Chanel Bag selling disappointment

Kittyberry · 26/04/2025 09:01

Just feeling a bit fed up as I need to downsize and clear the decks..
I have a pristine (used on 2 occasion) medium/large classic flap Chanel - black Caviar with silver hardware - bag. Gift from DH a few years ago and it is stunning but I really don’t use it. It is still in the box, ribbons, dust bag, and all ID though not the receipt.

I have tried all the ‘agencies’ who sell it for you, and the best price from each is literally half of what I could sell it directly for ! Half !
I just can’t bring myself to let it go for that knowing that it will then be double that for them to sell.

I have looked at Vinted and EBay who could be used but, and this is my worry, if someone bid and purchased it then it needs to be sent to a 3rd party for verification and authentication - and there lies the problem…. How do I know they won’t regard it as a fake and send me back a copy and pocket my
original! Equally, if an individual did buy it direct, they could also do the same : essentially once it leaves my possession anything could happen ! I honestly don’t know how to get round this as I appreciate there is so much doubt and worry about copy’s and I am unlikely to find anyone to buy it directly.

So do I suck it up and accept half the ‘value’ from a consignment agency?

FWIW it would be a 10k bag now from Chanel and I have been offered 3.5k from nearly every agency and I would be happy with 6.5k.

Maybe the bird in the hand is better than the two in the bush but it is so sticking in the throat to let it go and it’s a perfect, as new bag!!!

Equally I absolutely need some funds and alot depends on a boost of this sort. I most certainly won’t be spending it on myself ….

What to do?
Any thoughts welcome ….

I had it with a Mulberry bag I sold on Ebay everything bar the receipt which I had lost. Verification sent it back as unproven as they were not prepered to stick their necks out. I have other Mulberry reeceipts I have considered faking one - just to get rid of it once and for all.

LucyMonth · 26/04/2025 11:58

One thing to remember when you are looking at the prices agencies sell that particular bag for is the year it was manufactured.

If yours is only a few years old it won’t be as valuable as one from 15 years ago ironically. This is because the cost of a new bag has went up while the quality has went down.

I’d pay a lot more for a 15 year old lightly used Chanel than I would for an almost never used couple of years old Chanel. Gold hardware is also much more popular than silver so resells much better.

Vestaire Collectives verification system is fantastic.

Mulberry is so difficult to authenticate because they don’t have consistent standards. They used to make all their bags in the UK but now only 30% are with the rest coming from China and Turkey. Some bags have serial numbers, others don’t etc. Having a receipt gives the verifier a year to go off so they can compare against expected Mulberry standards for that year. This isn’t so much of a problem for other brands.

savory · 26/04/2025 12:03

Could you have it professionally cleaned by Chanel? They obviously won't handle fakes, so if they accept it, you'll receive a cleaned and authenticated bag, along with a receipt.

What did you send to verification that was rejected as unproven?

Oh then I am totally with this failing the verification check!!

this doesn’t remotely prove it is genuine

I mean you can buy off ebay a dust bag and shopping bag!

I suspect Mulberry can tell the difference but some generic checker at Ebay just doesn't want to take the risk. Have just checked they offer a bag cleaning service as well which is roundabout autheticating. Light cleaning is done in-store.

But you hadn’t got verification from mulberry!

I know I'm thinking out loud how to try and sell it again as I really want to get rid of it. The offer on ebay was £450 and ebay would take 12.8%

My point is

i can completely understand why it failed the verification check

MondayYogurt · 26/04/2025 12:33

OP Try posting on The Purse Forum/Chanel.
https://forum.purseblog.com/forums/chanel.18/

There are some amazing experts on there, and I believe they changed the rules to allow selling in the last few years.

@savory You can also get Mulberry informally authenticated in that brand’s section - at least last time I checked.

Lailatov · 26/04/2025 12:40

OP I haven’t seen any second hand Chanel flap bags go for more than £6k for while. Usually they seem to go for between £4k and £5k. It depends on the bag style and colour combination/ condition. I’ve had good experiences selling with Arm Candy Bag Co. You may get the best price on eBay and from what I’ve heard they are quite good if anything goes wrong. Make sure you evidence everything - take videos of the bag in detail and packing it up. I don’t completely trust the eBay authentication service, I once sold a YSL bag and they came back saying it was fake. I purchased direct from the store but didn’t have the receipt anymore. I’ve since sold elsewhere and I had no issue. Good luck with your sale.

Matildahoney
Sadly I lost DH 2 years ago. I have hunted through all paperwork etc but can’t locate. He may have bought it abroad as he often travelled to Asia for work - or in London, but as it was a surprise thing and indeed a huge treat at the time, I just don’t know where he purchased. I have enquired at Chanel directly but they weren’t helpful and implied they don’t offer an authentication service

Edited

So sorry to hear this, I feel your pain, 8 years for me this year.
That's really poor of Chanel! I'd expect better customer service from them for the amount they charge.
I bought mine from a local jeweller that sells bags, is there anywhere near you like that.? I paid around 5k for a 30 year old one!
What @savory said about getting it cleaned and a receipt for that at least might be worth a go.
Any future DIL would be happy to receive a vintage Chanel I'm sure, but if you need the money that's more important.

CuttedPearPie · 26/04/2025 12:54

I don't understand why you're miffed about this? You didn't spend money on this, your DH did.
You had a bag you liked for a while (?) and now will have £4K in your pocket. There's been zero cost to you.

Just get on and sell it!

AddictedtoCrunchies · 26/04/2025 13:02

Im sorry for your loss.

The way I look at selling stuff on is that it's not earning me anything sitting in the cupboard. Thre money used to buy it is gone. Spent. I cant influence that amount. So anything I do get is a bonus.

It doesn't matter if it was 10k or 20k, if you can get 4.5k back then that's 4.5k more than you've got now with an unused bag in your wardrobe.

abricotine · 26/04/2025 11:16

It’s not fake just because it was bought in Asia 🙄OP has the certificate and everything!

@abricotine You are aware how easy it is to buy fakes with faked certificates in Asia? 🙄

it isn’t off the street like here. There are very sophisticated shops behind the real shop fronts selling anything you like. “OP has a certificate and everything!” 🤣 🤣

I used to live there. Guess you’ve never been.

I’m sorry for your loss, and can imagine how difficult it is to part with something your husband bought for you with love

i hope it all works out x

Thats really kind, thank you. He did buy it with love and I was very lucky to have been given some lovely things. To be honest, I have struggled with parting with quite alot, but needs must at the moment. I just don't live the life now where I would use such a bag, and would give everything away for nothing if I could have him back. Id' just be grateful for one more day.

Ooh, looks like this had been reintroduced. I asked in store c18 months ago and was told they had stopped their cleaning service and even if I had the hardware replaced, the bag wouldn't be cleaned.

Energe · 26/04/2025 10:45

Do not sell it on vinted

Ditto as well as EBay!

LaurieFairyCake · 26/04/2025 14:59

How about loveluxury.com - dead famous on Tik tok, mostly sell Hermes but they will give you a price online with photos etc

Hephebe · 26/04/2025 15:11

So sorry for your loss OP ❤️ and I hope you find a sensible way to sort out selling your bag.

This thread has been helpful for me - I have a vintage Dior bag sitting in a wardrobe that's hardly ever been used, but I don't think I have the auth card or dust bag - I didn't realise you could still get it authenticated. I've just googled and Vestiaire have the same one going for over a grand!!

bumblebee1000 · 26/04/2025 15:26

I sold an unwanted LV bag on ebay, arranged to meet the buyer at the LV store in bond st to verify it and then buyer paid the funds, took 3 mins for them to check the bag. It was an unwanted gift and never used. Also friend had a perfect copy LV bag , high end from Turkey, the same LV shop repaired it and commented upon how nice it was and never noticed it was a fake as some are absolutely perfect now with correct serial numbers etc.
