I could not choose any knickers…

Going away for 10 day, I do not have enough, went to M&S. Plenty to choose from but I got completely overwhelmed. Two types of shorts, high or low, full brief, Brazilian, thongs, mini, midi, high leg, three packs, five packs, 5 for £12, plain, patterned, lace. Then saw period pants, shapewear, posh satin stuff. I could not choose after making decisions all damn day, at work, at home. I am size 8 in their trousers, but it looked like I would need at least a 10 holding them against my width. May be outsourcing the job to DH, I am sure he will enjoy online research to prepare for the trip.

But seriously, how many types of pants do we need as a humankind? And why do they have a sizing world of their own, don’t we do vanity sizing for knickers?

I would go for a 10 in your case but I hate tight knickers.

Which style do you like or normally wear?
Also, the type of holiday and your clothes can also determine style/fabric

CeRaVie · 06/06/2025 07:47

@Tumblingthrough I wear thongs mainly but need a comfort of a bigger gusset now. But I am sure which styles will get chewed up by the bottom if that makes sense. Things are designed for that and comfortable in the correct size, but I am not sure if there is going to be bulk of fabric with other cuts heading where it should not. And VPL if elastic is even a little grippy. Cotton or modal.

Haha I feel your pain. If I wear underwear I exclusively wear just plain black thongs. I’m not fussed about all the cuts or styles. Just a plain black thong sorts me!

StarlightLady · 06/06/2025 10:45

I mainly have Brazilians or thongs, as both suit my shape and stop put, providing they have some stretch. For me, stretch lace works best. I go for my dress size for the Brazilians and go one size up for the thongs.

CommonAsMucklowe · 06/06/2025 19:17

Black full briefs from M&S. Nothing else!

caramac04 · 06/06/2025 19:28

I couldn’t find any midi briefs at M&S a couple of weeks ago. I have a saggy tummy and no arse so thongs are out as I need tummy coverage.
I ended up buying mid rise shorts but they are constantly wedging me 😩
I’m desperate for comfy knickers. I don’t know if I need a size smaller as my old knickers are falling down when I walk fast.
When did knicker buying get so complicated???
I’ve looked at Sloggi but ther could be an expensive mistake. Also they are what my octogenarian mother always wore.

Clarityiskey · 06/06/2025 20:41

Try wirapa from Amazon. Not very glam but amazingly comfy

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 06/06/2025 21:12

I get overwhelmed by choice everytime I go to the shops, and regularly see other people looking blankly at the shelves, too. Modern life. 🤷‍♀️

Richandstrange · 06/06/2025 21:47

I've finally settled on Tesco's own 5 pack plain black cotton boy shorts, mainly because I can't bear elastic round the leg holes. I'm overweight with a bit of a belly overhang and they're also the only ones I've found where the top elastic doesnt settle in the crease and get sweaty/itchy/sore. VPL is minimal as, again, no elastic round the leg holes and they have a bit of stretch so cling nicely on the bum without disappearing up the bum crack. But yes, way too much choice and such an individual thing to find what works for you so completely get your indecision and bewilderment!

tillyandmilly · 06/06/2025 21:51

I don’t know how people wear those cheese wire thongs ! they look so uncomfortable and sorry to say unhygienic? I could never wear them!

CheeseWisely · 06/06/2025 21:55

Low or high rise shorts for me. No VPL as they sit under the crease of my bum, I’d go for my genuine size at M&S as a size bigger feel like they’re falling down.

BambinaCucina · 06/06/2025 23:31

I either go for my size or size down with M&S pants.

No VPL shorts for me, too. Preferably microfiber, but also have their fancier lacy ones which are lovely.

RomainingCalm · 06/06/2025 23:38

All I want from M&S is to be able to buy matching bra and pants. I want full briefs because I am old and saggy. I find them in the right size but the matching bra (displayed elsewhere) is only available in a 32B. I then find the right size bra in a different colour, stomp back across the lingerie department to find that the only matching pants are a size 8-10.

And repeat.

It shouldn’t be this hard.

Beautifulweeds · 07/06/2025 00:13

For me, always mini briefs, Matalan. Can't stand thongs, feel like a permanent wedgie. Do like lace thongs for nights out.

As we get older our choice changes but mini briefs still for me. Xxx

I find the M & S bikini briefs to be very comfortable. They aren't overly generous though, so I always buy the next size up.

TaterTots68 · 07/06/2025 08:29

I avoid shorts at all costs (unless you are a fan of back and front wedgie). I like the midi briefs personally

THEDEACON · 08/06/2025 12:08

Do they have VPL? I am desperately looking for no VPL but also something that will give a bit of tummy control as things are not what they used to be! I am not sure whether I can have both of these things in one!

StarlightLady · 13/06/2025 17:16

I don’t get the VPL thing. All it means is someone has knickers on, which most of us do most of the time.

That said, for me, it’s too warm for any today 😀.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/06/2025 17:18

And this is why I gave up on wearing knickers after a hysterectomy in 2009.

Freedom from underwear tyranny!

In the warm weather l often don’t wear any with summer dresses and skirts. I do like an air conditioned undercarriage, and no, l don’t wear short skirts or do cartwheels! But l never go without when l’m on a period or wearing trousers, the latter rare for me in summer.

Sandysandyfeet · 14/06/2025 07:23

Plain black cotton, used to get bikini now have aged into high rise or full brief. I have no idea how any one can tolerate a thong (also a bit yuck) or shorts as they feel very wrong and always wedging or sweaty micro fibre or itchy lace.

Sandysandyfeet · 14/06/2025 07:26

Non-pant wearers - I f you are serious and not just trying to get a reaction does that mean you wash your skirts every time you wear them as they are basically your underwear when you sit down? Not very eco friendly. What if they are dry clean only? Also - yuck!
