Trainers for a funeral?

Can I get away with white trainers with a black dress at a funeral? Don’t really want to have to buy shoes that I’ll only wear once, but I will if it’s deemed disrespectful. Am not part of the immediate family, if that matters.

I’m a big fan of trainers with dressers and office wear so not at all against the look but white trainers for a funeral does seem a bit off sorry, can you borrow from a friend?

StarTwirl · 28/04/2025 12:34

Charity shop ?

Ihateslugs · 28/04/2025 12:34

You might be able to get away with black or navy trainers, white ones will really stand out.

Megifer · 28/04/2025 12:36

Black converse!

ShaunaSadeki · 28/04/2025 12:37

I don’t think so, and I wear trainers all the time.
Unless the deceased was a sneaker head?

Usernamesarenoteasy · 28/04/2025 12:38

I recently wore white trainers with a dress to a family members funeral.
I don't own shoes, and it didn't even cross my mind that I shouldn't.
No one was looking at my feet.....

mummyh2016 · 28/04/2025 12:39

You’ll be fine.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/04/2025 12:39

White trainers at a funeral are very in your face. Don’t you have any actual shoes or dark trainers?

Mudflaps · 28/04/2025 12:42

White trainers will be fine and unless you dance through the crowd kicking your legs up to show them off no one will even notice. Immediate family members usually dress in black but even that isn't always the case, you're wearing a black dress and that's enough.

WhyDoesItAlways · 28/04/2025 12:44

I'm a big fan of sneakers and usually an anything goes sort of person but I wouldn't wear white sneakers with a black dress to a funeral. I've worn black trainers with a white sole with long trousers to a funeral but they weren't noticeable.

I would go to primark and get a cheap pair of black pumps then stick them in the back of my wardrobe for other one off events like this.

Topseyt123 · 28/04/2025 12:46

I'd choose navy blue or black trainers personally. Though I am sure nobody will really be looking at your feet.

Baconsarnie · 28/04/2025 13:17

Thanks all. I think more people are against than pro, so I won’t. I will look at black flat form shoes with a white sole instead

I am sure the funeral arrangers have more to think about rather than be worrying about what a mourner wears. You are considerate enough to attend. I have never taken into consideration what people are wearing at all It is good of any person there to turn up at the end of the day.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/04/2025 17:47

Why with a white sole?

if you won’t really wear them again, Asda have black ballet pumps for £8. I’m sure other supermarkets will have some. Go cheap black flats that will get you through the day.

Bonbonvanilla · 28/04/2025 17:51

I pretty much live in trainers, I even have sparkly ones to wear with evening dresses amd don't care if they look naff but I won't for a funeral no.

I keep one pair of black formal shoes from way back when shoes were worn more, just for this purpose.

Shetlands · 28/04/2025 18:22

You say you don't want to buy something you'll never wear again but sadly, you'll probably attend other funerals in future so you might as well have some black shoes in the wardrobe that you just keep for those occasions.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/04/2025 19:07

My mum wore navy crocs to a funeral once. I was deeply embarrassed.

Do you want my username 😆

Ddakji · 28/04/2025 19:19

I bought some silver trainers to wear at the most recent funeral I went to.

And I think I may have worn trainers to my mum’s funeral. I’ve certainly worn them to a wedding.

Why? Sounds like a good idea to me - sombre colour but comfortable.

Surroundedbyfools · 28/04/2025 19:24

Yes I think it’s absolutely fine. Someone has died no one is interested in what shoes ur wearing tbh. At my fathers funeral I don’t even think I’d have noticed if ppl were in fancy dress

Hallywally · 28/04/2025 20:04

You must surely have some form of shoe that is darker- black/navy/brown? White trainer seems an odd choice. Is that your only pair of shoes?

I agree with this. I’ve got some really cheap flat Mary Janes from Shoe Zone that I used to wear for work, I’ve worn them to the last couple of funerals I’ve attended.

Babyghirl · 28/04/2025 23:13

I have a funeral tomorrow, I'm not even wearing black tbh, think black is not all that for funerals anymore, more people are wearing colour at them.

I have other trainers (green, orange), Birkenstock-style sandals, and black and brown boots. I also have heels in my wardrobe but I haven’t worn any since 2020.

The white sole is because I don’t like all black trainers. I would wear ones with a white sole again though.
