(lighthearted)

If someone posts something or asks for an opinion, and you come on to criticise, diss, be unpleasant, or call it cheap, frumpy or old-fashioned, you should have to post something you like, so other posters can judge your credibility.

Instant account deletion for anyone who uses the derogatory descriptors 'granny', 'nana', 'old-lady' (all of which I have seen in the last few days) with an additional 200 lashes if, when challenged, they claim they're not being ageist because it's just factual innit.

Agreed, but let's add from the other side - Can I still wear (insert inoffensive item) now that I'm 30????

Guilty as charged on that count Milord, but it did teach me a valuable lesson and I’ve mended my ways.
Can put forward another phrase that should be banned imho ‘No one cares what you wear’.
I do. I would care if you turned up at my relatives funeral in white trainers (a recent post) but I wouldn’t say anything. I would care if you sat next to me at a Michelin restaurant in your everyday jumper (another recent thread).

Divebar2021 · 08/05/2025 11:49

Flattering is such a tricky one because I do understand that we don’t want to look worse than we actually are but it’s really inhibiting if you’re trying to work out your style. Work on the colours and shapes and vibes ( and practicalities of your lifestyle) first and then we can work out how to cover the tops of your arms.

Divebar2021 · 08/05/2025 11:52

( my own personal S&B bingo card for the posters with the hourglass shape is “ wrap dress “ and “50’s dresses “ which are both very very specific looks not seen that often in the wild )

I’ve been away from mn for a while but have posted on S&B under various names over the years.

My pet hate is that everything must be ‘flattering’ within a very narrow idea of what that means. I also dislike the idea that some garments are ‘always flattering’ or ‘always work’ - I’m sure this erroneous advice is responsible for about 60% of the white shirt manufacturing industry.

I’d ban people who jump on SB to say ‘why do you care, I just wear a fleece and jeans I’ve had since 1990’ and variations on that theme, plus anyone who scolds others because some people (not them, some other people) can only afford to spend £5 a year on clothes.

Do you think those are the same people who jump on Covid threads to say “why are you still testing?” Or Tattoo threads to say “no tattoo is the best tattoo”. You have to actively find these threads to go and be negative and unhelpful.

I might be banned after this post, but can I also propose that anyone discussing comfy sandals must have a naughty chair time out?

5 days for that exact phrase, 2 for the implication.

Has anybody ever been kicked off their own thread before? I like my comfy sandals. I also like my DMs and my silly not comfortable heeled boots - and I think that’s okay.

Go and sit in the corner for five minutes and think about what you have done.

No no no. You may like your sandals, you may wear your sandals, any sandals you like. You may refer to them as comfortable. You may not refer to as them comfy ever again!!!! It's a hideous word.

And I'm going to be brave and say it: If a word could be frumpy, it would be that one. Comfy is a frumpy word. Shuddering. It should be limited to Chat and 30 Days Only. I'm debating monetary fines for throwing it around over here.

Oh yes! This should cross reference with the wrap dress point above.

@Thinkle Those might be the same posters who come on a thread about the death of a famous person to say, who? never heard of them. Or favourite flavour of ice cream to say, never eat it, never will as I prefer a rye cracker swallowed dry for dessert.

I think it's better to have a mix of opinions. I ask folk their opinions in real life. Doesn't mean I do what they advise. I usually don't.

Awfully picky of you.....Im fine with white trainers or everyday jumpers. Now if you had said dinosaur costume or nipple tassels then you might have had a point!😂

I think 'wear what you want' comments are often in response to people thinking they cant wear things for arbitrary reasons. Its a chicken and egg scenario!

Maybe we should introduce a subclause where you are allowed to post 'am I too old/fat to wear x' but the responses must be 'yes.....yes, you are!'. That would probably stop people seeking validation from strangers who have never laid a hairy eyeball on them!😄

Itseatingmeup · 08/05/2025 18:27

It gives me a little smile when someone is asking for advice on stylish footwear to receive replies of "just wear something comfy, life's too short" and some pictures of ugly shoes.

Joins @CertainUncertain in the corner. Sorry Remus, I love you dearly but I detest the word 'comfy too'. Don't know why, it's probably totally irrational but it has a nails on blackboard effect.

Ghastly word. Just say it in full: comfortable.

Please note, I'm not saying shoes shouldn't be comfortable. Of course they should. I just don't believe in giving them a medal just because they meet a minimum standard of functionality. It's like praising an umbrella for keeping off the rain. All clothes should be comfortable - that's their job.

SwanOfThoseThings · 08/05/2025 18:30

It depends on the exact content of the post. Surely people post here for honest opinions? I don't think that saying a garment looks cheap, frumpy or old-fashioned is wrong. It would be unkind and unnecessary to say the poster looked cheap, frumpy or old-fashioned.^^

I don't disagree, I just want context. So, if for example, a person posts a dress saying, is this appropriate for a Michelin starred restaurant (to take a recent example) and a poster replies that it looks cheap, but it turns out their version of not cheap looking is this (from Shein), I want to know that for context.

*Please note, I would only wear the dress below somewhere appropriate, like, say Parents' Evening at school 😅

I agree with that, although I will say openly, that sometimes I'm looking for comfort and wearability and sometimes I'm looking for something else from a pair of shoes and will sacrifice a bit in that department. I think shoes that suit whatever need you have are absolutely fine.

Just, please, for all that is holy, don't call them 'comfy'!!!!

Can we also ban the situation where a poster doesn't have lots of money (shown by their thinking about something from Shein or M&S) but they get told it's all cheap and nasty and they should wear something around the £750 mark?

😂😂😂
Funnily enough I don’t think I ever use the word ‘comfy’ in real life, but it does remind me of my nana, so maybe I have a soft spot for it.

blubbyblub · 08/05/2025 19:16

Have you seen people on the street? I wouldn’t take their advice on fashion any more than I would my beagle

so many people are so incredibly out of date but so much so they don’t even know they are so they start saying something is not fashionable. It’s dire

Divebar2021 · 08/05/2025 19:43

I grew up in Lincolnshire and in our town there was a weekly newspaper that for some reason always referred to the residents of our town as “folk” - Lincolnshire folk. I used to rage about the term and now I’m old I find myself slipping into that usage myself. ( can you imagine? And I live in Surrey now too… although Surrey Folk doesn’t have the same connotations)
I feel like Folk should be living cheek by jowl in the dictionary next to Comfy which I personally don’t use but will now I know it annoys people so much. Ugly is also an interesting concept for shoes… I think the trend is actually “fugly” shoes like crocs. I bought these shoes from Toast that were so fugly when I got them out the box I laughed. They’re by Japanese brand Flower Mountain and we all know Japanese Folk are cool…plus they’re so so comfy so Im keeping them.
(I’m off to Grayson Perry tomorrow and trying to pull together a suitable outfit … no clue currently and ChatGPT has just suggested the weirdest combo.) 🥴

Can we ban advising people to wear ‘ a crisp white shirt’

NotMeNoNo · 08/05/2025 21:34

It creeps me out when people say they "live in" those M+S tracksuit trousers or something.

Also on the flattering subject, deliberately misunderstanding that oversized, chunky, practical or sports like items can be a trend or an intentional look. 5 years on and people are still saying "why would you wear such ugly sandals" or "it's just a shapeless sack" or "they look like men's shoes".
I mean I'm not sure I can do the Cos look but I still know it's a look.

Big, big yes to that.

No aspersions on white shirts, which I happen to love, but 'crispness' can get in the bin.
