If you were going to buy another pair of retro coloured trainers

I mean ffs.

i am a 90s indie kid and I have never really stopped wearing suede pumas/Adidas gazelles. Or knock offs variants thereof - in no way adverse to a supermarket dupe. So obviously v happy there are loads of options around atm.

I wore some dark green/yellow M&S knock offs most of the autumn/winter but these are now really tatty and relegated to garden trainers. I have some beige gazelles which do well for work and some white leather rally trainers too so pale end of the spectrum is covered.

i have some pink vans but they are quite wide in shape and I never reach for them because I think they look a bit weird (sale bargain, loved the colour so though they’d be ok).. I also have some minty campus which I love but don’t go with loads of my clothes, only really jeans.

so I think I’m in the market for another pair but I can’t decide what. Ideally a pair that will do a lot of heavy lifting through til boot season and become my default. I wear a lot of blue but I want something a bit punchier than a navy/navy and white combo. More a royal blue as a base colour perhaps.

or pink. Or green but not the dark green I had last year.

i did see some nice new balances but I think they come up narrow and I have hobbit feet, hence why adidas work well. I can wear junior sizes too as am a 5 or 5.5.

ideas?

I liked some royal blue with pink stripes gazelles I saw. I'm eyeing them up

anon2022anon · 07/06/2025 09:43

I wear red or leopard print more than anything. Mid blue/ teal have barely been worn

myladyjane · 07/06/2025 09:55

Oh you tease! Not in stock in my size but I could look elsewhere.

@anon2022anon interesting. I did think of red actually but it’s not a colour i wear much of/have much in my wardrobe that goes but it is punchy. Leopard - now we are very much talking. Although most of my trousers for work are navy - does it go sufficiently?

Any good?

https://communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-shoes

Or

https://www.normanwalshuk.com/

The former have their trainers made by the latter. Both British heritage brands.

New Balance 574s are great for wide feet and very comfy. Some of the more interesting colours need to be purchased from the smaller shops. Or the T500s are really nice- they are slightly more narrow but still have a wide toe box. I find them having wide feet wipes out about 70% of all trainer options for me unfortunately.

I'm a 90s indie kid too, can't be doing with massive chunky trainers either.

I don't know if they ship to the UK, but I've got a few pairs of trainers from Natural World Eco: https://www.naturalworldeco-shop.com/pt/mulher/sapatilhas-mulher.html

Made in Spain, and come in loads of colours. The natural rubber soles smell deliciously of bubble gum for some reason.

I've got a suede pair which I wear without laces (they have a hidden elastic panel), and a couple of Bensimon-style cotton plimsoll ones.

I’m a huge Walsh fan/addict but just be aware that 2 of the Walsh lines (the Alta and the Ensign) are now made in China. The rest of their trainers are still handmade in Bolton though.

Yes to New Balance 574s, I have wide toe box and love them

navy with red bits

You can often find older colourways in the sale too

Those are gorgeous. Nearly purchased them a while back.

You are a bunch of evil enablers. And I’m here for it. There is a blue pair on the community clothing site that I am liking a lot (plus they have a sweatshirt I’m eyeing up so that would save on posting). How do they come up width wise?

am also going to get googling on the New Balances. Although am also now considering the leopard sambas.

thank you so much everyone

How do you find these size-wise?

I've tried on so many pairs of trainers recently, all size 5 and some of them I can barely get my feet into - I've been a size 5 my whole life!

Others the size 5 fit fine so I think it depends on style.

I'm a 41 / 41.5 depending on the brand. Size 7.5 or 8 in UK sizes. I find the 41 fits fine, but I have short toes. I have high arches so I sometimes find shoes a bit tight in the width, but not with this brand.

I have narrow feet but high arches so that might be my problem.

These are lovely, I think I'll try them. Thank you!

I love a colourful retro trainer, my latest pair are lilac and mint Puma ones which are so comfortable and some pink Adidas Nizza platform ones.

whattodoes · 07/06/2025 11:05

leopard sambas

pink gazelles - wear mine much more than I thought I would

silver?

evilharpy · 07/06/2025 11:12

I love my leopard SL72s, they go with almost everything.

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 07/06/2025 11:15

I am dreaming of the leopard sambas.
I also have the burgundy court bold (kids so they were only £45!!!) and they have gone with loads.

Oldraver · 07/06/2025 12:21

I have some navy blue Gazelle Liberty print trainers. There are a few more colourways, and styles if you can get into child size

LemonadeSunshine · 07/06/2025 12:39

New Balance have different widths across most of their ranges. On the under tongue label, it's usually in the top left corner, with B their standard width, D a bit wider, then E and 2E if you have boats like my feet!

minipie · 07/06/2025 13:19

That makes sense. Just checked and my 574s say D and 550s say B - and yes the 550s feel a fair bit narrower on.

I got a bit fed up with new balance suede going off colour and my Gazelles felt like I was wearing bowling shoes (they probably didn’t but the shape made me self conscious, and they weren’t very cushioned for walking) I brought these from New look, really comfy and they give jeans and plain clothes a pop of colour.

AlertCat · 07/06/2025 14:22

Sainsburys had a decent leopard trainer back in January- I got them and they’re really comfortable.
My sis has been wearing the pink gazelles with red stripes and green laces, they’d look great with navy and give a proper pop of colour.

henlake7 · 07/06/2025 15:33

I just live in Converse all summer. Hoping to treat myself to a couple of new colours this year.
(plus I love that they are never really in or out of fashion, they are just always kinda.... 'there').😀
