Straightening hair is now seen as being like your nanna getting a perm

So says my friend's gorgeous but no filter ASD daughter! I was there for dinner tonight, had a bath and washed my hair before I went. As I left I said I needed to get home to straighten my hair before bed. And then she came out with this! I mean, I'm not that bothered if it is because my hair is a mess if I don't straighten it tbf. But... is it?

My DD is 14, and plenty of friends straighten their hair. Not every day, but maybe a couple of times a week

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 25/02/2025 07:39

Do what suits you, OP.

Like my friend in her late 30s who has had a perm since her early 20s and looks fabulous.

Ah a NE town. Of course it was. 🙄

It's where I saw it. Not the most affluent area. Not sure what your point is there.

My point is your comments are rooted in snobbery. Thought that was quite clear but obviously not.

Gently, I think it's both age and class now. Definitely not a royal fan, but think Kate Middleton. Soft, elegant, expensive-looking hair. Not poker straight hair with see through white leggings and Uggs.

Holy dog what is expensive hair?

my hair is always poker straight because it’s poker straight

Babymamamama · 25/02/2025 07:37

It’s not true at all. I’m urban/central and around DD plus lots of DDs young affluent friends. Parents in fashion etc etc.... these girls all have the straight very long hair with central parting no fringe. It’s ubiquitous. They would consider that long Bob with fake waves at the front to be very “millennial” ie dated/old. Kind of newsreader style. When they are all getting ready for a night out believe me the straighteners are on.

It is a v Y2K style, so makes sense

MJconfessions · 25/02/2025 07:43

I’m young/in my 20s and people definitely still have straight hairstyles.

It’s more that I just blow dry my hair using my Dyson, which usually takes out the natural wave, as opposed to purposely straightening it.

Or if I curl my hair and the curls drop out, my hair looks straight as opposed to me purposely aiming for it to look that way.

Generally straight hair is normal but should look bouncy/voluminous/flicky as opposed to weighed down/flat/thin

Lowcarbonated · 25/02/2025 07:44

Yea according to my hair dresser curls are now a trend! As someone with very curly hair I was a bit surprised tbh. Hadn't really noticed.

Pumpkincozynights · 25/02/2025 07:45

Well the long hair with the soft wave made by curling irons has been doing the rounds for years where I am.
Dd straightens her hair and puts it in a pony tail as do most of her friends.
Do what suits you op.
I find it amusing that wearing North Face is now seen as on trend. Many years ago North Face was worn by hikers and BBC news reporters.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 25/02/2025 07:47

They can pry the GHD's out of my cold dead hands

SwanOfThoseThings · 25/02/2025 07:49

Nice piece of ageism from the DD there. I understand she lacks filters, but her underlying attitude is troubling.

Absolutely howling that any teen of any class would like kate Middleton hair 😂

queenMab99 · 25/02/2025 07:56

I think regularly doing anything harsh to your hair, lips, or skin, to fit in with fashion is a sign of something other than age or class.

XiCi · 25/02/2025 07:57

Lots of young girls still straighten their hair. I see a mix of soft waves and poker straight amongst dds friends. Just because you think your friends daughter is gorgeous doesn't mean she knows the first thing about fashion trends and tbh she sounds rude and insufferable

Agreed, and I’m a sartorially challenged 45+ year old 😜and starting any comment on mumsnet with “Gently….”🙄

Hwi · 25/02/2025 08:00

Shocking bad manners on the part of their daughter - dc should keep their gobs shut when allowed at a table with adults. They can voice their idiotic opinions when THEY host parties with their friends. Shocking parenting if they did not teach their daughter basic manners. As for this straightening business I don't know.

Doggymummar · 25/02/2025 08:01

I can only speak from experience but my straighteners went in the loft a couple of years ago and I sock curl now. That's the style that seems to be all over social media. I hate it when my hairdresser straightens it in the salon, straight home to wash it.

BeyondMyWits · 25/02/2025 08:01

Here the boys are having nana-perms! Local hairdresser has a gallery and there were 2 pics of mid teens having had perms. I worked in a pharmacy (next door to the hairdresser) where we sold a lot of "pin-up" perm kits to boys too.
The girls seemed to straighten and tie up for school, but go for full wavy for going out.

babbi · 25/02/2025 08:02

This is not good . I have only just learned after lots of angst to straighten my hair so that it doesn’t look a real mess .( and without burning myself on GHDs🤦‍♀️)
Now it seems I need to learn to put a soft curl in 😩
I am just too clumsy for this stuff.
Wish the 80s perms would come back .
Was so easy then ..,

Floisme · 25/02/2025 08:02

I don't think it's so much about understanding trends, it's just that some looks become forever associated with a particular generation or decade. It's like minis = 60s, not because everyone stopped wearing them in 1970 but because the 60s were their hay day.

gatheryerosebuds · 25/02/2025 08:03

Yes the vast majority of 14-18 year olds seem to have middle partings and straight hair ( along with the ubiquitous puffer North Face jacket as mentioned by a PP)
They all look identical!!

MorrisZapp · 25/02/2025 08:03

Never heard such pish in my life. Straight hair and nana perms are not remotely the same.

Violashifts · 25/02/2025 08:04

User12435687 · 25/02/2025 07:18

Absolutely loads of the young ones around here have long poker-straight hair. Often in a low ponytail and with a north face puffa jacket or white fox hoody. So I'm not sure I'd agree.

Same here. Loads of teens at my school brought straightners in for photograph day.

I also straightened my 16 year olds for a party.

Maybe we are behind the times where I live.

Bunny44 · 25/02/2025 08:05

My hair is naturally dead straight 🥲. If it was wavy I wouldn't straighten it though.
