I can recommend these by Chantelle, which are currently reduced on the John Lewis website.

I've just measured the gusset (7cm) similar ones I have from M&S are 5cm - makes a difference!

One size? What size are you, if you don’t mind me asking? I love a sturdy pair of knicks, but I do have a… (see username).

Westfacing · 02/06/2025 10:39

I'm a size 10 in M&S but have a belly and these do stretch so I can see how they would fit quite a few sizes up.

I made the mistake of buying the bikini briefs first which were fine (7cm gusset!) stretch wise but because of the belly rolled down in the front!

I've just done a stretch test - they comfortably stretch to at least 22 inches wide (56cm)

Nylon knickers though 😵‍💫

Westfacing · 02/06/2025 11:12

I imagine most stretchy knickers are Nylon of some sort, otherwise they wouldn't stretch!

are there serious discussions oon Mumsnet…, steer me in the direction. Yes, buy knickers, yes I would like freebies and my daughter annoys me. But that it is not my whole life - we are living in uncertain times and all of us must have opinions of how our families should go forward. We need to think what kind of society we want to bring up our children.

Why are you on the Style & Beauty forum then? Probably best to check the current affairs one.

I find nylon knickers very unpleasant, even if they do have a cotton gussett and cost nearly £15!

MrsGusset · 02/06/2025 13:32

Those look right up my alley. So to speak.

I've already thought about what kind of society we need and it's one where we all wear comfortable knickers.

Knitted cotton stretches.
Many cotton knickers are 95% cotton and 5% elastane but most of the elastane is in the waist band and leg trim.

This is why I like the M&S ones - the elastane seems to feature in the full fabric of the knickers, so they don't go baggy around the crutch/arse compared to the equivalent from Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys etc. And at least M&S grundies have a decent width gusset, I recently tried some from Primark - gigantic kecks with minimal stretch, and a skinny gusset! No use at all for those of us with a weak bladder!

My only gripe with M&S is the lace trim - it cuts into ones groin a little. But at £8 for 4 (5?) pairs they are good value for the quality.

@WalterMittysPuppet
I used to wear M&S knickers but I have developed a latex allergy, which is triggered by the elastane in the trims. I have now switched to these romance crushers, which are 95% cotton / 5% spandex (spandex doesn't contain latex). They are incredibly comfortable and wash well.

@Westfacing these have a 100% cotton 'wide crotch' as they put it!

'Wide' how unkind! It's just normal width we're after, not some skimpy narrow strip!

I find them very soft and comfortable - and not in the least 'Nylony' - I think the word Nylon has put people off. They get 4.5* reviews on the JL website.

Anyway, I've ordered six more pairs as they're reduced - so will have four ivory and four black. I'll now chuck out the M&S Flexifit knickers that I bought last year as they all gone very baggy around the legs.

I have the bikini style ones and think they are great. I’m yet to find any cotton pants that don’t give a vpl but these are great for that (I won’t do things anymore)

I bought those innersey ones after seeing a recommendation here. I thought they were utterly ugly with no shape or style and gave the packet to charity. Flabby cotton drawers.

Another vote for these knickers, they are so comfortable with proper bum coverage and the waistband sits above my abdomen surgery overhang.

IReallyLoveItHere · 02/06/2025 16:12

I buy these from amazon. Thick cotton, really stretchy, good width (7.5cm on size 12) gusset and cover everything without being granny knickers.

They're true to size but so stretchy you can easily size up for additional comfort.

urghhh47 · 02/06/2025 16:13

My daughter likes the innersey ones but I don't get on with them. I had a post on here the other day asking about knickers as my favourites (next fullrise) have been changed!!! Fabric not soft anymore and cut is less generous. Slightly higher cut on the leg and bottom and well - just slightly less fabric. Cutting coats via shrinkflation no doubt and cheaper cotton).

LoveItaly · 02/06/2025 16:18

I like the Wirarpa mid rise knickers from Amazon, very comfortable and last well.

cannaethink · 02/06/2025 16:31

They look very similar to these which are my favourites. Also a 7cm gusset, in more sizes and much cheaper.
