Am I being ripped off at the hairdresser?

I recently had my hair done in Exeter and just want to sense check if this is all standard or a bit much.

The first time I went, I had a full colour, balayage, and a trim (literally an inch off) and it came to £225. That felt expensive, but I figured maybe it was the going rate?

6 weeks later I went back to get the roots done and that alone cost me £79. No cut, but did get it blow dried and straightened.

The salon isn’t anything fancy- it’s fine, but not high-end. it wasn’t some luxury VIP experience. I came in, sat down, got coloured, and left.

Is that just the going rate now? Or am I being overcharged?

That would cost you several hundred pounds in Knutsford, Cheshire. It all depends where you go.

I pay £60 in South Yorkshire 😃

I've just had my roots (all over brush on, not foils) and a blow dry and it was £140. I'm in Cheshire. It takes her 5 mins to put on the colour then I'm sat under a heater, washed off and blow dry takes 10 mins. It is a piss take but they have expensive overheads where I am. Foils and a cut etc would add at least another £100.

VirgosNeedGoals · 01/05/2025 15:59

Full head foils with 2 colours, cut and blow dry £90 West Midlands

Forgive my ignorance but never had much hairdresser experience. I colour my own white roots - is what yiu get done not achievable out of curiosity yourself with a good box dye?

madaboutpurple · 01/05/2025 16:00

I get a wash cut and blow for £45 in Stockport. It does seem to depend on where you go I think..

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 01/05/2025 16:04

I mean, London, so mental, obvs, but a brush on tint for me is £195, and cut is £180

Possibly but I am lazy and it makes my arms ache! I did it myself in lockdown and it started to look a bit rubbish.

Gundogday · 01/05/2025 16:04

Local person with salon in ‘summer house’ in garden - £95 for all head colour dye and hair cut and blow dry

Roots and haircut etc - approx £80

My old hairdresser was unable to do colour for health reasons. Went to his colleague just for colour - (no hair cut) - cost £125 ! Not been back. (although will go back to hairdresser for cut alone) I

I’d be useless doing it out if a box. Haven’t got the coordination

milliemummy87 · 01/05/2025 16:05

Thanks everyone - I’m honestly gobsmacked at how much cheaper it is in other parts of the UK. I’m seriously wondering if it’s worth driving into Wales or South Yorkshire next time.

I am in Yorkshire and I go to a hairdresser who has her own salon, just her working there.

Roots, cut and blow dry is £65
Full head of highlights with foils £130.

My hair is bra strap length, I have Olaplex in the full head of highlights to protect my hair. They usually charge extra for this. I have had this hairdresser for about 7 years, she is incredible and lovely to chat to as well. Shop around. Mine isn't in a city centre but in a studio on her own property so overheads are cheaper.

ethelredonagoodday · 01/05/2025 16:07

£70 for cut, colour (foils) and blow dry in S Yorks. I actually travel an hour from where I live to go to this hairdresser because she’s so good.

in the past, I’ve tried to find someone nearer to home, and paid significantly more than this, and the hairdressers I’ve tried are nowhere near as good as the one I use.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 01/05/2025 16:12

Full head highlights £82
Half head £66, Olaplex £17
Cut and blow dry £46
These are the prices for the junior stylists. The more experienced stylists charge more.
This is also in Exeter.

CautiousLurker01 · 01/05/2025 16:16

I’m afraid I don’t think you’re being ripped off - Balayage is a completely different technique to a ‘colour’ and the local hair dressers charge for a cut on top. Attached is the balayage price list at a local hairdresser, but of a huge chain. A cut starts at £60 for a technician and goes up to £136… so minimum you would pay around here would be £186; but you could pay as much as £300.

That said, I think most hairdressers rates near me are a total rip off, hence I have my hair trimmed once or twice a year and do my own roots with Clairol’s root touch up for £6!!

Can you be more specific because I’m paying £140 in West Yorkshire and would be happy to commute to save money.

Lundier · 01/05/2025 16:27

Cut and colour (full head highlights), blowdry and she'll curl as well if I've time. £75, West Yorkshire

Shufflebumnessie · 01/05/2025 16:50

Not a salon my hairdresser is mobile and comes to my house.
I pay £80 for Balayage & cut ( or £25 for just a cut), and she knows how to cut my curly hair which is a huge bonus!!
I'm in Hampshire.

mambojambodothetango · 01/05/2025 17:05

I now have a mobile hairdresser come to me and it's nearly half what I was paying in a salon. I'd have paid £120 for highlights, cut and blow dry and now pay £70. I have to sweep up the hair and make the tea but I don't mind that. Sounds very expensive where you are! I'm in quite a well heeled part of the SE.

thaigirl · 01/05/2025 17:09

Depends on whether they’re mobile or salon based and their level of expertise. I know some people round here pay about £70 for full head of highlights, wash, cut and blow dry.
I go to a salon with a proper colourist and pay £190. She’s brilliant though.

Cambridgeshire, small back water town.

Lallybroch · 01/05/2025 17:10

I live in the Northwest in a small town and my hairdresser charges £29 for a cut and blow-dry which I have every 6 weeks, then twice a year I have all over foils, cut and blow-dry and that's £100

doodleschnoodle · 01/05/2025 17:13

Full head of highlights and cut and blow dry is
£75 for me, but I’m in a village in north of Scotland!

Daisy03 · 01/05/2025 17:13

Roots and blow dry for me are £75, I get this every 4 weeks and get it cut every other time and will get charged £95 for that, so similar cost
