Is there such a thing as a classic wardrobe or capsule wardrobe or do things just date in your view. I would love to have a stylish classic wardrobe but i can't help thinking style changes ever so slightly. For me, my oldest thing is a Maxmara camel coat which was spendy and 15 years later is still lovely but a bit ... i don't know ...dated!

Nicole Farhi Tshirt I bought in a sale in 1990. Definite second best item now but ok.

Have a 20 year old Harris tweed jumper which is still absolutely as new and probably will last me out. I wear it every winter and have washed it about half a dozen times. It drives the cat wild with its itchy thickness.

Things go out of fashion and come into fashion again. The oldest item in my wardrobe that I still wear is a black Mondi jacket I bought for a funeral in 1991. It's cropped and boxy, so there have been years I haven't worn it. It's still in good condition, perhaps because I've taken good care of it; getting it dry cleaned regularly.

I have a Breton top that I bought in Brittany 25 years ago.

Don’t wear it much these days as its so ubiquitous but every now and then it feels right.

Madamblueshoes · 08/03/2025 17:24

Yes you are right about things going in and out of fashion! I think I'm going to hang on to all my more costly items in future. I have recycled things in the past and wished i kept hold of them ... funnily enough shoes. You think kitten heels are done and bam! back they come round agai .

I have a Pashmina from 2001 that I still always use for travelling.

Britpopbaby · 08/03/2025 17:39

A Topshop bag that was a cheaper/similar version of a Jigsaw bag twenty plus years ago.

A Whistles scarf that I have had 15 plus years.

SiobahnRoy · 08/03/2025 17:42

A silvery grey knitted zip up hooded cardigan from Morgan that I bought before I met my husband. It’s our silver wedding anniversary this summer.

Katieweasel · 08/03/2025 17:51

French Connection denim jacket circa 2002. Makes a reappearance every couple of years.

ginasevern · 08/03/2025 17:53

An M&S black velvet jacket I bought in 1975 and a burgundy coloured Biba dress I bought in 1973. Both size 10, both still fit, although the "model" has changed somewhat.

Jorvik1978 · 08/03/2025 17:54

A pair of wide leg, dark grey, wool mix trousers from M&S circa 1998.

NicolaCasanova · 08/03/2025 17:55

A friend posted a photo on Fb a few days ago a tb to 10 years ago and when I saw the photo I was putting the top in the washing machine that I am wearing in the photo…and it wasn’t new then! Just a long sleeved cotton t-shirt from Zara.

I popped to my mums today and she has a country casuals shirt in brilliant 80s patterns. So glad she has it. Reminds me of my childhood.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/03/2025 18:08

I have a pair of shorts which mum brought me when I was 13 (20ish years ago)they're Bermuda style and have grown with me. Really tatty but still ok for the garden and dog walks.

Jealous!

I still have several things I wore as a teen and in my early 20s that I still wear regularly.
I'm mid 50s.

Some things I still have but can't fit into any more, DD now wears. She's the age and size now that I was then

AelitaQueenofMars · 08/03/2025 18:16

I have a 1930-ish bias-cut satin dress that I found scrunched up in a trunk when I was doing work experience at an auctioneers in 1990, and they let me keep. The chiffon number I found alongside it I wore (diwn the pub mostly!) until it shredded. DD has now discovered it and it’s still going strong!

I bought a heavy crepe classic maxi shirt-dress in BHS in around 1993 that I still wear to work. Looks almost as good as brand-new. Big-brand items really were made well back then.

My Mum wore Country Casuals too! Along with Jaeger and Viyella it was a go-to range for her workwear.

mynamechangemyrules · 08/03/2025 18:18

T shirt my mum wore when she was pregnant with my brother (we have a lovely pic of her in it).
He will be 50 soon 🤣
It's Clothkits (if anyone else remembers that?!) lovely pure cotton, bright pattern and has survived every changing fashion.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 08/03/2025 18:20

1983, real leather / sheepskin flying jacket, from M& S, albeit their factory shop in Northumberland, £30, whilst on holiday. I then saw it a couple of month's later, in the Marble Arch store for £99! Still wear it.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 08/03/2025 18:24

I’m using WLI and I fit into a really nice Classic M&S mac for the first time in about 15 years, I’m so pleased about it that I wore it today but it was so warm I had to leave it in the car. It will hopefully have more of an outing soon.

Madamblueshoes · 08/03/2025 18:40

Some lovely recollections here! Memories and clothing intertwined. And aah, country casuals. I remember them fondly.

A Next denim jacket from 2018 that I wore today.
H&M cashmere jumper from 2017 that’s still a regular.

Gundogday · 08/03/2025 18:46

I have a tshirt I brought in 2008 from Sainsbury. We were moving house and the removal company packed my overnight bag into the van.

Thinking about it, have some jumpers purchased before the move.

Also have a sundress from when my mother was a teen but doesn’t fit me at present.

henlake7 · 08/03/2025 18:53

A regatta fleece jacket that is 34 yrs old. I wear it to work every winter.

TBH most of my oldest stuff isn't the fashionable things.....it's the comfy or practical gear.

Princessfluffy · 08/03/2025 19:04

My mum still wears the PJs I bought to give birth in 26 years ago and both her and my auntie still wear some benetton jumpers that I had as a teenager 40 years ago. They have my name tapes in from school 😂.
