Am I being ripped off at the hairdresser?

I recently had my hair done in Exeter and just want to sense check if this is all standard or a bit much.

The first time I went, I had a full colour, balayage, and a trim (literally an inch off) and it came to £225. That felt expensive, but I figured maybe it was the going rate?

6 weeks later I went back to get the roots done and that alone cost me £79. No cut, but did get it blow dried and straightened.

The salon isn’t anything fancy- it’s fine, but not high-end. it wasn’t some luxury VIP experience. I came in, sat down, got coloured, and left.

Is that just the going rate now? Or am I being overcharged?

Highlights, colour on roots all over, toner, cut and blow dry £110 last month in the North West.

This week I popped in for a fringe trim and a part-only touch up where she just puts colour on the roots that are visible. I go home and wash it off myself. That costs £7.

I live in Bramhall, an expensive area of Manchester/ Cheshire, and pay £95 for hair head of highlights in two colours using foils, cut and blow dry. A cut and blow dry on its own is £45.

This is a local hairdresser in a small parade of shops about half a mile from the posh salons on the High Street where I know people who pay over £200. When I first moved here from the West Midlands, I refused to pay these silly prices and went round the smaller shops in the housing estates! Parking is a lot easier as well!

London Zone 2. Wash, cut and slightly cursory (but adequate for my length and style) blow-dry plus a bit of styling, £50. My salon has short and long hair pricing. I think that's quite good, although I do miss my mobile hairstylist who used to come to my house and only charged £25 Smile

Highlights

Under £60

My local hairdressers salon would charge exactly the same! I'm in Dorset. However, my hairdresser works from home in a converted garage. I have half a head of highlights, cut, blow dry and curled and it costs me £83. When I have a cut, blow dry and curled it's £33. I think what you're paying is probably fairly reasonable for the area. Prices vary greatly on the area you live.

Highlights, wash blow dry and great service, coffee, snacks, massage etc is about £220 for me I’m in the south east, so upwards of £150 in the bog standard salon here.

deeahgwitch · 01/05/2025 18:56

Half a head of highlights and lowlights and blow dry €129.

I need to find a hairdresser with a home salon. Standard rate for a salon wash, cut and blow dry here is £40-£50. I paid £120 at my last visit for cut and colour and didn’t even get a proper blow dry.

Balayage, cut, and blow-dry for £140 here in East Yorks.

camelfinger · 01/05/2025 19:04

It seems like the balayage is the thing that costs lots. To me, it look like someone put in a bit of Sun-In! Those were the days…

Can you be more specific because I’m paying £140 in West Yorkshire and would be happy to commute to save money.

I've messaged you

Half head highlights with Olaplex
Trim
Blow dry

= £145 in a naice salon
or £100 in a home salon

Northamptonshire

South East here and that's about right, although I haven't been to a hairdresser in years as it's extortionate. I need to go soon, our little village hairdresser is cheaper but there is a big difference in the quality of colour services to a 'in town' hairdresser. She is great with cuts though and is conveniently placed.
