Straightening hair is now seen as being like your nanna getting a perm

So says my friend's gorgeous but no filter ASD daughter! I was there for dinner tonight, had a bath and washed my hair before I went. As I left I said I needed to get home to straighten my hair before bed. And then she came out with this! I mean, I'm not that bothered if it is because my hair is a mess if I don't straighten it tbf. But... is it?

Why do pp keep talking about socks? What do you do to your hair with socks please? So confused...

Wasn’t the Dyson air strait one of the most lauded beauty launches last year?! There’s always a place for straight styles

I think it's seen as a bit "trashy" because it damages the hair. Tbf, they do, but then any number of other things people do to their hair nowadays does too. Remember Gemma Collins on big brother and her having a break down saying "only weirdos use straighteners" and her extensions were ruined. It's all about a blow dry now and/or naturally wavey hair.

This would not be true where I live, most of the girls at my children's primary and high school have poker straight hair as do most of the 20 something year olds do where I work.

I have niece's and nephews who live out of area and most of their cohort also have poker straight hair.

Perhaps it is gently going out of fashion but who cares as long as you are happy with it.

Araminta1003 · 25/02/2025 09:14

My teen has a wolf cut, wavy ish and has hair that does that naturally. It is like a soft mullet to my eyes!

riverislandjeans · 25/02/2025 09:14

Yeah straight round here too in the midlands seems fashionable still!

MJconfessions · 25/02/2025 09:15

I think it depends on what people actually mean by straight hair too. I would consider looks like this as straight hair - they just flicked the ends out.

Why do you think the younger generation get to decide what's "cool" and what's not for your generation? Surely it's better to do what's best for you, as an individual, rather than follow social media based trends. I mean for years contouring was popular and stupid big brows were a thing, particularly for younger people, and tbh both these trends looked utterly ridiculous. Just because they're younger than you doesn't mean they know everything about hair and beauty. In reality they just spend too much time on TikTok. Do what suits your hair, your face, your body. Surely that's common sense??

Can't read past page one, strong Mumsnet bingo. A sporty niece, a frightful sight in (gasp) The North, has anyone's 6ft rugby playing son got involved?

Mine - I just asked him and he said he still uses hair straighteners. He's currently home from his Russell group uni 😂

Left is wavy, right is straight (tho not dead straight).

Nowvoyager99 · 25/02/2025 09:22

It is a class thing too tbh.

Straightened hair looks old/low class these days.

It is hard to keep up isn’t it? I suggest we all style our hair as we please.

doublec · 25/02/2025 09:22

Interesting! I have naturally curly hair that I have straightened since my late teens. However, I lost all my hair during chemo and am now regrowing it. It's grown back just as curly as ever. Only this time, have decided that I might as well embrace my natural curls. I don't know whether it's because I'm older now and can't be bothered to spend the time straightening it, and one of the things cancer taught me is that time is precious. Or maybe it's just because I finally appreciate how lovely my natural hair is.

PheasantPluckers · 25/02/2025 09:24

Sounds much more fun than wrestling with straighteners every day.

Have you ever used straighteners before?! I don't think they require any wresting.

I sometimes run straighters over my hair quickly if I've only had time to rough dry my hair. It doesn't look 'straightenend' as such, just tames the frizz.

Shiny, straight hair always looks good to me.

Cloudberry24 · 25/02/2025 09:25

Whoever has decided this will need to wrestle my GHDs from me … or try, anyway.

Moveoverdarlin · 25/02/2025 09:25

Don’t think this is true. I have a 19 year old daughter. All of her friends have ridiculously long, straight hair. 3 of them asked for the cordless Dyson straightners for Christmas just gone.

CuteEasterBunny · 25/02/2025 09:28

Utter bollocks.

Gently, I think it's both age and class now. Definitely not a royal fan, but think Kate Middleton. Soft, elegant, expensive-looking hair. Not poker straight hair with see through white leggings and Uggs.

In the same way that I didn’t dress like Lady Di (as was) when I was younger- mainly because she dressed like a middle aged woman.

Crumpleton · 25/02/2025 09:30

I look a bit like Crystal Tips if I don't run the straighteners through my hair, and I'm mid 60's, but the minute any moisture gets on it it boofs up again, not even a nice wave or curl just looks a mess.

Benshawsberries · 25/02/2025 09:30

Could just be her opinion, I’ve 3 teenage girls and they all straighten their hair

twilightermummy · 25/02/2025 09:30

Christ, I'm almost 40 and this is devastating news to me!

The answer to your question is also common sense. Young people generally tend to be more attractive than older people. Youth is considered a beauty standard. That’s not a criticism; it’s simply the way the world is. It’s hardly a groundbreaking concept that younger generations have influence over fashion and beauty; it’s always been that way. The hair industry will undoubtedly be influenced by trends set by new generations.

For what it’s worth, many trends of the past, such as thin eyebrows from the 90s, also looked ridiculous. It’s your choice whether you embrace these trends, but it’s disingenuous to pretend that you don’t understand their origins.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/02/2025 09:34

17 & 19 year old family members, both wear poker straight hair with a centre parting and no fringe. If it's wavy it's because it's dried full of salt water rather than being deliberate.

DreamySloth · 25/02/2025 08:40

Even cartoons for kids nowadays would show an old lady with a perm. I think old white woman = late Queen

😄 Hooray for being old with a perm!
I’m old (71) and have always wanted curly hair so I’ve recently had a perm and I couldn’t be more delighted with my hair!
I reckoned that if I didn’t get curls now then I never would and I’ve had so many compliments 😊

I’m waiting for ye olde curtains to hit 😁

They’re back. My 16 yo dd mentioned curtains a month or so ago. As for the nana perm, it’s apparently a broccoli cut or something. Around here, it’s more gone to alpaca / llama wifh skin fade on the sides now. I prefer without the skin fade tbh.

As for anyone struggling with the curls, I dry with a hairdryer with brush on the end. That gives waves that with my hair curl up the next day. As for dd with long hair, she does similar with drying then sleeps in heatless curlers and puts a large curler at the front so that her chin length fringe has body rather than curl.

LateLessAbleToBeBothered · 25/02/2025 09:35

Ok forget all the jibes, this is really important 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙂

I have curly hair, frizzy, curly, which I straighten.

How can I easily get those lovely soft curls everyone is wearing…?

I just can’t do it.

😀😀😀😀😀😳
