Sketchers pull on - a trendy alternative

Right, I've peaked—my comfy Skechers have to go. I've seen a lot of older ladies wearing them lately, and while they look great, I am at just 50 and really do not want to be put into the older lady category yet (I know this is on me and my attitude to ageing). However, I really need the convenience of pull-on sneakers, so are there other more stylish brands that I should check out?

I'm 47 and keen to buy some. They look so comfy and convenient!

YinYangalang · 24/05/2025 15:48

No amount of trendy shoes can hide the fact you need/prefer pull on trainers. Do your feet a favour. If they are happy don’t let your pride get in the way.

Nike Flyease

I’m 30 and I live in Skechers. They ain’t old lady shoes to me. Just comfy!!!! Along with my crocs lol. Skechers and crocs. All I wear.

IcedPurple · 24/05/2025 15:54

I am 55 and have 3 pairs of Sketchers, one of which I bought just last week. So I'm no spring chicken but not quite a pensioner yet.

Jazzicatz · 24/05/2025 15:57

I am 52 and wear platform converse and they are super comfy but also trendy!

Can i just ask, do you want pull ons because you can't get other shoes on without a struggle, because balance or bending down /crouching is hard?

If so, it's really worth doing the excercises to improve these things now as they have a huge impact on how quickly you 'age'. Being able to balance on one foot for 30 seconds for eg is a longevity marker, and being able to squat down is also closely related to 'good' aging.. Both primarily because they're associated with a lower likelihood of falling, which can lead shockingly quickly to a loss of mobility.

I'm useless at exercise but I'm trying to resist the recent temptation to start putting socks on sitting down (50s) and to crouch down when getting soemthing out of cupboards etc. I've been really shocked at how quickly that difficulty has come on.

To be fair, I’m going to put laces in mine. I bought them because I need a replacement for some others I threw away recently. It’s not about the ‘slip on’ for me, I just find the adidas ones I bought are too flat to walk far in.

I hate to break it to to you, but you are wearing pull on trainers. That IS old.

Most of my DS’s contemporaries are seriously into vintage clothing. Not just because it is cheap but also because it fits in with the whole recycling eco beliefs. DS raided his DFs wardrobe and rarely buys anything new.
Nothing is “old” nowadays.

But then my generation were the same 40 yrs ago. The whole charity shop trend was just starting in the early 80s. The charity shops were full of real vintage 50s and 60s classics and dressing individually was easy.

The recent trend for shirt wasted dresses is just a revisit to the 1980s. If we had worn them in our 20s they would have been seen as “old”. Even now I can’t bring myself to wear the style since they remind me of my DMs go to style in her 40s. But they have been popular in the 20 somethings for the last couple of seasons.

I do have one dress in this style and I love it but I always feel about 75 in it.

As for slip on shoes, my DS20 treats all his shoes as slip ons. I don’t think he has tied the shoe laces on his Nike airs since he got them. It would be so much easier if they did a slip on version.

Fashion has been recycling design since the 1960s so if you have been around long enough you will have seen it before. We all swore that we’d never wear flares again and wide leg trousers have made a comeback. I have resurrected a couple of pairs from the back of my wardrobe this year.

Doesn't everyone sit down to put socks on? And crouch for low cupboards?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/05/2025 08:49

khaa2091 · 23/05/2025 10:49

Merrell slip ons are my preferred choice (my mother wears Sketchers!)

Came to say this as well OP, really comfy too.

Mydadsbirthday · 25/05/2025 09:08

I am mid 40s and recently took my mum to buy some new slip in Skechers. She's 77.

I didn't like them at the time but I've recently bought some similar ones from M&S and they're great. And I'm usually a trainer snob!

ThirdStorm · 25/05/2025 09:18

I’m in my early 40s and just discovered sketcher slip ins. Love them. Got them in 3 colours! It’s the first time in my life I can afford decent trainers! 🤣

No, they don’t.

StrikeForever · 25/05/2025 10:02

I am currently wearing my second pair of Sketchers. I have a history of plantar fasciitis and also arthritis in my feet. I wear my Sketchers when I need to walk any significant distance, as I find them very comfortable and my feet remain pain free. I wear my Nike Cortez when just ‘popping around’. I’m 66! I don’t really get the Podiatrists who say Sketchers are bad for feet, as that clashes with my own (history of painful) experience.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/05/2025 10:03

Fitflops?

Not exactly trendy but maybe less untrendy.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/05/2025 10:06

Bobbybobbins · 24/05/2025 09:28

They will have to prise my arch support Skechers from my cold, dead feet. Although I love flatter shoes like converse they hurt my feet so much now.

Inserts will sort you out

Letshavetea1 · 25/05/2025 10:07

I may have missed you saying how much you want to spend? I love Russell and Bromley and Geox. Both do fashionable but supremely comfortable leather trainers. I have both slip ons and lace ups. My latest pair are from Russell and Bromley. I’m a lot older than you OP and I don’t own any Skechers!

GinghamMistress · 25/05/2025 10:20

Sod that, my slip on sketchers are heaven and they are hear to stay

Jarstastic · 25/05/2025 10:44

I have seen the Russell and Bromley ones and really like them and would buy them in a heartbeat if they didn’t have Russell and Bromley emblazed on the back!

I have had trainers with a zip from Caprice which I bought in a small shoe shop. Also recently discovered Gabor in Jones shoe shop. They even do half sizes. Ended up buying a pair on the John Lewis website but they don’t stock the half sizes.

ChiChiRaRa · 25/05/2025 10:51

Stella McCartney Adidas

Letshavetea1 · 25/05/2025 11:48

@Jarstastic I don’t like logos either, but I buy them for the style, quality and comfort. I don’t think you’ll find better. Have bought Jones and Gabor and they don’t last as well or have the same great designs.

Astrabees · 25/05/2025 14:23

This section of Mumsnet is called "Style and Beauty" not "Comfy stuff" Sketchers are not stylish or beautiful, but yes they are comfy. I had one pair years ago when I needed something with the toe in to visit temples that were light enough to carry in my bag. I did wear them for gardening after that but would never have worn them out. What is wrong with a pair of trainers from, say, New Balance or Free People that are really comfortable and look good too?

casualcrispenjoyer · 25/05/2025 14:25

I don’t understand why you can’t buy a comfortable pair of running shoes or comfortable trainers in a nice colour way and add some elastic laces via Amazon?
