Cool, lightweight, sleeveless cotton dress for holiday to Crete

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I've just booked a holiday in Crete (going in 2 weeks!) and I'm frantically looking for a really lightweight sleeveless summer dress. I've checked the temperatures and it looks like it's going to be about 30°... Most of the dresses I've got are going to be a bit hot, I think 🤔

I'm a size 12/14, 5'7" early 50s. I don't want anything too short (prefer midi/maxi).

I've got this vision of wafting around in a cool floaty 100% cotton dress, but everything I've seen seems to be polyester, too heavy/lined, or massively puffy/ballooning sleeves etc. (I'd like sleeveless but maybe not spaghetti straps).

Any thoughts? Budget around £50, could go higher. Colours - blue, pink, white, aqua, sage green... possibly black or red. Would consider a pattern but generally prefer plain.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Ok, hear me out - Primark. Cotton maxi black or white

Look at The Edit collection in Primark. They have another modal/polyester dark navy with a beige stripe and pockets!

These look very nice - just wondering if it's possible to wear a bra with them... have you seen them in real life?

There's also a sleeveless cotton poplin Khaki sleeveless dress and a poplin skirt that could pass for COS.

Edited

A bit short for me and not really "floaty" - thank you for having a look though.

Have a look at Cos. This one is lovely but over budget! Green dress

Very nice but too expensive for what I want, I think. Thank you anyway.

Just caught up with thread - bra can be worn with it wider straps

Thank you. I went to Asda today and I was a bit disappointed with the quality... I didn't see this one though so might be worth another look.

i think one of the best places for holiday wear is markets / boutiques in the place you are staying. My favourite hot weather dress came from Portugal a few years back.

I recently bought this dress. It's really comfortable in the heat, although I've only worn it at 25°C

I prefer something a bit more fitted than that, but I went on their website and found a couple of other dresses which I really like, so thank you!

Good point, but I'd be happier to have something sorted before I go

Have a look at Roman, I’ve got a few of their 100% cotton dress and they are cool and floaty. I also don’t do short. Some of their stuff can be a bit frumpy but there’s also some great finds.

Thank you - I've just seen a white one on their site which looks good, so I might give it a try

I’ve posted this before but this is the loveliest lightest summer dress I have - unfortunately this years colours aren’t for me though.

Sorry just seen your budget, ignore me.

I bought my last cotton dress from Mountain Warehouse for under £20. Worth a look....

Massimo Dutti is usually good for this sort of thing, lots of their stuff on Vinted.

Thank you - it's a bit more than I want to pay but I'll have a look on Vinted 🤞

Hadn't thought of Massimo Dutti - I'll look on Vinted (literally spent the whole day on there!!)

I'm going to Crete in a month and was there last year - it's so lovely. Have you looked at Nobody's Child? This is not very 'wafty' so may not suit...

This looks really lovely, but I guess I'm looking for something a bit more casual and lightweight... what do you normally wear out there? Maybe I'm over thinking the effects of the heat?!

measureofmydreams · 09/06/2025 10:49

The days were hot!! But in the evenings it did cool down a little and so I wasn't uncomfortable. I wore long dresses, a couple had loose sleeves and I was ok. How about this - it's bit more casual?

@Arrivederla just want to say that I'm going to copy your graceful responses to suggestions that aren't quite right .
I'm never sure how to phrase without sounding ungrateful.
