Do you wear makeup/nice clothes if you know you’re not going out

There are days I spend at home or just go for a walk and I wear joggers, hoodie and no make up. These days I always look in the mirror and think how awful I look which gets me down but I also don’t see the point in wearing nice clothes and wasting make up when there’s no one to see it. What do you do? Should I make more of an effort to feel better?

I recently started putting a bit of tinted moisturiser on, some tinted brown gel, and a tinted lip balm worry day even if I'm not leaving the house. Been about a month since I made this little change and I feel so much happier. Even if my hair is in a scruffy bun and I'm wearing my lounge wear, I feel happier with a bit on my face...

In turn this has also forced me into cleansing and toning etc every night (not ashamed to admit i skipped this too often in the last year - motherhood). This has also made me feel much better as my skin is slowly getting back to what it once was.

Im never going back to neglecting my skin ever again! X

If I wasn't going out and not expecting to see anyone I wouldn't put make up on but most days I'll be going to the shops, school run or even have a zoom call and my minimum is concealer under my eyes and mascara plus brows.

I also like to wear comfy clothes like joggers or leggings at home but change into proper trousers or jeans to go out.

BangingOn · 26/04/2025 22:27

I do have home clothes that I wear to relax in. I change into them after work if I’m WFH and when I get home from anywhere else. I’ve invested in some nice loungewear though so I don’t look scruffy whilst feeling comfortable.

If I am not going out then I just do my usual skincare, a bit of under eye concealer, groom brows and apply tinted lip balm. My skin is pretty good since using Tretinoin and I have my lashes lifted and tinted, so I’m happy with how I look without proper makeup.

crouchendtigerr · 26/04/2025 23:16

I very rarely wear makeup these days, so a rare day for me is putting it on. I do try to dress properly and make sure my hair looks ok. But my standards are quite low, and I have a very large selection of hats

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/04/2025 23:36

I wear light foundation / coloured moisturiser / bb cream every day as my skin tone is uneven.

I’m retired and have quite a few days where I only leave the house to walk the dog so I tend to spend a lot of time in joggers / T shirt / hoody. I like to wear something that’s comfortable and my nicer clothes last longer that way.

TheOGCCL · 26/04/2025 23:39

I wish I looked less ill without make up. I’m really too lazy to worry if I’m just at home but the effort does pay dividends. I don’t need much, just enough to take the edge off.

I agree other people don’t bat an eyelid so it’s just for my own benefit. Obviously you can argue well is it for your benefit or has society groomed you to look a certain way but either way that’s where I am.

I never wear make up, but do wear nice clothes is going to work or a night out. But not if staying at home. Love just being comfortable and relaxed

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/04/2025 23:52

I’m on or off. Makeup and nice clothes for out and about, joggers and sweatshirts and no makeup for home. The exception is wfh when I wear proper clothes and makeup - I wouldn’t feel right otherwise.

I always shower and wash my hair even if I am having a day at home though.

DelphiniumBlue · 26/04/2025 23:53

I normally wear joggers or yoga pants indoors, but nice ones, with a t shirt, sweatshirt or hoody, or a big roll neck jumper if it’s cold. But they are not old, stained ones, and are in colours that suit me.
I might put on a quick pencil eyeliner when I get up, but maybe not. I do have my lashes and brows dyed, so am not completely au naturel! I use tinted lip balm throughout the day whatever I’m doing. I like to look fresh and bright, and that adds a touch of colour.
I like to wear long dresses, but they are not practical on days when I’m up and down the stairs a lot with my hands full, so I tend to wear them more when I’m done with chores, or going out.

WinterFoxes · 26/04/2025 23:59

I nearly always wear makeup, even though I work from home and often see no one all day long.

I love make up. As a very pale skinned person with pale lashes, I look sickly and tired without it. It takes 5 mins or less to put on mascara, eyeshadow, brow gel, concealer, lipstick and some light foundation.

foreverblowingbubbless · 27/04/2025 00:12

If I'm going to be at home I will only use my various moisturisers, retinol etc. Hair will be washed if needed but not blown dry or styled as usual.

Mumsgirls · 27/04/2025 00:20

Make up every day as part of morning. Needed if in garden as foundation has sun protection. Clothes have special house stuff , but good clothes outside even if only local shop

NPET · 27/04/2025 00:28

Make-up if I'm going to work or out for the evening. Otherwise a quick brush of the hair, blusher, and earrings. Jeans or cords and whatever top isn't in the washing machine.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 27/04/2025 01:17

I don’t have “ comfies” leggings, joggers etc as they feel too saggy to me.
I always wear jeans whether I’m in or going out in the evening.
My make up bag is underneath the mirror next to the front door so i apply before I leave. Just moisturiser and lip balm otherwise.

Daffodilsarefading · 27/04/2025 01:24

I wear nice clothes and make up if I’m going out. This includes going to work, to see friends, out for lunch etc.
I don’t wear make up on the days I go straight to the gym then do the gardening, for a walk, do the housework etc. I also wear either gym clothes or joggers/shorts plus t-shirt.

NattyTurtle59 · 27/04/2025 05:04

I don't wear makeup even if I am going out! I also just wear whatever I have on at the time if I'm going for a walk, to the shops etc. People I see are wearing all sorts of clothing, no-one really cares.

BusterGonad · 27/04/2025 05:27

I wear smart clothes for work, shirt, trousers etc and always make up, maybe contacts. Weekends I wear jeans, t shirt, knitwear no make up and no contacts. Meeting friends I'll put more effort in and wear my nice clothes, make up and contact lenses. I never blow dry my hair so that's always easy.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/04/2025 06:04

I no longer wear makeup.

terracelane23 · 27/04/2025 06:11

I don’t own any make up so that’s a no. I wear jeans and jumpers the vast majority of the time no matter what I’m doing.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 27/04/2025 06:14

I wear a little bit of make up even if I'm not going out. I wear it for me, not other people, and I enjoy the process of applying it. I also wear a little spray of perfume every day, too.

Tropizienne · 27/04/2025 06:30

I can’t believe how I would never leave the house without foundation, mascara & being v groomed. If I didn’t wear perfume I felt undressed!! Now the more makeup I wear the worse it looks - accentuates wrinkles etc & I just can’t be bothered to take mascara off every pm. So it’s just tinted moisturiser, blusher & lip balm but only if leaving the house. Still like a spritz of something but has to be light & not cloying or heavy as meno nose can’t cope with it!

nottheplan · 27/04/2025 06:40

Yes I wear makeup every day and dress in something I like daily. Not very fashionable things , just a fleece and jeans. No gym leggings or anything unless I'm exercising. Not that there's anything wrong with them either, I just wouldn't wear them with makeup 😊

nobodywantsit · 27/04/2025 06:46

If I’m not going out then I don’t put any make-up on. I wear make up daily for work etc but I cleanse and moisturize and give my skin a break if no-one’s seeing me.

I don’t wear jeans, dresses etc at home. I have lounge wear and joggers that I’d never go out in.
When I come home I change straightaway to be comfortable.

ChewbaccasMrs · 27/04/2025 06:51

I only wear make up if I'm going out of the house but I always wear nice clothes,I wear dresses mainly, sometimes I'll wear a skirt and top.

growinguptobreakingdown · 27/04/2025 07:02

I would say I'm low maintenance but maybe I'm not.I don't always wear make up but I did when I was working. It's not uncommon for me to just apply foundation , blush and mascara as it takes 2 mins. I own a pair of joggers for the gardening/ painting but not for general wear. I can look put together with jeans, t shirt, earrings and blazer and that's what I'd wear to do the shopping. At home it's easy to throw on a dress/skirt and jumper. I do yoga most days and I have leggings, vests and tops which all look pretty good. I shower and change out of them once done though.I would very rarely get in my pyjamas after this - I might need to take the teens somewhere or walk the dog .It makes me feel better to dress nicely and it really doesn't take any effort.
