Beach/Pool cover ups

I need help, we have an AI beach holiday every year and I always feel like I miss the mark with my pool cover up and I don't know why. What can I take that I can pop over my bikini to go for lunch etc, that looks swish and stylish. I always feel like I'm a mess compared to others

There are lots of pretty beach dresses around like this . Or something like this with a vest top. Or an oversized shirt looks nice too this

The trick is to go for simple block colours - nothing too patterned or loud. Choose colours that suit your skin tone.

Tiptopteapot · 10/06/2025 18:00

Oh I love a beach coverup
ive Just ordered this: https://www.freepeople.com/uk/shop/mirage-convertible-tunic? and find FP good for nice beachy clothes albeit a bit expensive
also.
M&S do these great cotton very slightly sheer long line shirts that are long enough to wear as a dress over a bikini and look really simple and elegant. I also have a patterned shorts and shirt set from M&S.
I sort of agree with the block colour point above, but patterns hide wet patches if you sit down in a damp bikini

😱 surely you change into dry swimwear before going to lunch?

ThreeRows · 10/06/2025 18:51

Last summer the trend was an oversized white linen shirt. Very cool looking ( on everyone else!).

Why would you? It dries in the sun.

Disagree about pattern and colour as a big Missoni fan. What sort of size and shape are you OP? I love a simple linen or cotton shirt, too. Or something Marante-esque with that French boho hippie feel. I think where people go wrong is cheap fabric mainly, or very fussy styles

Yorkshiremum80 · 10/06/2025 19:45

Some great suggestions thank you. @Wiltingasparagusfern I am a size 14 hourglass so big boobs, bum and chunky legs with a small waist. I think this is where I've gone wrong over the years, I've bought cheap and not felt comfortable. I want something that I will look pulled together and glam in. I'm a 45 year old Mum so that could be wishful thinking.🤣

H & M have great all cotton dresses at the moment. Have a look. There is a knee length broderie dress in white, black, red and a kind of deep lilac that is very pretty. If that’s not your bag, they also have blue and white cotton shirt and shirt type dresses. Really ‘good’ looking.

I’m not a nylon-y type kaftan fan. I’d choose an all cotton long shirt or tunic or even sundress.

I bet it isn’t wishful thinking! I don’t think it needs to be expensive, just natural fabric. I am a bit of a fan of the French brand Lara Ethnics for stuff like this. Their stuff is often on sale on the chicer Greek islands. With your hourglass figure an oversized shirt might make you look a bit blocky (though I think they look great on women with that shape tbh.) A style like this would really emphasise your waist if it’s your style? Lara Ethnics beach dress

They also have a lovely striped oversized shirt

I’m a similar shape and suffer with the dreaded chub rub too. I like a pair of crochet type black trousers and a white shirt tied at the waist.

Queenofheart · 11/06/2025 13:53

Have a look on vinted, it's great for this kind of thing right now, I've had loads off there

Look at Tesco f and f https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/shop/clothing-and-accessories/women/dresses

Some great suggestions thank you. I'm now spoilt for choice, I do love the bright pink Asda shirt @MissyB1

I am guessing it's ok because they are cotton but do you not feel hot with the long sleeves?

I roll them up!

BeaLola · 11/06/2025 20:53

I either wear an oversized white shirt or a H&M bandeau top cotton dress - they do loads (not that I'm particularly stylish)

Shufflebumnessie · 11/06/2025 21:25

I've always felt like I've missed the mark when it comes to a cover up. However, last year I bought a long, white, button up textured shirt in 100% cotton and for the first time in my life I actually felt stylish around the pool. I paired it with a silver slip on sandals and a neutral pool bag (both bargains in the Monsoon or Accessorize sale, can't remember which).

AnSionnachGlic · 11/06/2025 21:36

Im a similar shape to you, op. Size 14, hourglass with chunky legs! I love the idea of an oversized linen shirt but it does not suit me....it emphasises my legs and skims over my best bits; chest and waist! I find a one piece, fitted , maxi, jersey vest type dress suits best or a long kaftan with plunging neckline. I can't find any examples to show but Monsoon often have some suitable pieces.

One of my favorite holidays was spent by a pool with a cafe serving Italian food. You’d swim for a bit, dry off in the sun, then retreat to the shade of lemon trees waiting for lunch.

So, no.
