Is this dress ok for black tie wedding?

I’ve been invited to a wedding in a few weeks, it’s through DH as it’s his friends really. I bought this dress and have worn it to another wedding. It was expensive so I thought I could wear it to both.

Now DH has told me there is a black tie dress code, the men are to wear tuxedos and no suits. Is it going to be too casual? I thought it may still be ok with dressy heels?

Im pregnant and it’s comfortable too, I really didn’t want to have to shell out on another outfit that I probably won’t wear again!

I think it's a lovely dress for a wedding BUT it's not 'black-tie'.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 08/06/2025 13:38

I really think you should be allowed a pass with being pregnant.
The dress is lovely.

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 13:39

Do you think I could get away with it at all? I REALLY don’t want to spend more money on this wedding than is essential. This same couple came to our wedding a few years ago, didn’t even bring a card and had a huge and noticeable row during the first dance!

Lovely dress but not black tie. You will stand out and possibly feel uncomfortable.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 08/06/2025 13:40

No it’s not black tie, it’s far too casual. I would look at someone wearing that and think they didn’t understand dress codes

get something appropriate off Vinted or eBay and don’t spend lots

Longhotsummers · 08/06/2025 13:40

In the light of your update, check Vinted to save £££.

GretaGreen · 08/06/2025 13:41

It's a very casual dress in my opinion. I definitely wouldn't wear it to black tie pregnant or not.

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 13:41

I would normally use vinted but find it tricky being pregnant knowing what size/shape I need. I hate weddings where the couple stipulate a dress code!

It looks more like a lovely dress for a garden party or daytime church wedding to me. If men must wear tuxes I don’t think this quite cuts it. It’s mostly to do with the print and colours, though I suspect (hard to judge from
photo) the fabric also doesn’t suit black-tie. If I absolutely had to get away with it I’d make sure I wore my hair in a very romantic/formal updo chignon thing, had dangly earrings, a stronger lipstick or smokey eyes, heeled shoes, and draped a silky shawl (match the pink-red of dress) over the top half and my shoulders. At that point, it would be cheaper to rent a dress, though.

If you’re particularly brave… what would happen - you’d not get booted out, would you?

I am honestly not sure!! I think this couple are very ‘keeping up appearances’ so maybe! I think I would be excluded from the photos.

It's not black tie but as you are pregnant, I think it doesn't matter and others will give you some grace. It's still a nice dress...it's not like you'll be rocking up in a tracksuit.

Oh well, fuck ‘em then.

Wear your lovely dress, stick your hair up, and clutch your bump while waddling from side to side in sensible shoes.

Tuxedos are ridiculous for a wedding btw. Very ‘try too hard’.

I’m in a mood.

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 13:50

I know you’ll be wondering why I’m going, but it’s important for DH to go as he’ll be seeing friends there that he hasn’t seen for ages, so I am sucking it up for him (he thinks they’re dicks as well).

Unfortunately you'll stick put like a sore thumb, it's definitely not a black tie dress.

AlwaysFreezing · 08/06/2025 13:52

It's perfect given that you're pregnant.

Hercisback1 · 08/06/2025 13:53

How pregnant?

Definite bump you can get away with it.

Don't attempt heels all day though!

DissDissOrDiss · 08/06/2025 13:56

Absolutely not a ‘black tie’ dress.

VeryStressedMum · 08/06/2025 13:57

It's not black tie and if your dh is wearing a tux then you will probably look too casual next to him.

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 13:57

I’ll be 24 weeks at the wedding but it’s not my first baby and I’m already showing at 16 weeks.

If this dress isn’t appropriate, what does constitute appropriate?

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 14:01

The invite says (paraphrased without being too outing!)… the kind of black tie for outdoor garden celebrations, women should wear long or midi dresses in formal fabrics which could be light or rich colours or patterned.

OP posts:
DissDissOrDiss · 08/06/2025 14:03

It means evening dresses / full glam. Bloody prescriptive dress code though!

Idoidoidoidoidoido · 08/06/2025 14:05

It has a list of colours to avoid which are mainly variations on white, so obvious. And says to also avoid ‘heavy satins’, whatever that is. Also says heels can be worn (!) but would prefer block heels.

They’re insane. HTH.

BCBird · 08/06/2025 14:06

Blooming heck, that's a bit prescriptive telling u about fabrics😬 like the dress OP. Where is it from? Not black tie- stuff em.

BCBird · 08/06/2025 14:07

Is the mention of heels because of damaging flooring or because you are going to be on the grass?
