Do you wear makeup/nice clothes if you know you’re not going out

There are days I spend at home or just go for a walk and I wear joggers, hoodie and no make up. These days I always look in the mirror and think how awful I look which gets me down but I also don’t see the point in wearing nice clothes and wasting make up when there’s no one to see it. What do you do? Should I make more of an effort to feel better?

I wear make up every day. I love it and I love experimenting, trying new looks, new colours, new techniques. I wouldn’t waste an opportunity to put some nice make up on just because I wasn’t going out! I put it on for me not anybody else.

Clothes vary depending on what I’ll be doing at home, eg gardening or cleaning will mean older clothes, but otherwise I’ll wear what I fancy, which might be jeans or might be a dress or skirt.

greengreyblue · 27/04/2025 07:09

I always shower, do my skin and makeup- might be minimal but I still do it. I style my hair too. I might put jeans and a t shirt on. If I am just getting up to walk the dog I might put joggers and and hoodie on but then I’ll change when I get home.

DinoLil · 27/04/2025 07:15

I never go anywhere so don't always dress smart but do always put make up on. The day I don't is the day my neighbour knocks the door for an hour long chat on the doorstep or the day I bump into a glam friend on the dog walk!

MsBette · 27/04/2025 07:18

Makeup every day for me. Even if I’m having a day in my pyjamas. Shower, hair and makeup.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 27/04/2025 07:22

I never owned joggers until about 2 years ago when I was quite poorly with possible pneumonia and only had jeans and pyjamas to wear. It made me realise that sometimes I don't want to wear jeans, and pyjamas are just for bed.

After the gym yesterday I had a shower and put my joggers on as I knew I wasn't going anywhere but those are the only times that I wear joggers.

Unless I'm ill I go out everyday - fresh casual clothes, lipstick and a quick spray of perfume.

@sunshinedaises There is some one there to see it though, you. Why do you think you are not worth wearing nice things for? Wearing clothes and/or make up that makes you feel good about yourself is not wasteful, quite the opposite in fact.

I go out several times every day, there's no way I'm going through all that faff every time I leave the house.

EleanorReally · 27/04/2025 08:22

no, but then i always go out, even if for a dog walk

You do it once, in the morning when you get dressed. Reapplying lipstick is a coulple of seconds .

MidnightMeltdown · 28/04/2025 00:38

I have ‘working from home clothes’ which consist of easy to maintain items like joggers, leggings and sweatshirts. However, I rarely wear these clothes out of the house. Even if I pop to the shop to buy a pint of milk I will change out of joggers.

The clothes that I wear when I’m going into the office, or out with friends, tend to be things that need to be hand washed and/or ironed (e.g. silk blouses, dresses, cashmere jumpers etc). I don’t wear these at home because I can’t be arsed with the constant washing and ironing and maintenance more than any other reason.

ensale · 28/04/2025 00:54

I shower and wear light make up every day, as I go out every day (dcs to take on school run, or to take them out at weekends/school holidays). I think there have just a few days in their lives when we haven't been out (dcs were ill) and then I still got myself ready for going out in case they felt better and wanted to go out, or if I needed to go out to get them anything.

I wear joggers and a fleece at home but I change into other clothes for going out, not nice clothes, just jeans and a top usually, but a bit less casual than joggers. I always change into joggers when I'm in for the evening.

Hell no, I live in my PJs.

I was looking for this comment! Same.

I wish I looked less ill without make up. I’m really too lazy to worry if I’m just at home but the effort does pay dividends. I don’t need much, just enough to take the edge off.

I agree other people don’t bat an eyelid so it’s just for my own benefit. Obviously you can argue well is it for your benefit or has society groomed you to look a certain way but either way that’s where I am.

I resonate with the whole looking-ill-without-makeup thing. Until I’ve put my slap on of a morning I look like a prawn summer roll in translucent rice paper.

It takes a remarkable amount of effort just to make my skin decently opaque.

Floisme · 28/04/2025 06:05

I always wear nice clothes - well I think they’re nice, you may not. If I’m at home they might not be my smartest, fanciest clothes but they still give me pleasure. I enjoy getting dressed and thinking about what to wear whether anyone’s going to see me or not. But in any case there are very few days when I don’t go out at all.

Make-up, no I’m not interested.

soccermum10 · 28/04/2025 06:21

No. If I'm not going out I let my skin breathe - no makeup. As for clothes I prefer comfy, oversized T Shirt and jogging bottoms. Don't see the point in dressing up if I'm not leaving the house.

Phoebepeeby · 28/04/2025 06:23

Mostly I like to look nice regardless of where I’m going because I dress up for me not for others.

Should I make more of an effort to feel better? I think you should! I remember when I had my first baby my mum's advice to me was to always get myself up and dressed first thing and put some make up on so I was ready for anything - even just answering the front door. I definitely feel better when I look better. To be honest, it's such a reflex now I don't even think about it - that's just how I look! Why wouldn't you want to look your best? Jeans, stripey top, white trainers and a navy or ecru mac is about as casual as I go and I would never go out without my lipstick on (or without a nice manicure if I'm honest!)

This. I don't own joggers. I don't jog.

I do it for me.

Poor pitch. Reported.

I only ever go out to go to the shop and I would feel over-dressed wearing anything nice there so I just wear sweatshirt and joggers. It would be nice to wear something nice but I would feel daft. I always see people I know and they would ask where I was going if I was dressed nicely. Then I would have to explain that I was only going to the shop and then back home. Same with make up. I shower every day. You can wear bad clothes without being unhygienic!

LillyPJ · 28/04/2025 07:03

Never! I never wear makeup even if I am going out and my 'nice' clothes probably don't seem that great to most people. I hate having to get dressed up. (I don't think I'm scruffy though, and I don't slop around the house in pyjamas or tracksuit bottoms etc )

Tumblingthrough · 28/04/2025 07:07

I wear nice casual clothing. Always minimal makeup unless I’m going out, out. Eyeliner and lip balm only.
I wear colours that suit me and tbh, although I’m old, I never feel I look rough!

There's a whole wealth of clothes between joggers and dressed up.

I'd never where joggers out, even to the shops. In the morning I put on jeans and a tshirt/jumper, and make up (sometimes I don't bother with makeup if I don't intend to go anywhere, but I'll always wear jeans).

Parker231 · 28/04/2025 10:32

I would always shower and wash my hair but rarely wear makeup, home or out.

For a day mainly at home I’d wear leggings and a T-shirt and the same for nipping out to the gym, for a run or to the shops.

A day going out for the whole day or out for lunch, I’d wear jeans, white trainers and T-shirt/hoodie.
