Straightening hair is now seen as being like your nanna getting a perm

So says my friend's gorgeous but no filter ASD daughter! I was there for dinner tonight, had a bath and washed my hair before I went. As I left I said I needed to get home to straighten my hair before bed. And then she came out with this! I mean, I'm not that bothered if it is because my hair is a mess if I don't straighten it tbf. But... is it?

Absolutely loads of the young ones around here have long poker-straight hair. Often in a low ponytail and with a north face puffa jacket or white fox hoody. So I'm not sure I'd agree.

You've just described my 16 year old and her friends 😂

hereismydog · 25/02/2025 10:10

Well, I look like Hagrid if I don’t straighten my hair so I shall pay no heed to this ‘advice’ Grin

I have 2c waves but they don’t dry nicely. I could follow a long, complicated and expensive routine to wear my hair in its natural state but I haven’t the time, money or patience for that so a quick 5 minutes with my 20 year old pair of ghds is my go-to! Then it all goes up in a scruffy ponytail because I have a baby with grabby little hands.

In London North Face puffa + White Fox hoody is Roadman

BobbyBiscuits · 25/02/2025 10:13

I heard that perms among young lads were a thing?! Like only the top part of the hair and having a fade. So the nanna look is coming back maybe?

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 25/02/2025 10:23

I've noticed a lot of people with ASD seem to think that everyone does x or everyone does y, there's a lot of black and white thinking there so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Can't read past page one, strong Mumsnet bingo. A sporty niece, a frightful sight in (gasp) The North, has anyone's 6ft rugby playing son got involved?

What?

TheLongRider · 25/02/2025 10:25

I think it's just a comment on the fact that some people seem to get stuck in the same look as they had in their teens and twenties. So "Nanna perms" for older women who would have been teenagers in the late 50s, blue eyeshadow for the 70s and 80s, poker straight hair for the early 2000s, "2016" makeup style with heavy contour, eyebrows and concealer, skinny jeans over wide leg trousers.

Some people don't change their style at all over the years, they stick to the one time they looked good in their 20s. It's not necessarily "ageist" to talk about it. It's just a recognition of the fact that people get stuck in a style rut/comfortable place and don't see the need to change.

Prepares for flaming

Yes I think that sounds about right. If it softens the blow, I'm not even middle aged any more, but I think long, poker straight hair is one of the looks that defines your generation. And if you think it'll look a mess if you don't straighten it, well I'm afraid I have to break it to you that that confirms it.

Don't worry, my generation thought we were immune too.

In the '60s we all wanted Twiggy or the Shrimp hair, long and straight but there were no straighteners, some friends actually ironed their hair! It's like white knee high boots, wait long enough and all fashions come round again!

UnderHisEeyore · 25/02/2025 10:26

I've never liked GHD hair that is flat and looks like it's been greased down. I use the straighteners if I have a fringe or if I can't wave it with a brush. Volume and waves have always balance my face more than flat stuck to scalp hair.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 25/02/2025 10:31

DD1 and DD2 (19 and 16) still use straighteners from time to time. DD1's hair is almost waist length, very thick and a bit straighter than mine. Curly is the natural default for DD2 and she just washes it and leaves it mostly. Mine is wavy and if anything, I tend to use the Big Hair rather than a straightener as it gives it a lift.

Edited

I think that looks awful.

Really aging.

I agree. Though recently I find myself wearing the exact same things I wore in my 20s as that stuff is fashionable again.

I did that! With brown paper between hair and iron.

But it didn't work which is why I wouldn't say poker straight hair defines our generation - we might have wanted it but we couldn't have it.

My god what a lot of effort for not very much result. DD has beautiful naturally curly hair but spends most of her time trying to make it look different. I don't get why.

I think she looks bloody amazing. But hardly anyone has that kind of hair or would make that effort as it takes fucking ages.

I think her hair at the start of the video is so much nicer.

She knew about "nannas getting perms"? That predates me and I'm in my 30s. Seems an odd comparison for a young person to make.

Why?

My 13 yr old makes references like this!

SequoiaTree · 25/02/2025 10:49

I think the straightened hair that the girls on the Inbetweeners had looks dated now. That was 2008-2010.

Agreed on both fronts.

TheLongRider · 25/02/2025 10:52

Someone updated the Golden Girls cast with more modern hairstyles and this proves my point. Look at Bea Arthur with her Nanna perm Vs a more modern hair style.

Oh no! I have blonde hair and I straighten it 🙈 I never thought it looked old fashioned until now 😂

Their hair isn't poker straight or centre parted though. There is volume and shaping.

TheNuthatch · 25/02/2025 10:57

Both of my teen dds tell me the same op. Soft blow dry straight is fine, iron straight is a big no no. They never leave the house without at least having a big roller in their fringe bangs for a bit first.

SassK · 25/02/2025 10:58

My almost 15yo (very hair/make up obsessed!) straightens her hair, to the poker straight point (she got a cloud nine dryer and iron set for Christmas). She also does heatless curls sometimes. So I'd say your friend's daughter is very much wrong @HashtagBlessedHashtagGrateful.
My daughter is highlighted blonde with a money piece, she wants to go quite dark next appointment (I'm trying to talk her out of it, I love her blonde!).
