Skinny jeans: in, then out, then in again?? Are they?

My Uni students reckon skinny jeans have come BACK in now. Is that right? Can I actually re-wear the skinnies I have languishing in the drawer? I'm so confused!

I walked through my local town centre today and felt like I was the only one in wide legged jeans. Skinnies are still very alive and well!

stillavid · 08/02/2025 18:15

I am wearing a black pair at the moment. Was watching my DD play sport today and stood in a muddy field - there was not a woman there who wasn't wearing skinnies tucked into some type of boots.

I also like barrel, wide, straight etc but in the mud or rain - skinnies in boots it is.

Personally I like to follow fashion but also take into account my figure and practicalities.

UpMyself · 08/02/2025 18:40

They never went away. Those ugly wide-legged monstrosities are not getting anywhere near me.

Berlinlover · 08/02/2025 18:45

I have to say I love the wide leg jeans but thanks to cancer I weigh under 8 stone otherwise they’d probably make me look massive. Where I live skinny jeans never went out of fashion.

Irvinesv · 08/02/2025 18:46

I’ve never stopped wearing them, I shop in new look, river island etc and they’ve kept selling them so that’s good enough for me.

Stealer · 08/02/2025 18:46

I never stopped wearing them. Nor did most people judging by the amount of people I see wearing them.

CountFucula · 08/02/2025 18:48

The people under 30 at work all wear black skinnies - I like barrel.

WilmaTitsDrop · 08/02/2025 18:50

Skinnies are a staple now, just like leggings.

They don't go in or out of fashion.

Doggymummar · 08/02/2025 18:52

I bought wide legged for my last three pairs but I still wear skinnies mostly at this time of year.

roselilylavender · 08/02/2025 19:06

Market town just outside the M25. Where I am, it's always been the case at a school gate, stood on the side lines at a sports match or practice or out for a coffee with friends or lunch that someone will be in skinnies & others in sports leggings. Add yucky February weather to the mix and loads of people are in them as they're just much more practical as you don't have to worry about flappy trouser ends getting wet and can shove them into a pair of boots.

UpMyself · 08/02/2025 19:10

Agree. This time of year, I wear boots, and skinnies (or straight leg with chelsea boots) look so much better with them.

henlake7 · 08/02/2025 19:43

Skinnies are too practical to ever go fully out of style, IMO it's what you wear them with that can make you look dated.

They aren't for me though, I have one pair I've worn once since I bought them! I don't even wear leggings really unless it's for exercise or under dresses.
All my trousers are wide legged in some way.

Printedword · 08/02/2025 19:44

They never really killed them off try as they might. They are definitely back big time

I think that's right now

PiastriThePastry · 08/02/2025 19:59

I don’t think they ever really properly went away, honestly. I’ve tried all sorts of different shaped jeans but can’t figure out why I look so shite in all of them… apart from skinnies 😅 I have one pair of light-wash not quite straight/not quite wide leg ripped jeans which are okayish… but that’s about all they are!
It doesn’t help that I’m currently 8 months pregnant, but still 🤣

Mary46 · 08/02/2025 20:08

Op I much prefer them to massive wide legged jeans in shops as they add more width to my hips!! We in dublin its all wide legged jeans in

Vitriolinsanity · 08/02/2025 20:22

I swear to God herself I will never ever give mine up.

My only concession is rolled up Hush boyfriends in warmer months.

You can fuck off with barrel legs that make one look like ones lower half is in fact in a barrel.

GettingOlderandBetter · 08/02/2025 20:31

I was so so happy to get rid of my skinnies and won’t be replacing them too quickly. I’ve bought at least 5 pairs of wide to enormously wide leg jeans now in various colours and love them, they are so comfortable. Only downside is on a wet muddy day you can’t stop them getting wet and muddy but it’s a worthwhile sacrifice

TheOGCCL · 08/02/2025 20:41

The new styles in for spring summer seem to be even wider than ever. Massive high waisted palazzo ones. With anything that extreme they will date. Skinnies, once they hit the mainstream, have never been out there or extreme, they are middle of the road, most people can make them work, no one really notices them. Add to that the fact they are just very practical especially in the UK winters, and they just aren't going to go anywhere. No longer in fashion but that's almost what will keep them going forever.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 09/02/2025 09:06

Perhaps... teen DD has just ordered a new pair after a few years of wide leg jeans and cargo trousers.

Unsurprisingly, she looks gorgeous in them.

Frowningprovidence · 09/02/2025 09:10

I like wide leg but skinies and wet weather go together.

BrassyPalm · 09/02/2025 09:14

I look best in skinny jeans and the style makes me feel great - I never stopped wearing them and I will continue to wear them even if I’m the only one in them.

I dislike the comment ‘wear what you feel comfortable in’ but tbh it definitely applies (for me) with skinny jeans. If you prefer skinnies then just go with them.

Kitchensinktoday · 09/02/2025 09:27

I expect to be wearing skinny/slim jeans til the day I die! Wide jeans don’t flatter many of us

Trainr · 09/02/2025 09:33

They are like leggings as previous posters have said. They’re not the height of fashion, but people wear them as they’re practical - same with leggings. I’ve seen a lot of people wear skinny jeans and leggings, not everyone follows fashion trends and many prefer to wear clothes that are comfortable and practical.

Sampler · 09/02/2025 09:35

I still have my skinnies but I’ve found a happy medium that suits me because I couldn’t find any wide leg jeans that looked flattering. Currently wearing Massimo Dutti mid rise -straight slim leg relaxed fit in cropped (that’s a mouthful).
