Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:32

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

I posted it separately earlier in the thread but trust me I’m giggling at how pathetic it is to follow trends, not thinking it’s a good thing! X

copied other post below as no idea how to link it -

North west london / slightly outside of NW london suburbs -
eg Hampstead, Mill Hill, Radlett…

lululemon or adanola leggings.
oversized sweatshirt, aninne bing or adanola
sports socks eg thicker ankle length.
mini uggs, sambas specials or Chanel/ loewe trainers.

always a ‘designer’ bag not just high street - Chanel plus non-branded tote for ‘kid or baby’ stuff. Or loewe bag.

oh and a lot of baseball caps - always branded / designer. Typically Celine.

age group - I’m later 30s toddler mum, but would say this is consistently the look for 30 - 42 ish year olds.

god I need to change my wardrobe after writing this… can’t believe I’m a sheep in a pathetic tribe!!! 😳🤣

I'm guilty of a baseball cap in summer (sometimes, not branded, got it on Amazon, great quality for the price though so looks more expensive than it was)! I have to protect my skin, more conscious of that now. I also wear sports leggings sometimes, if they have pockets for my phone, I'm extra happy. Disclaimer: they don't have a padded bum, and I do a lot of walking and running about 😂
Trainers I couldn't care about as long as they are comfortable and look half decent, I don't pay ridiculous prices for them either, or really know the styles! I wear what I feel suits my body shape, if it happens to be "on trend" than great, if it is from over a decade ago, equally great! You know you're getting old when you start acquiring certain items of clothing older than some teenagers! 😂 I'm in my very late 30s.

Bloody hell, just looked at the price of Celine baseball caps! Wowsers. 🙈. No baseball cap is worth £500!

Sweet Jesus! Mine was around a tenner, and looks nicer😂

JustJazzy · 16/02/2025 14:58

Ireland
Leggings, 4th arq fleece(hate them!), nb 327, long puffer gilet.
I absolutely hate the look! The 4th arq fleece and the 327s give me the ick 🙈😂

Veja trainers aren't big here anymore, they were everywhere a few years ago.

Developedanillness · 16/02/2025 15:03

I'm sad, I love my Veja trainers. Where do they all go once they're deemed unfashionable though I wonder....

I wouldn't stop wearing something that random people say are unfashionable if you love them.
I still wear skinny jeans as I'm in my 40s and dgaf what others think once I'm happy and comfortable in what I'm wearing.

Plenty of us are still wearing them, never fear! 😁

I’m struggling to see any connection between Hampstead, Mill Hill and Radlett.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 16/02/2025 16:37

Thinking about some of the handbag comments upthread.. I very rarely see Gen Z women carrying handbags.. The students have backpacks and the young mums have baby bags, but otherwise it’s just phone and keys. I’d say I still use one on occasion, but it’s also quite liberating not to!

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 16/02/2025 16:49

I only do drop off once a week on my day off, but see plenty of "mums in the wild" obviously so there are some clear trends!
I'm in Scotland, city centre in a "recently gentrified" area ie very mixed. Most people walk to school as were in such an urban area so obviously you see a lot of practical shoes and coats.
Similar trends to what everyone else has said - lots of athleisure. Some designer, some probably more budget.
Lots of very current silhouettes like barrel or wide leg trousers with oversized wool coats or quilted jackets, DM style boots or trainers.

Some of the comments on here are so sneery it's horrible 😔 I mean sure some items of clothing might not be to my taste but I am capable of saying that without describing them as vile/depressing/looking like an overgrown toddler (not that I would, I love my L&Y dungarees!)

madamweb · 16/02/2025 17:30

I have to say I am quite oblivious to trends now, I just wear what I like.

I am usually working from home,.and then dash out do a dog walk at pick up so I wear ankle wellies (or Birkenstocks in summer), the first trousers I can see as I fling off my WFH pjs, and then my top half is "teams calls " ready with a blouse or jumper, nice earrings and some light make up. But if it's grim weather I will throw on a wax cotton jacket or a fleece.

I probably look ridiculous but I am there to pick up my daughter not for a fashion show

That’s funny though because I didn’t ‘accuse’ anyone of anything. How can you accuse someone of wearing something they were wearing? You do understand what accusing means? Obviously not. Next.

It's entertaining watching how cool the mums wearing said apparel believe they look.

Oh, you’re a little confused. You accused them of thinking they were cool. While obviously intimating that you’re the cool one. No worries, you can go onto whoever you were going to accuse ‘next!’ now 😀

wizzywig · 15/02/2025 15:07

2 looks depending on which side of the village you live in. Wealthier side: sleeveless puffa coat, Breton jumper, little dog that you are taking for a walk, coffee not in a Stanley cup,

Less wealthy side: Stanley cup, leggings with the white socks, hair tied up, eyebrows microbladed and lips filled. Or leggings you can see the knickers through, hoodie, top bun

Im the second but you can’t see through my leggings and no Stanley cup as I think they are overpriced

Bowies · 16/02/2025 17:47

Not really no, but don’t think ur clique are in a strong position to criticise the long white socks, OP at least that’s somewhat more interesting.

Lotsofsnacks · 16/02/2025 17:49

No uniform, every one looks fairly different at the drop offs/collections. There’s the office mums in corporate wear, tracksuit mums, jeans and hoodie mums, the slinky jersey Co-ord mums and a couple of rock chick mums etc

no here wears Vejas, it’s all Sambas and Spezials.

Though there are lots of the obligatory black puffer coats in winter, though they are v practical and warm TBF :) and a few fair mum buns, which again are easy and fast so no problem with that!

Missingpop · 16/02/2025 17:50

Heck no not that I ever noticed but my school drops & pick ups were always really quick I didn’t hang around as I always on my way to the office but mine was always a nice trouser suit with heels or skirt & jacket with tights & heels; quite a few mothers were also working professionally sessional so were dressed in the same attire.

Kellph83 · 16/02/2025 17:50

Pretty varied here in east London/Essex. You have the working mums in workwear-trousers/skirts etc then you have the Skechers mums, these are normally a little bit older and don’t care about fashion. Then there’s the mums that don’t work and live in leggings, new balance or uggs and socks. Or crocs and socks with everything! Even saw a lady with pj bottoms on the other day 🤣🫠

Frillysweetpea · 16/02/2025 17:53

somewhereinsuburbia · 15/02/2025 14:58

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Brighton?
Hebden Bridge?

Lotsofsnacks · 16/02/2025 17:54

Also, I think I’m a fairly stylish person but I’m often in a rush before drop off, so often grab the closest thing to throw on. So I’m not consciously putting a look together in the morning! I think a lot of looks described on here will be the same. It so easy to scrape back hair and throw on jeans, hoodie and a big puffer 🤪

Ricecakesaremyjam · 16/02/2025 17:54

Tends to be - leggings with thick white socks pulled up with either adidas samba’s, new balance trainers, or Ugg slip-on’s that look really uncomfortable and like you’d have to scrunch your toes up to keep them on, OR wide leg jeans and the aforementioned footwear. That’s the trendy ones anyway! The rest of us just wear….whatever really. Jeans and jumpers. Some people wear joggers. Some are in work wear. Some have clearly been dog walking and are in wellies. So while there are definite trends I’ve noticed, the only item I’ve seen literally every mum in every age group wearing is a long black or green padded puffa gilet

uniformity is depressing wherever you go. Ppl here wear lots of mismatched colours/patterns, big jewellery and trainers.

And not a mulberry bag in sight ….

SpangleSparkle · 16/02/2025 18:04

Yes they wear Vega Trainers, mini length float skirts with a baggy jumper, cross over body bag from Oliver Bonas and the same hair cut

fingerbobz · 16/02/2025 18:08

I go to the gym or yoga after school run so you will see me in leggings, hoody, long socks and a long coat
