Straightening hair is now seen as being like your nanna getting a perm

So says my friend's gorgeous but no filter ASD daughter! I was there for dinner tonight, had a bath and washed my hair before I went. As I left I said I needed to get home to straighten my hair before bed. And then she came out with this! I mean, I'm not that bothered if it is because my hair is a mess if I don't straighten it tbf. But... is it?

I disagree. My DD in year 11 and all of her friends have straight hair. They might curl it for a special occasion for a change but it’s too much faff for school. One of her good friends has wavy hair and straightens it to within an inch of its life.

If you have frizzy/kinky hair like mine, then straighten it makes it look more sleek. Most people with my fine blow away thin hair would chose sleek over frizzy.

The blow dried bounce look is lovely but far too high maintenance for most teens day to day.

kaela100 · 25/02/2025 11:02

Smooth, straightened hair is still popular in wealthy circles. I imagine school girls / teens probably don't have time for the upkeep though.

Patagonia21 · 25/02/2025 11:02

There is no hope for me then. I have polka straight hair that will not hold a curl for 2 minutes!

Gettingbysomehow · 25/02/2025 11:02

I prefer a soft wave. I usually go to bed in foam rollers. I have long hair. I think poker straight hair looks a bit naff.

Unfortunately it is. The 90s were 30 years ago.

THE NINETIES WILL NEVER DIE

Speaking as a teenager of the 90s who had what were then desperately unfashionable corkscrew ringlets all the way through because that's just what my hair does

It's not THAT funny!

It definitely is 😂

This! My daughter does different make up looks in the evening (amazing looking full eye make up - flicked liner, lashes, intricately shaded lids) that she's planning to replicate in the morning for school. The closest she actually gets in the morning is sticking on some lashes! 😂

Bit strange to be "absolutely howling" about it. It really isn't that funny.

Same - I find them all over the house little black cluster eyelashes 🤣

The '90s were a rip off of the '70s. Who in turn ripped off the '30s.
We all start off thinking we're original.....

Hearing your teenager refer to anything pre-birth as 'the nineteen hundreds' (always said derisively!) is hard 😂 My daughter doesn't differentiate either between the 60's or the 90's - it's ALL equally ancient to her!

TheLongRider · 25/02/2025 11:14

Another good example is Kylie Minogue, she could never be accused of being in a style rut! She was queen of a bubble perm in her Neighbours days and has always kept abreast of different fashions and styles.

@HashtagBlessedHashtagGrateful I'm 52 I straighten mine don't care I can't do waves or i would

Cherrysoup · 25/02/2025 11:30

Your friend's dd is very rude. ASD does not equal rude.

In my school, approx 500 girls, they seem to still straighten hair, I made a comment to one girl yesterday about how I loved her straight hair and she said she has to straighten it daily. It is very much still the thing. Looking at my Year 11 form, at least half of the girls have poker straight hair via straighteners. Mine is spiral curls and gets straightened once a year if I can be bothered, but it takes ages.

Does your dd put them on every day? My dd puts them on under the eyelash and changes them weekly.

As for straight hair, my dd has only just started curling her hair all the time. She’s in year 12. This makes a lot of difference I think as they’re all of a sudden on count down to adulthood.

LilacPeer · 25/02/2025 11:40

I have 4 daughters from ages 10 - 21 and they all straighten their hair often. They are also happy to curl it. I'd say 50/50 really.

Floisme · 25/02/2025 11:41

I will never understand why Nicole Kidman spent all those years - decades even - straightening her hair.

Mine does. She's asking for proper lash extensions now, which I've dodged so far, but she's determined - so that'll be the next thing!

RaraRachael · 25/02/2025 11:44

Well there's no way I'm giving up my straighteners. My hair is just a frizzy mess so I couldn't go out in public without it being straightened. It's not poker straight because I just can't achieve that look with my hair and level of skill.

So, along with my skinny jeans, I'm happy to be unfashionable.

Yes, this is the hairdryer I use. It doesn’t take long. As for products, my hairdresser says osmo serum is really. We also use bedhead after party to moisturise and 3 Lisap ultime heat protector. All in wet hair. Then blow dry.

I’m not surprised she wants lash extensions if she’s doing it daily. Putting those cluster ones on takes ages. I’m hoping it’s a phase and she will go back to natural lashes at some stage.

Mine uses strips, though she does the cluster ones sometimes if shes doing a particular look. I agree about looking natural, I love seeing her wee face bare, but the lashes are addictive I think!

Pigeonqueen · 25/02/2025 11:57

My dd is 22 and her and all her friends straighten their hair to the point it’s so brittle it’s almost breaking off. 😳

Iloveshihtzus · 25/02/2025 12:13

Dandeliontea123 · 25/02/2025 10:56

Their hair isn't poker straight or centre parted though. There is volume and shaping.

They prove the point that if you don’t update your style since your teen years or 20’s that it ages you, no matter what age you are now. It’s a clear illustration that a more modern hairstyle takes years off them.
