What are the oldest items in your wardrobe that you still regularly wear?

Is there such a thing as a classic wardrobe or capsule wardrobe or do things just date in your view. I would love to have a stylish classic wardrobe but i can't help thinking style changes ever so slightly. For me, my oldest thing is a Maxmara camel coat which was spendy and 15 years later is still lovely but a bit ... i don't know ...dated!

I've said this before in here, but I still have and wear most days, a gorgeous red/pink rose patterned chiffon-type dressing gown that I bought from La Senza in the late 80s for my honeymoon! I've had two more husbands since then, which proves that dressing gowns are essential and long-lasting, whilst husbands are not 🥰🤣

Princessfluffy · 08/03/2025 19:12

My Asda dressing gown is still going strong from 2005

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/03/2025 19:16

I've gradually gone from a size 10 to a 16 so a lot of my old clothes don't fit but I have a navy wool aquascutum coat that DH bought for me in 1994 that I have worn for formal occasions or going on on cold days and nights ever since. It is a classic shape and I still love wearing it. I also have a Barbour from 1992 which has seen better days but works for dog walking and gardening still.

MumonabikeE5 · 08/03/2025 19:21

I wear my mothers maternity dresses routinely now (after falling for them in my first maternity)
I wear a shirt that my mum wore before having kids
I wear a red leather jacket I bought when I started working for gap in 1997
Until last year I wore lots of clothes esp jeans that I bought in my uni days, but perimenopause had made me fat.

I also hardly buy anything and everyday clothes are worn until they are shredded beyond repair

A Black long sleeved square neck Biba Tshirt with the Biba logo on in silver. I bought on a school trip to London in 1973.. l was 15 years old.
Doesn't fit me.. size 8.. but I've kept it.

grafittiartist · 08/03/2025 19:51

A couple of dresses that my grandmother made.
Probably on the 60's. I wear them both occasionally.

ladygindiva · 08/03/2025 19:58

Levi 501s . About 15 years old.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/03/2025 20:03

A denim jacket that’s around 10 years old. I’ve lot a fair bit of weight since then so I think it might get replaced this summer.

I really wish I’d kept hold of a suede jacket that made its way to the charity shop around 15 years ago. It was expensive, but it was too small for me then and I didn’t think I’d ever wear it again. It would fit now though, and would work perfectly with my wardrobe these days.

Latenightreader · 08/03/2025 20:04

My beloved X Files t-shirt was relegated to a pyjama top some years ago but still makes me smile everything I wear it. A few of my other teenage t-shirts are similarly nightwear.

I have two woollen skirts from the St Michael days of M&S (these are 80s I think). They belonged to my mother and I wear them every winter.

I have a black wonderbra I bought in Canada in December 1995...

Blonzer · 08/03/2025 20:08

An original Chelsea Girl t-shirt that belonged to my Mum
A top I bought from M&S in late 80's early 90's which has St Michael printed on the label.
A black bias cut skirt from John Lewis in the 90's
A Wham Choose Life t-shirt from the 80s

LaurieFairyCake · 08/03/2025 20:26

1890's white top with white work on it (very fine white embroidery)

1920's shoes

About 10 1930's dresses

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 08/03/2025 20:31

YSL sunglasses from 1990.
A fabulous pair of Russell & Bromley gladiators from the same year.
Have a few bits of clothing from then but they don’t fit!
Accessories do though!

GOODCAT · 08/03/2025 20:33

I still wear a horse riding top on a very regular basis that my mum gave me in my teens. I am now in my 50s. I also still have a t shirt my Dad got me when I was 20 which I still wear but infrequently.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/03/2025 00:02

I have a couple of coats from the 1990s, my 'best coat' which I rarely wear now and a walking jacket. I think they must have been pretty loose when I had them as I'm at least a couple of sizes larger now. I've got various shoes/boots I've had for ages but none of my clothes are more than 10 or so years old as I've put weight on/changed shape.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/03/2025 00:07

I have a black linen dress that I bought from Monsoon in 2004 that I still wear.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/03/2025 00:13

Actually I have a T shirt which I wore to travel on a few holidays in the mid-2000s, initially as a coincidence but I then named it my lucky T shirt and wear it every time I fly. I've had to repurpose it as a waistcoat as it no longer fits me but I do still wear it every time I get on a plane!

PinkArt · 09/03/2025 00:16

A black slash neck jumper from Bay Trading, bought in the late 90s. Somehow it has fitted when I was both a 12 and an 18.

Melassa · 09/03/2025 10:26

I have a Miss Selfridge skirt from the 80s, bought in the sale, it’s a size 12 but fits snugly now (I’m an 8-10 in today’s sizes). I also have a ton of clothes from the 90s, which my DD has plundered. I’ve put on a bit of weight so much of it is a bit tight on me now, luckily DD is the size I was then so fits into it all.

I have a vintage Max Mara camel skirt from the 70s, but that was bought fairly recently, so not sure if it counts?

I have underwear from M&S from the late 80s which is only now falling apart, but then I have knickers bought last year that are already disintegrating. Nothing lasts anymore!

GoldMoon · 09/03/2025 10:31

My summer dressing gown (St. Michaels aka M & S) is probably 30 years old .

Floisme · 09/03/2025 11:28

I wear a few things still from the 80s: some karate trousers that come out every summer, some Doc Martens (although they're now relegated to odd jobs as I got paint on them which won't come off) and a wool jumper that's still the warmest piece of knitwear I own.

From the 90s/early noughties, I have some velvet flares, Gap Long n' Lean jeans, some M&S flat lace up ankle boots and a long denim skirt. However I've not worn these constantly over 30 years - they were stored away until quite recently.

I also still wear some vintage 1930s-1960s things that I've had for over 30 years but I'm not sure if they count as they're old enough to be immune to trends.

But generally, yes I do think that everything dates, including the so-called classics, e.g. even on a 'timeless' white shirt the shape and the collar and the general fit will change. However some things/styles do come back regularly and when they do, you sometimes forget they've ever been away - and that would be my definition of timeless.

As for what you can do about it - I try and put clothes away now when I'm bored with them, provided they're in good condition and still fit. And I no longer buy something because I think it'll be an investment because I've learned the hard way that that's mostly marketing talk.

ClearHoldBuild · 09/03/2025 11:54

I’ve a grey/silver cardigan that I bought from top shop in about 1995 and I don’t wear it as I let my DD borrow it and she wears it all the time. Cheap as chips, still wearing well.

Madamblueshoes · 09/03/2025 12:30

Some great replies thanks everyone and an enjoyable trip down clothing memory lane... wham t shirts and all!! I agree with floisme above that things change oh so slightly second time around but I'm going to hang on to my so-called investment pieces from now on xx

M&S dressing gown 2011 still going strong. Necklace given me on my graduation 2010 and a red H&M hoody I keep at my mum's house from circa 2004. Other than that I didn't really keep any clothes from my younger years. It took me a while to find what I liked and anything I did like I wore to death at the time so it is sadly no more.

Mrscharlieeeee · 09/03/2025 17:25

Pearl Jam band tee circa 1993. It's very delicate now so I hand wash only. I also have a pair of docs from 1999 that I still wear and a Fendi baguette from 2001 and another from 2003 that are still firmly in my bag rotation.

MissyGirlie · 09/03/2025 17:47

A pure wool, fully lined black skirt from Next that I bought in 1985 - it comes out for the occasional funeral. I am currently too fat wide around the middle for it to fit comfortably.
A black and white kilt from Laura Ashley, c1990, also reliable funeral wear.

I also have a silk two-piece that my DM made for herself in about 1988. I haven't worn it in years, but if one of my DC ever announces a sudden marriage and parents to present themselves tomorrow, that will be out of the wardrobe and onto my body.
