(lighthearted)

If someone posts something or asks for an opinion, and you come on to criticise, diss, be unpleasant, or call it cheap, frumpy or old-fashioned, you should have to post something you like, so other posters can judge your credibility.

I grew up in Lincolnshire and in our town there was a weekly newspaper that for some reason always referred to the residents of our town as “folk” - Lincolnshire folk. I used to rage about the term and now I’m old I find myself slipping into that usage myself. ( can you imagine? And I live in Surrey now too… although Surrey Folk doesn’t have the same connotations)
I feel like Folk should be living cheek by jowl in the dictionary next to Comfy which I personally don’t use but will now I know it annoys people so much. Ugly is also an interesting concept for shoes… I think the trend is actually “fugly” shoes like crocs. I bought these shoes from Toast that were so fugly when I got them out the box I laughed. They’re by Japanese brand Flower Mountain and we all know Japanese Folk are cool…plus they’re so so comfy so Im keeping them.
(I’m off to Grayson Perry tomorrow and trying to pull together a suitable outfit … no clue currently and ChatGPT has just suggested the weirdest combo.) 🥴

I quite like those, actually. They're not trying too hard.

And I mean, to be fair, I've just come in from dinner and changed out of my fairly comfy Robert Clergeries into my favourite home shoes - a pair of Fitflops, so frumpy they would make any respectable nana cry with horror for me.

Further to the excellent suggestion from @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie about ‘no-one dressing up in London’ I propose that, following the Royal Opera House ritual, the offenders be exiled for a year to the crappest town in the UK (which will be decided by ballot).

It might just help them appreciate why, for some of us, a trip to London is a real treat that’s enhanced even further if you have some nice clothes to wear.

I think there’s posters who jump in with the “nobody dresses up in London” comment when people actively want an excuse to dress up, with a more-metropolitan-then-thou suggestion that it would be terribly gauche to look like you’ve made any kind of effort.

But sometimes people are unnecessarily stressing about the perceived need to dress up to fit in when they’d fit in just fine wearing whatever.

Sorry I don't make the rules, they'll have to ask the op.

(I guess they might get away with it provided they don't follow up with, 'You can always tell when someone's not from London'.)

SisterTeatime · 09/05/2025 13:31

I like those sandals @Divebar2021

I also like the word ‘comfy’ (ha ha I really do)

I don’t like clothes being described as ‘butter soft’, or any variation thereof, and would ban posters for that.

Hmmm. I think maybe that's more of a guideline than a rule issue?

I live, work and go out in London all the time and the only things that have ever made me look at someone and think, probably not from London are (1) if they're wearing a massive puffy black coat when it's 28 degrees, and, on the flip side (2) if it's a man walking up Ken High Street in shorts and flip flops when it's 3 degrees, I assume we're dealing with an Antipodean.

Never have I looked at someone, either dressed up or casually attired and made a judgement based on that.

@SisterTeatime I can accept a need for a blanket ban on all food-related terms (butter soft, crisp) as related to clothing.

Which actually brings me to another pet peeve: posters who advise a floaty skirt or a floaty dress. It's the kind of term that I've only ever seen on here, usually employed by people reading too many internet descriptions. I've never heard anyone use it irl to describe what they're wearing. Oh, I'll just waft in in my floaty skirt, said no one ever. Sets my teeth right on edge.

I disagree entirely.

You've clearly got a Swindon Roadman and a Geordie there.

I also like the word comfy 😞, it’s a friendly word whereas comfortable sounds too formal.

weareallcats · 09/05/2025 15:15

There should definitely be an agreement that no one should be going onto threads dedicated to particular brands or styles and saying how much you dislike that brand or style. Someone once came onto the Cabbages and Roses thread to comment that the clothes were ridiculous, so I responded by saying that, on that basis, the people who frequent that thread probably wouldn’t like the poster’s clothes either - they took offence, which I thought was hilarious.

StressyMcStressFace · 09/05/2025 15:47

In the same vein as the wrap dress, 50s dress and hideously overpriced sack, may I suggest we also ban the ubiquitous MN jumpsuit 😣. I.e. the most (imo) impractical piece of clothing designed for women. Who wants to strip naked every time they go to the loo and have a permanent wedgie when wearing one? If someone wants to wear a dress then please don't suggest a fecking jumpsuit 🙃

I'm with you there. And while we're at it, at risk of causing offence, posters should only recommend Hillary Clinton trouser suits to posters who want trousers!

Looking for a lovely gauzy dress for my sister's wedding. It's an evening wedding on an Italian terrace in June. Sleeveless is fine.
Have you considered this magenta M&S trouser suit, OP? I wore it to the February meeting of Women Who Love Magenta Trouser Suits with a boxy tee, and got so many compliments!

I don't mind 'comfy' as a description for things like pyjamas, sweatpants, etc, but 'comfies' to mean those kind of clothes makes me feel a bit ill.

I'd also propose banning well-meaning attempts to evangelise particularly alternative/attention-grabbing/non-conformist - whatever you want to call them - clothes to posters who clearly do not want that. Yes, women should take up space, yes, women should spend their own money on what they want, and not feel bound by beauty standards, etc, but someone who posts 'I am self-conscious about my size and like to wear floaty wrap dresses and have a limited budget' is probably not going to be converted to The Way Of The Expensive Oversized Edgy Thing by a MN poster, even if is nicer and better made than the identikit Next/Phase 8/whatever that will also be suggested.

Yes, agree. A poster who wants a nice, wearable dress from Boden for a 5 year old's birthday party and a drink at the local is not going to morph into Villanelle from Killing Eve and shouldn't be made to feel bad about that.

Although I would fork over a lot for this Chloe shirt

Especially when said over-sized sack is touted as high fashion, with sneering comments about cheaper stores alongside. We’ve been seeing too much of that on here recently imo.

Caterpillargirl23 · 09/05/2025 16:31

I would ban ' you will stand out more (at the beach, by the pool) if you wear a one piece rather than a bikini.'

BingoBling · 09/05/2025 16:48

Hmm...A ban on people with very good figures 'seeking assurance' fishingfor compliments..

As someone with a short waist and long legs I heartily endorse this rule. One pieces are the bane of my (beach/pool) existence as they never fit right.

@BingoBling I don't know. People with good figures can still genuinely be looking for reassurance. I don't know any woman, no matter how stunning, who doesn't have some insecurity or other.

I ended up at a couple of exhibitions today in Central London and let me tell you people may not be wearing heels but a lot of them have very much thought about their outfits. I’m guessing the most expensive was the woman wearing these jeans by Loewe which looked a shade nicer on her than the model here ( although just a shade ) Those jeans dear reader are £895. I didn’t even clock her handbag because my eyes were so drawn to her knees. She wasn’t even that old… in her 20’s. She paired it with a little red tweedy jacket in the style of Chanel which I can only say was probably Chanel. As the young folk say “ she looked expensive”.

How was she paying for it all I wonder?

(Either she’s a pioneering business woman or there is a “ daddy” of one variety or other)

Some enterprising AI is going to wander by this thread, suck all these rules into its learning algorithm, and then, any day now, in the dead of night, start to apply them. S&B will vanish, entirely, and horrible punishments will ensue for all who once posted here.

Or maybe it'll throw on a frock and ask if we think its processor looks slow.

SisterTeatime · 09/05/2025 19:17

Those Loewe jeans are wonderful.

zaxxon · 09/05/2025 21:56

Are those Loewe shoes as well? Love them

CertainUncertain · 10/05/2025 00:09

I do like those jeans, and am partial to a bit of Loewe (toiling away at city law for quite a while was my method). But I have to say, I've not bought several things from them recently that I otherwise might have because I won't wear things with very obvious branding. Unless they want to pay me - no problem with it in that instance!

Just did a google image search and it seems like quite a few brands have done similar or knock offs H&M and Zara look like they've done them. These aren't cheap but nothing like the price tag on Khaite shoes, and I actually think I like them better - if you click through you can see the python patterned ones
