I haven't shopped on Shein before and I'm wondering if I should buy these dresses and the quality expected?

They usually have reviews and people often post photos trying them on in the reviews. I usually find them helpful. they are usually ok quality for the price.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 14/05/2025 12:47

I have NEVER bought anything from shein and put it anywhere other than the bin.
Those are ones with good reviews that I researched.

Just get on vinted and buy a nice monsoon or M&s dress
You can get them new with tags or new without tags for the same price

just admit you don't like Shein and have never bought from them or Chinese or people that are poor and you would never buy clothes that have been worn and no tags

I buy fairly frequently. They vary in quality although my very best new jeans are from them and I love them;)

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 14/05/2025 12:53

I have a similar one to the dark blue one and it’s great. I’ve got lots of SHEIN dresses for work and they wash and wear like a dream!

YYYDlilah · 14/05/2025 12:55

It's Sheit.

I just wish the shops had choice.
Is the quality a bit like Asda?.

I've never bought from them, but I have a colleague who is always well dressed in what appears to be beautiful dresses. When I asked where she bought her clothes she said she buys all her work stuff from Shein.

YYYDlilah · 14/05/2025 13:43

It's what you find on the rails of tat in the charity shop. Thin, flimsy, polyester.

smileymylie25 · 14/05/2025 13:44

I buy quite often and never had a problem just read the reviews

intrepidpanda · 14/05/2025 13:53

I am 5ft and fat. Shein dresses seem to be the only ones I have found that fit me well.
I also like cool and floaty. Many higher end brands with better quality fabrics, I find quite heavy. Especially in summer.

WillTheSHTFsoon · 14/05/2025 13:56

I have one very similar to the green one but the colour is slightly different on mine, I love it. So comfortable and light, I've already worn it about 7 times in the last couple of weeks. If you've not ordered from Shein before check the sizing and reviews, things tend to run small in my experience so I always size up by 1/2 sizes depending on the garment

I would be absolutely mortified to admit that.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 25/05/2025 18:00

Well @SnoozingFox when someone asks me where I’ve got my dresses from I'm happy to admit it!

Iloveeverycat · 25/05/2025 18:15

I have never had a problem with the dresses from Shein read the reviews to be sure. The sizes are good too.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/05/2025 18:31

Apricot have similar styles, they are carried by places like Next, new look and Dorothy perkins, as well as having their own store. The quality is nice for the price.

suki1964 · 25/05/2025 18:46

Cant comment on Shein, but I can comment on apricot - I buy quite a few bits from them, pretty and cheap although they dont do a petite range

HaddyAbrams · 25/05/2025 18:50

I got caught up in the hype as it were, and lure of cheap clothing and bought a dress from Shein/Temu (can't remember which)
It fits beautifully. Everyone always comments on how pretty it is. But my word is it sweaty. Whatever it's made of (polyester?) Is no good in hot weather, and a strappy sun dress is meant to be worn in hot weather.

And I felt quite grubby when I realised the awful ethical and environmental impact of such online stores.

zenas · 25/05/2025 19:27

Is Shein illegal? No.
Is it providing stuff for people who want a huge variety of things at a click? Yes
Can you return items, Yes
Is it affordable, very.

Until it is banned or made illegal to buy from there, it's a no brainer for many people. Those who shriek in horror at the ethics and so on can continue to buy elsewhere. I might add that there is absolutely no guarantee that ANY other supplier/shop is any more ethical than the fast fashion places.

Do we get a certificate of ethics from non Shein type places? No.

I do use Shein often for bits and pieces. What I like about them is they have a version of nearly everything. I buy a lot from the men's section for my long arms, especially winter stuff. And Summer shorts that actually come to my knee to hide the crap above the knee which is mainly my thunder thighs and big arse. You get the picture.

Happy shopping.

NCfor24 · 25/05/2025 19:33

Honestly I've bought quite a lot and keep over 90%. That's more than I keep from shopping on the high street.
Read reviews and sizing info. Check the fabric details. Everything I've returned has been because I didn't like the fabric.
Returns are easy so no risk. Sometimes they refund and say don't bother returning the item.

I had a few dresses last summer and they were all lovely. Will buy more this year. Also great for items I won't wear a lot, so "night out" or evening cruisewear etc. I don't treat any purchase as disposable but will happily pass on or sell for a quid or two on Vinted.

My new favourite jeans are Shein and they are amazing. Perfect fit and length.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 25/05/2025 19:38

DD and I use SHEIN quite a bit and we are usually really happy with fitting and quality. I’d definitely recommend it. There are a few things that haven’t looked that good on but that has much more to do with me than the clothing.

hopspot · 25/05/2025 19:39

I have bought lots. All washes well. Much better than more expensive high street stuff and looks great.

zenas · 25/05/2025 19:41

I often wonder if some of the chain stores use Shein manufacturers also. How would we know!

MoominMai · 25/05/2025 19:41

Has Shein quality improved then? I last used about two years ago and quality was always very questionable and I just couldn’t understand how the items get usually almost always 4* or so but they were awful in real life!

BunnyEaster · 25/05/2025 19:43

They will be polyester. I have three shein dresses over five years old and haven't had to bin anything yet due to getting worn out.

Also you can return easily and free so no need to bin if you think they are shit. Shein is OK and I'd justify buying because I only buy about 1 outfit a year now.
