Am I the only person in the UK right now who hates barrel leg jeans?

I should probably have added 'on me'. I've never found a more unflattering cut of jeans on me. Granted, I'm sure I'm a funny shape because jeans are the bane of my life and when I find a perfect pair I'm ecstatic, but I look comical in them.

I saw someone in a pair of cream ones the other day and they looked effortlessly fabulous. I look like Coco the clown.

Anyone else have a style of clothing that they like on other people but just doesn't suit them? Is it just me and my funny shape?

I’ve never seen anyone wearing them who looks good in them (imo, obviously). It’s amazing what the fashion industry can persuade people to wear.

Ah, indeed. I just need to refer to pictures of my younger self to confirm that this is true.

Oh and the item I always think looks amazing on others and not on me is the crisp white shirt. I love that look! I've bought so many crisp white shirts and without fail I look like I'm wearing my school uniform.

Truthfully, I think it's not just you! Definitely a school uniform/waitress vibe.

Yes! Me too! I just can't carry it off.

I bought a beautiful high neck white blouse a couple of months ago thinking I would look like Emilia Fox in Silent Witness. In reality I looked like I was in an Adam and the Ants tribute band which wasn't really the look I was going for. #showingmyage

😂😂

I look so bad in them, I actually laughed out loud in the changing room. Like a bandy-legged cowboy. I knew they were unlikely to suit me, but I didn't think they'd be that bad 😂

I think like anything unflattering but trendy, you need to be slim and relatively tall.

As with everything (sighs), I am 5' 1"...🙁

Maireas · 11/05/2025 13:02

Remember when berets made a return? I thought I'd look chic and un peau avante garde. No, I looked like Frank Spencer.

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2025 13:09

Can someone post of a photo of someone they think looks good in them, because even when I see them online, the models look a proper sight inho.Grin

PunchUpInPoplar · 11/05/2025 13:16

I think jeans and trousers fashions are something you really can’t follow religiously if you want to flatter your own shape. You have to stick to what actually suits you, with maybe a nod to what’s ‘current’ elsewhere in your outfit.

I can never, ever pull off skinny, flared, bootcut, ‘Mom’, jeans or trousers. I don’t even bother trying them on. The minute I saw barrell jeans in the shops I instantly went ‘Nah!’. doing many people can make them with to ge honest.

Princessfluffy · 11/05/2025 13:22

Trench coats look awful on me as does a white shirt. Barrel legs though are my fave jeans and I get so many compliments on them.

henlake7 · 11/05/2025 13:46

I love barrel legged jeans, I never see anybody wearing them but I reckon I look ok in them!
TBF I love any kind of wide legged, balloon, baggy style trousers. Im a fairly slim basic rectangle shape though so I dont really have any bits that stand out!

AuntieDolly · 11/05/2025 13:47

I tried a pair and it transported me right back to my 1979 ‘peg’ jeans. Unfortunately, I don’t have my 1979 body 🙁

RaraRachael · 11/05/2025 13:53

I've worn jeans all my life but at 62 I feel I need a change - any suggestions (apart from wide or barrel legs)

I'm aiming for comfort rather than fashion.

CherryRipe1 · 11/05/2025 13:55

Ugly things and unflattering

Namerchangee · 11/05/2025 13:56

@ByTheNine that is exactly how I look too!

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 11/05/2025 14:00

No! I think they are the most unflattering things ever!
Well, apart from leggings.
And boob tubes
😃

OuijaBoard · 11/05/2025 14:15

I feel like the shape can work if you're tallish with broad shoulders and a narrow, well-defined waist. But they also look better in a thinner fabric. In denim they seem too thick/stiff somehow, which contributes to the exaggerated, bandy-legged look.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 11/05/2025 14:25

I've only seen them once IRL (am in the sticks) and I thought they looked daft. So I won't be trying them. Although I like to look and feel good, I don't understand people who are slaves to fashion. Why go along with whatever is decided or dictated as being 'in fashion'?
As for what suits us, I love hats but look daft in anything apart from a fedora or panama. I was once in Accessorize and someone next to me tried on a bucket hat. It was so flattering - she looked like Audrey Hepburn. I tried one and looked like Bill and/or Ben (flowerpot men).

It's an alternative to Suzi Quattro's fat nan.

I think you're right about blind adherence to fashion. Far better to develop your own style.

They just look like loose jeans most of the time. They don’t look very different. If you suit loose slouchy jeans you’d probably suit barrel leg jeans

I love them and am buying them all before the fashion gods make everything skinny again. I am hefty of thigh and athletic of calf, but delicate of ankle.

Same - please let them stay for a while at least!

Tooty78 · 11/05/2025 16:48

I bought a pair in Sainsbury's that had been reduced because I thought they would make great gardening trousers, and they are! Roomy and not restrictive when kneeling down, wouldn't wear them out of the garden though they look ridiculous!

They will be racks and racks of them in the sales I bet.

They don’t look good on either of those models Confused

RaraRachael · 11/05/2025 17:00

Are both models wearing barrel leg jeans? They just look like a wide legged baggy mess.
I used to have flares in the 70s and nearly broke my leg several times getting my foot caught in them coming downstairs
