a re-proofing version all in one that wash and wear, the other you spray it. Proteted Species recommend Grangers.

It arrived on Friday, wasn't due until tomorrow, and is absolutely beautiful. Much too hot to wear it now, but I've spent far too much time in front of the mirror swishing about in it 😅
