Big birthday. Solid gold and with some coloured stones. I'd love some pointers and definitely some pictures of your gorgeous jewellery

I'd always go 18 carat over 9 as well if you can and the quality is so much better with one off older pieces

These are gorgeous. I found similar at Tomfoolery London but they were plated not solid. Anything solid gold these was out of price range.

Liberty have some lovely rings that I have been lusting after.

I love the Liberty rings but in my price range they tend to be gold plated which will have wear and tear too easily

You might like 'gypsy rings', OP. They are gold bands with precious stones in starburst settings, like this. Diamonds are the most common but you will also see rubies and sapphires. The term 'gypsy' refers to the style of the setting and means that the stone sits flush to the surface of the metal.

Editing to add that Elliebelle actually have quite a few at the moment. The emerald one is particularly unusual. Link.

Does anyone have experience of Topaz and whether it's good for a lot of wear?

Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so slightly harder than aquamarine or emerald (7.5-8) but less hard than ruby or sapphire (9) or diamond (10). The stone is pretty well-protected in a cluster setting like that.

How about a men’s ring? I wear this garnet of my Dh’s since it’s too small and he never wears it. The top is cabochon and the back is faceted.
