Chanel Bag selling disappointment

Kittyberry · 26/04/2025 09:01

Just feeling a bit fed up as I need to downsize and clear the decks..
I have a pristine (used on 2 occasion) medium/large classic flap Chanel - black Caviar with silver hardware - bag. Gift from DH a few years ago and it is stunning but I really don’t use it. It is still in the box, ribbons, dust bag, and all ID though not the receipt.

I have tried all the ‘agencies’ who sell it for you, and the best price from each is literally half of what I could sell it directly for ! Half !
I just can’t bring myself to let it go for that knowing that it will then be double that for them to sell.

I have looked at Vinted and EBay who could be used but, and this is my worry, if someone bid and purchased it then it needs to be sent to a 3rd party for verification and authentication - and there lies the problem…. How do I know they won’t regard it as a fake and send me back a copy and pocket my
original! Equally, if an individual did buy it direct, they could also do the same : essentially once it leaves my possession anything could happen ! I honestly don’t know how to get round this as I appreciate there is so much doubt and worry about copy’s and I am unlikely to find anyone to buy it directly.

So do I suck it up and accept half the ‘value’ from a consignment agency?

FWIW it would be a 10k bag now from Chanel and I have been offered 3.5k from nearly every agency and I would be happy with 6.5k.

Maybe the bird in the hand is better than the two in the bush but it is so sticking in the throat to let it go and it’s a perfect, as new bag!!!

Equally I absolutely need some funds and alot depends on a boost of this sort. I most certainly won’t be spending it on myself ….

What to do?
Any thoughts welcome ….

Presumably your DH has the certification that it’s genuine

and what and where he paid for it

so should be no problem

Matildahoney · 26/04/2025 09:08

Where was it bought from, often with an individual store they sign you up so will have record of it being bought, or DH will have it on a bank statement if you know when he purchased it. You may be able to get a copy from the company. Or take it where he purchased it and see if they'll provide authentication rather than a 3rd party company.

Mirrorxxx · 26/04/2025 09:11

You don’t get 6.5k for it. You could consign with somewhere like sellier Knightsbridge but you’ll probably only get 4500-5000

PlatinumBrunette · 26/04/2025 09:14

Try Vestiare Collective. It was the best place to sell Chanel. Not sure what it’s like post Brexit, but it was straightforward, simple and good prices.

Moowho · 26/04/2025 09:24

I sold mine with Xupes consignment service. They take a percentage but it was worth it and hassle free.

Sadly I lost DH 2 years ago. I have hunted through all paperwork etc but can’t locate. He may have bought it abroad as he often travelled to Asia for work - or in London, but as it was a surprise thing and indeed a huge treat at the time, I just don’t know where he purchased. I have enquired at Chanel directly but they weren’t helpful and implied they don’t offer an authentication service

Hi @Kittyberry sorry if this is obvious and you've already done it, but have you looked inside the inside pocket of the bag for authentication cards etc?

Also, I would second Vestiaire Collective to try and sell it yourself (incurring minimal fees for the seller too).

Yes I do have the authentication card and in fact everything except the receipt …DH no longer with me so I can’t check this.

This is a more realistic value.

LuannDe · 26/04/2025 09:59

I sold all of my luxury bags last year on Vestiare Collective. Very straightforward and legitimate, and I highly recommend their authentication service. It all ran really smoothly and I earned very reasonable prices for the bags (Chanel, Celine, Saint Laurent and Fendi).

Energe · 26/04/2025 10:45

Do not sell it on vinted

SwanOfThoseThings · 26/04/2025 10:49

How do I know they won’t regard it as a fake and send me back a copy and pocket my original! Equally, if an individual did buy it direct, they could also do the same : essentially once it leaves my possession anything could happen !

That is the risk you would be paying a selling agency to take.

Loopytiles · 26/04/2025 10:53

You’ve outlined your choices, and the pros/cons - now choose one of the options and progress with it!

Naughtipidgin’s Nest did a great job for me. Weird name, but very professional and reasonable

Well not exactly, because it has been authenticated by them - before making an offer to me...Ive had the same type of price offer for direct payment, but most is 4k.

I guess I have just got to get past the fact that they will sell it on.....for 8k+ as I have seen the website and can see this is usually the price for a near new bag of that model.

I realise there is just more confidence for a buyer when going through a reputable agency as opposed to an individual. I suppose this is just the way it is....perhaps I can just bequeath it when the time comes to one of the DS's.

I havent looked yet at the Auction potential but am again assuming there are alot of commisions and fees. But thanks for contributions.

There is a Chanel Buy and Sell group on FB that might be worth a look?

Sorry for your loss 😔

I would be worried if it was purchased in Asia originally, that it was a very good fake.

LondonPapa · 26/04/2025 11:10

Second hand market would be £6.5k at one of the resellers, you’d get £5k, maybe £5.5k. Love Luxury is good.

Yes, agree with NPN.
I’ve bought bags from Shian (including a Chanel) and wouldn’t hesitate to sell my bags through her.
Have you enquired with her?

It’s not fake just because it was bought in Asia 🙄OP has the certificate and everything!

Thank you. Life is quite different now and I much preferred the old one...

I have had the bag authenticated - by one of the bigger sales agencies in London, and it has a serial number etc thats been checked, so I do know it is genuine. DH did buy me earrings from Chanel in central Hong Kong previously, and if it did come direct from there (Asia) then Im pretty comfortable it was authentic. But I do know what you mean.

I’d also recommend Shian at Npn - I’ve both purchased and sold through her and it was very easy.

PiggyPigalle · 26/04/2025 11:43

There's also Prestige Pawnbrokers, from the television series. They will give an estimate over the phone. Tell them you want 6k?

Auction house?

MoominMai · 26/04/2025 11:53

OP perhaps you could offer a ‘collect in person’ as there may be nearby buyers who would be happy to buy but have concerns themselves whether it’s fake or not. If they do collect there should be no possibility of a fraud claim thereafter by the very fact they were happy to leave with item upon inspection. For safety you could do the transaction from a nearby coffee place or some such and perhaps drop the price a tad to allow for peoples travelling costs?
