Am I the only person in the UK right now who hates barrel leg jeans?

I should probably have added 'on me'. I've never found a more unflattering cut of jeans on me. Granted, I'm sure I'm a funny shape because jeans are the bane of my life and when I find a perfect pair I'm ecstatic, but I look comical in them.

I saw someone in a pair of cream ones the other day and they looked effortlessly fabulous. I look like Coco the clown.

Anyone else have a style of clothing that they like on other people but just doesn't suit them? Is it just me and my funny shape?

I have a pair and like them but I feel like almost the point is that they’re not ‘flattering’ in the sense that we often think of flattering as trying to make you look like you have an hourglass figure or accentuate you’re ’best bits’ and hide the ‘bad bits’ but barrel leg jeans are just a fun interesting shape that isn’t about trying to look sexy/small/feminine. At least that’s what I like!

As with everything (sighs), I am 5' 1"...🙁

5 foot 0 here so I feel your pain! I follow The Petite Lady on Instagram and she did a full week trying on different styles of jeans. She looks great in some of the wide leg / carrot / barrel styles, whereas I just look very odd!

Ok, I may take a look, but if it didn't work for you...! The other problem is that I'm very short waisted so the proportions sometimes look off.

Oh and the item I always think looks amazing on others and not on me is the crisp white shirt. I love that look! I've bought so many crisp white shirts and without fail I look like I'm wearing my school uniform.

Ah yes. I can do a white shirt BUT…..trench coats!! So chic and timeless on others, but on me….it looks like I have been mugged by the gaberdine goblins. Just too much ….everything - a trench coats wears me, not the other way around.

Maireas · 11/05/2025 17:27

Trench coats are funny, they either look chic or remind me of Inspector Columbo, but with little in between. I got a really nice forest green one which works quite well.

CoffeeandWalnuts · 11/05/2025 17:29

I've got some and I really like the shape, they're quite subtle barrel legs. I tried a few on and some were ridiculous.

imfae · 11/05/2025 18:10

Love this thread . Haven’t tried barrel legged jeans , would suspect they would ridiculous on me .
re the trench coat .
My old very classic trench coat , seems to have somehow shrunk whilst sitting in the coat cupboard . Is it some new variant of moth ? Are they shrinking rather than eating fabrics???. Of course nothing to do with an expanding waist line …

I excitedly purchased a new one , saw it in Grazia . Hardly ever buy it and am not really a follower of trends .
I thought I looked ok in it , my teenage daughter - said I looked like a detective . Didn’t enquire further , Inspector Gadget , Cluseau ( sp ?) , or even Columbo - none of these a good look ….

Have also recently purchased some white blouses / shirts as was fed up of not having anything to go with patterned trousers etc . Didn’t think of Adam Ant . May have to brush up on my make up skills and go the whole hog !

I also give you - wide legged trousers in general . Have ordered so many pairs that look amazing on the model but rubbish on me . I am also average height , so not petite but obviously not tall and lean either .
is there any hope left for me ??

DramaAlpaca · 11/05/2025 18:19

I thought I'd hate barrel leg jeans, until I tried a pair on. I love them on me, but I'm very tall with broad shoulders and they suit my body shape.

I like a trenchcoat too, but only those without a storm flap across the back. With my height and build a storm flap can make me look a bit mannish, which really isn't an effect I want.

Cyclingmummy1 · 11/05/2025 18:25

I tried some on in River Island prepared for them to look terrible and that look amazing! They are actually balloon which is even more clown like 😆

The crisp white shirt, on the other hand, is not a look I can pull off. Pink pin stripe is my thing.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 11/05/2025 18:44

I thought they'd look awful on me, but I tried a pair and bought them! Skinnies look daft on me, boot legs strange, but I like the flares and high waisted barrel jeans, as they balance my body shape. Glad we have a wide variety of styles available of late.

Maireas · 11/05/2025 18:45

Apart from River Island, does anyone have any other recommendations?

Motherknowsrest · 11/05/2025 18:47

I love them. I have athletic thighs and am thin everywhere else. Most jeans and trousers will hardly go over my knees, unless I want to get two of me in the waistband.

Nitgel · 11/05/2025 18:50

I can't wait to see the back of them. Ugly shape. I just want lovely straight leg trousers. Wide legs awful too

Maireas · 11/05/2025 18:52

I tried on some cotton trousers in Marks and the legs looked huge, I don't think I could get used to that style. Although I have given up on skinny jeans.

SansaClegane · 11/05/2025 19:17

I love mine!! I think they look fresh and are super comfy, they seem to flatter my shape, too.
Disclaimer I am tall (ish) at 5'7" and with reasonably long legs for my height.

AnnParrot · 11/05/2025 19:21

Barrel leg jeans were terrible on me (long body short legs, hourglass), there is no softness and they just make me look ROUND. But the M&S barrel leg (work) trousers are great - the shape and the way they hang look really quite elegant, and much much much better than wide leg trousers ever do on me.

Where did you get them from?

Maireas · 11/05/2025 19:23

£880. Bargain.

Daffodilsarefading · 11/05/2025 19:23

In my opinion, they only look good on young people and by that I mean 30 or younger. Plus if you are over 25 then you have to be slim to get away with them.
Of course if you don’t give a rats arse how you look then you can wear them at any age or weight.

I got some from Sainsbury’s, they have quite a few but I got 2 pairs of the mid rise ones.

I have a short torso and big shoulders and I find them very flattering.

It’s not that the people wearing them don’t give a rats arse about what they’re wearing ( I think a lot of people probably think a lot about their clothes) it’s that they don’t give a rats arse about other people’s opinions about what they’re wearing. Most people walking around are uninspiring in the extreme so their opinions on my clothing choices are largely irrelevant.

SirChenjins · 11/05/2025 16:53

They don’t look good on either of those models Confused

I guess it’s all subjective. Do you like baggy jeans in general?

See to me straight legged would be the ugly shape. I've tried them and they are not flattering at all and make me feel very mumsy and middle aged.
Give me barrel legged jeans or balloon trousers or parachute pants anyday!

As for trenchcoats it depends. I have a plaid and a denim one but I hate the classic camel. It's another thing that makes me feel middle aged.
And I don't do crisp white anything probably because I'm a messy eater! 😂

Turmerictolly · 11/05/2025 22:48

ByTheNine · 11/05/2025 09:37

I must have the same shape. I love barrel leg trousers on the hanger and on other people but they make me look like I'm about to go and harvest turnips in the 13th century.

🤣🤣
